Atleast24 area workers had something 10 be thankful for as they were
called back to work at Meigs Mine 31 this week, halting nearly six
months of unemployment
About SO percent of the workers for this Wilkesville mine have aiow
returned to their jobs following the July 11 flood of aboul 800 millioo
gallons of water which stopped mining, Southern Ohio Coal Co. officials
announced Wednesday afternoon.
Only 64 of the 300 SOCCO employees are still unemployed since the
water flooded from an abandoned adjoining mine, the coal company's
spokeswoman BJ. Smith said.
SOCCO remains uncertain what caused the flood of water from the
other mine, Smith said in a previous interview .with The Daily Sentinel.
The company has been draining the water and repairing the mines
from rebuilding vents to replacing underground rail system and eleclrical
systems. Smith said.
The company recalled the most recent set of miDci1 beciUIC the
workers have moved into the Parker Run area - the lowest J8t of the
mine with the most water, said Jim T!>lllpkins, S.OCCO vice president
and_general manager.

·J.ayhawks, Minutemen clash fQr Nlf title
NEW YORK (AP) - John
· Calipari greeted his Massachusetts
Minutemen for practice about 12·
hours after lhe biggest victory in
school history and quickly lecrured
them on the real world.
The upset of No. I North Caroli·
na on Wednesday night was ancient
history by early Thursday afternoon, and Calipari had to bring tip
the next opponent, No. 6 Kansas
for the Preseason NIT tide tonight.
"We're double-digit underdogs
again," Calipari told the team. He
also had to tell the 19th-ranked
. Minutemen they would be without
6-foot-11 freshman center Marcus
Camby, who injured !lis right knee
early in the overtime against the
defending national champions and
is expected to be out at least two
.weeks.

. "They ·have so many guys and
Camby's loss hurts even more
because the Minutenien. will ~ they just kept coming in and beat·

may not be ·as tall and deep as lice. "I 'really lli9ught about gtving
North Carolina's, but it is as strong up, but I couldn't and I didn'L"
When Kansas beat No. 9 Minand experienced.
''The win over North Carolina nesota in the other semifinal,
showed we can play against guys almost everybody expected another
that size, and they were strong Kaniias-Nonh Carolina showdown,
too," said fol'Ward Lou Roe, who something .we have seen in two of
had 28 poinrs and 14 rebounds in the last thre!: NCAA Final Fours.
"A lot of people thought we had
leading the relentless Minutemen to
no
chance,
and we heard them all,''
a 54-52 rebound advantage. "We
have to put it behind us, though, Calipari said. "People told us to
and get ready to get it on Friday hang in there and try to keep it
close. ibis team bas an attitude of
night."
Roe won't have Camby to help refuse to lose."
Kansas took over irs game in the
him against Kansas as the heralded
freshm·an was to have an MRI · final minutes behind the play of
veterans ·Richard Scott, Steve

Woodberry and Greg Ostertag.

"A lot of'the young guys 911 t)lis
team look up to u s and we have to ·
set an example," said Scott,. who
finished with 20 pohus. "We'll
take that role, but it has to be
everybody ~o'ntribqting every
night, not JUSt two or tluee people.
Hey, it's just the third game ofthe
season and we're all still learning

IRVING, Texas (AP) - The
Dallas Cowboys had this one
wrapped up. All they had to do was
stand back and watch the football
as it spun like a top in the sleet and
snow.
But a sliding Leon LeU touched
the ball and gave Miami another
chance with three S«"'lds to play.
The Dolphins cashed in.
The wild ending began when
Pete Stoyanovich's 41-yard field
goal attempt was blocked by Jimmie Jones. Lett touched the ball
after it had P11ssed the line or
scrimmage and Miami's Jeff Dellenbach recovered 81 Jbe Dallas 1.
Stoyanovich nailed the winner
through the snowy mist from 19
yards out, giving the Dolphins a
wild 16-14 victory and the NFL
one of irs weirdest finishes ever.
Lett's lapse ranks among the
biggest gaffes in the history of professional football, among them his
own Super Bowl blunder in January when his hotdog play allowed
Buffalo's Don Beebe to catch him
. from behind and stop a sure touchdown.
Most of the Cowboys were
yelling for everybody to stay away
from the ball when Lett came
charging after iL
"I've been around a lot of footblj]l games but I've never seen one
end like that before," said Dol·

After both semifinal games all
coaches s1ressed the time of year
because this is still late November
and conference games do~'t start in

"We know it's November and
we all know that 'when March

happens they 'II send us out West to·

Mountaineers eye perfect year
this afternoon
.
By Tbe Associated Press
By the end of the day, Florida
State should know ·exactly what it
needs to do in order to stay No. I.
The Seminoles have the unique
advantage this weekend of playing
one day after the two undefeated
teams pursuing them in the college
football polls. No. 2 Nebraska
played No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 5
West Virginia played No. 11
Boston CoUege this afternoon. ·
Florida State plays Saturday
afternoon at No. 7 Florida.
If Nebraska wins by 21 ~XJinrs,
Florida State will know that 11, too,
needs to win by a big margin. If
Nebraska loses and West Virginia

wins, the Seminoles can probably
hang onto the No. I ranking with a
victory ~ whether it's by I point
or 50.
If Nebraska and West Virginia
both post shutouts, the Seminoles
may need to blank the Gators (9-1)
as wen.
·
A convincing victory by the
Comhuskers (10-0), combined with
a less-than-spectacular victory by
Florida State, could elev8le Nebras·
ka to No. I in the AP poll. But a
lackluster performance or a !-point
victory could actually cost them
their No. 2 ranking.
The Mountaineers (1().0) could
vault past No. 3 Auburn and No. 4

Perry feels victory a must for Browns Sunday

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Defensive lineman Michael Dean Perry
sees Sunday's matchup with
Atlanta as a must-win game for the
Cleveland Browns.
The Browns (5·5) have lost
three sll'8ight and five of seven and
are one game behind first-place
Pittsburgh and Houston in the AFC
Central. Pittsburgh and Houston
have 6-4 records. Atlanta is 4-6.
Perry says while the team has
improved, the defense has to stan
doing a better job. The Browns'
defense ranks 17th in the league

after 10 games. It ranked sixth in
the league after six games.
"We have to get a win in
Adanta," Perry said. "We're ().3
in November, and I've always said
if you don't win in November and
December, you're not going to

When playing bridge, you think
about bids and plays. But sometimes
you must also enter tbe mind of an oppolleDt and ask yourself wbat be is
thlliking. That is true on'today's deal,
taken from the latest issue of the
French magazine Bridge Plus.
To test yohrself, look only at tbe
North and East bands. Against
spades, your partner leads the
l. &evlm: queen, ace, four. Plan
defense.
As the editor, Gilles Queran, says,
your three-heart bid bas a lot to commend it opposite a passed partner. It
doesn't hurt to mix up your pre-empts
because the opponents will find it
more difficult to read tbe cards.
You can see three potential defensive tricks. But if South has his threespade bid, your partner must be look·
at a Yarborough. Therefore, you
assume partner has led a singleton. Was your plan to return· the heart
jack at trick two. asking partner to
switch_to a diamond after (hopefully)
rufling? Tb,en, knowing partner start·
ed with only one spade, did you ezit
with a minor?
