The Mason County Health Department reported an additional death on Tuesday — a male in the 60-69 year age range. This makes 14 total deaths in the county due to COVID19. The health department also reported 12 new cases. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday in Gallia County, making 1,494 total cases since March. The Meigs County Health Department reported eight new of COVID-19 on Tuesday. There are currently 83 active cases in the county. Local Schools Eastern Local Schools Supt. Steve Ohlinger notiﬁed families and staff that “one student or staff member involving an athletic program at Eastern High School has tested positive for COVID19. For the safety of the student-athletes and staff, all activities involving this particular athletic program have been suspended for the remainder of the month of December.” The release, which was posted on the district’s Facebook page, stated the district has been in direct communication with the county health department. Here’s a closer look at coronavirus cases across our area: Gallia County ODH and the Gallia County Health Department reported a total of 1,494 total cases of COVID-19 (since March) in Gallia County as part of Tuesday’s updates. This is an increase of 25 since Monday. ODH reported a total of 19 deaths, 93 hospitalizations (two new) and 975 presumed recovered individuals (35 new) as of Tuesday. Age ranges for the 1,494 total cases reported by ODH on Tuesday are as follows: 0-19 — 205 cases (2 new cases, 1 hospitalization) 20-29 — 254 cases (4 new cases, 1 new hospitalization, 5 total hospitalizations) 30-39 — 191 cases (2 new cases, 3 hospitalizations) 40-49 — 219 cases (2 new cases, 3 hospitalizations) 50-59 — 212 cases (6 new cases, 8 total hospitalizations) 60-69 — 185 cases (6 new cases 20 total hospitalizations, 3 total deaths) 70-79 — 124 cases (1 new case, 25 hospitalizations, 8 deaths) 80-plus — 102 cases (2 new cases, 1 new hospitalization, 28 total hospitalizations, 8 deaths) Gallia County is currently “Orange” on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System map after meeting three of the seven indicators on Thursday. See SANTA | 10 COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will offer virtual hikes in lieu of the traditional in-person guided tours held in January and February of each year. The naturalistled, online series will give Ohioans an opportunity to plan their own winter hikes while maintaining a safe social distance. “ODNR is committed to ensuring that everyone can safely get outdoors, enjoy their annual winter hikes, and get ﬁt naturally to start the new year,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “Just because we can’t all hike together doesn’t mean Ohioans will have to miss out on some of the prettiest winter views across the state.” Throughout the winter months, virtual hikes of state park trails, including well-known favorites and less-traveled options, will be presented on Facebook and the ODNR website by knowledgeable guides. Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, ODNR will offer a variety of tools and online resources so hikers can safely plan a self-guided outing. In addition to an overview of the trails, hikers can expect a review of safety tips for hiking in the cold and wintry weather. The Eastern girls basketball team led Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Southern 10-7 eight minutes into Monday’s contest in Meigs County, where the Lady Eagles ultimately won 61-12. Eastern (2-6, 1-3 TVC Hocking) never trailed in the contest, scoring eight straight to start play. Southern (0-3, 0-3) ended the ﬁrst period with a 7-to-2 run, but went 0-for-14 from the ﬁeld in the next two quarters. The Purple and Gold were within two points after a free throw 1:07 into the second quarter, but the Lady Eagles scored 24 of the next 25 points and headed into the half with a 34-9 lead. A 21-to-1 third period made the EHS advantage 55-10 to start the ﬁnale, and the Lady Eagles capped off the 61-12 run with a 7-to-2 quarter. The Baltimore Ravens also had seven players chosen. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes joins Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Houston’s Deshaun Watson as the AFC quarterbacks. The River Valley girls basketball team shot 48 percent from the ﬁeld and led wire-to-wire on Monday night during a 75-54 victory over host Meigs in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division matchup at Larry R. Morrison Gymnasium. The visiting Lady Raiders (4-2, 2-0 TVC Ohio) held the Lady Marauders (3-3, 2-3) without a ﬁeld goal for almost seven minutes in the opening frame while building an 18-8 ﬁrst quarter advantage. RVHS — which went 7-of-19 from the ﬁeld in the initial period — netted 18 of its ﬁnal 33 shot attempts and ultimately sank 6-of-10 trifecta tries through three frames while building a sizable 60-43 cushion headed into the ﬁnale. MHS traded 20 points apiece in the second frame for 38-28 halftime deﬁcit and made a 7-2 charge out of halftime to close to within 40-35 with 5:22 left in the third canto, but the Maroon and Gold were ultimately never closer the rest of the way.
