COLUMBUS, Ohio — The
Ohio Department of Natural
Resources (ODNR) will offer
virtual hikes in lieu of the traditional in-person guided tours
held in January and February
of each year. The naturalistled, online series will give
Ohioans an opportunity to
plan their own winter hikes
while maintaining a safe social
distance.
“ODNR is committed to
ensuring that everyone can
safely get outdoors, enjoy their
annual winter hikes, and get fit
naturally to start the new year,”
ODNR Director Mary Mertz
said. “Just because we can’t
all hike together doesn’t mean
Ohioans will have to miss out
on some of the prettiest winter
views across the state.”
Throughout the winter
months, virtual hikes of

state park trails, including
well-known favorites and
less-traveled options, will be
presented on Facebook and
the ODNR website by knowledgeable guides. Beginning
Jan. 1, 2021, ODNR will offer
a variety of tools and online
resources so hikers can safely
plan a self-guided outing. In
addition to an overview of
the trails, hikers can expect a
review of safety tips for hiking
in the cold and wintry weather.
The do’s and don’ts of outdoor
recreation in cold weather can
also be found here.
ODNR will be releasing a
limited-edition 2021 Ohio
Winter Hike patch so hikers
can commemorate their participation in the virtual hike
program. The patch will be
available for sale by February
at reserveohio.com.

The fate of the tainted legislation looming over the Ohio Statehouse since July remains unknown
as the Legislature convenes Tuesday for a final day of sessions.
For months, Lawmakers have
been unable to find common
ground on how to address the $1
billion nuclear bailout law at the
center of a $60 million bribery
probe.
The inaction by the House and
Senate forced the hand of Franklin
County Judge Chris Brown, who
granted a preliminary injunction
Monday that blocked the subsidies
from the law that were set to be
added to every electric bill in the

state starting Jan. 1.
“Frankly, the work of the 133rd
General Assembly is quickly coming to an end,” the judge said
during a hearing Monday. “As of
today, as of this moment, there has
been no movement of any legislation, and the court feels that putting the ball in the General Assembly’s court would be an abdication
of my responsibility to decide
these issues.”
Attorney General Dave Yost filed
the state’s lawsuit in September
against Energy Harbor, a former
subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.,
the state’s largest utility.
“Today’s ruling proves that the
powerful can be held accountable
and that corruption will be rooted
out,” Yost, a Republican, said in

a statement Monday. “Everybody
who pays an electric bill whether
for their own home or a jobsustaining manufacturer is the
winner today. Your pocket will not
be picked.”
The FBI, U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission and Ohio
Secretary of State are investigating
FirstEnergy’s role in the alleged
bribery scheme. Federal prosecutors allege then-Ohio House
Speaker Larry Householder used
the money to win the speakership,
elect political allies and pass the
bailout bill. Householder and four
others were arrested in July and
subsequently indicted on racketeering charges.

national park and presaid Dave Arnold.
“There are many people serve nearly six decades

ago. He cited the Jan.
29, 1963, House Concurrent Resolution No. 9,
entitled “Encouraging
the speedy development
of the New River Gorge
Area into a national
playground by the federal and state governments and the citizens
of West Virginia,” which
was under consideration
by the House Committee
on Forestry and Conservation of the W.Va.
House of Delegates.
Initial success came
to the New River Gorge
region in 1978 when
the federal government
designated the New
River as a “national
river.” Arnold said the
grassroots leadership
of the New River Gorge
Regional Development
Authority and its four
counties – Fayette,
Nicholas, Raleigh, and
Summers counties, plus
that of nearby Mercer
County – was instrumental in building local,
state and federal support
for the national park and

investigators say was
passed through the largest bribery scheme in
state history.
“House Bill 798 is
actually worse than
House Bill 6 because
voting for it would mean
the corruption is staring
you straight in the face,”
Rep. David Leland,
a ranking Democrat,
said Tuesday. “At least
the first time, people
can say, ‘Well, I didn’t
know about the criminal
conduct. I didn’t know
about this when I voted
for it.’ But they know all
about that now.”

The preliminary injunction came as lawmakers
enter a final day of committee hearings and sessions before adjourning
for the holidays.
But both Democrats
and Republicans believe
there is not enough support for any bill to pass
Tuesday that would remedy, delay or repeal portions of the legislation.

the NPS system, there
are only six combination national parks and
preserves, all in Alaska.
There is one national
monument and preserve — Oregon Caves
National Monument and
Preserve, in Southern
Oregon.
The New River Gorge
National Park and
Preserve Designation
Act would designate
between 5,000 and
6,000 acres of the
72,808-acre tract of federal land as a national
park component.
Arnold emphasized
the importance of hunting being permitted

in new public areas of
the “preserve” property, offering another
important benefit to
West Virginians and
others interested in
visiting the New River
Gorge region, as well as
businesses catering to
consumers seeking additional hunting venues.
The national park
component also would
include a portion of the
lower Gorge, extending northward from
Keeneys Creek, past
the New River Gorge
Bridge and Canyon Rim
Visitor Center to the
park’s northern boundary, adjacent to Hawks
Nest State Park.

Lady Eagles soar past Southern, 61-12
By Alex Hawley
ahawley@aimmediamidwest.com

RACINE, Ohio — It
was close for a quarter.
The Eastern girls basketball team led Tri-Valley Conference Hocking
Division host Southern
10-7 eight minutes into
Monday’s contest in
Meigs County, where the
Lady Eagles ultimately
won 61-12.
Eastern (2-6, 1-3 TVC
Hocking) never trailed
in the contest, scoring
eight straight to start
play. Southern (0-3, 0-3)
ended the first period
with a 7-to-2 run, but
went 0-for-14 from the
field in the next two
quarters.
The Purple and Gold

were within two points
after a free throw 1:07
into the second quarter,
but the Lady Eagles
scored 24 of the next 25
points and headed into
the half with a 34-9 lead.
A 21-to-1 third period
made the EHS advantage 55-10 to start the
finale, and the Lady
Eagles capped off the
61-12 run with a 7-to-2
quarter.
Eastern won the
rebounding battle by a
45-to-26 clip, including
22-to-8 on the offensive
end. EHS committed
17 turnovers, while the
Lady Tornadoes gave the
ball away 35 times. The
Lady Eagles combined

Packers, Seahawks,
Ravens, Chiefs each
have 7 Pro Bowlers
NEW YORK (AP) — Led by their star quarterbacks, the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs
and Green Bay Packers each had seven players
selected to the Pro Bowl.
The Baltimore Ravens also had seven players
chosen.
Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes joins Buffalo’s
Josh Allen and Houston’s Deshaun Watson as the
AFC quarterbacks. For the NFC, it’s Green Bay’s
Aaron Rodgers, Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Arizona’s Kyler Murray.
Mahomes and Rodgers are the starters, though
there will be no actual game this season because of
the COVID-19 pandemic. On Jan. 31, the players
will be celebrated during two Pro Bowl-themed
shows airing on an ESPN/ABC simulcast, with a
virtual Pro Bowl experience within the Madden
NFL 21 video game.
Roster selections were determined by votes of
players, coaches and fans.
The other Chiefs are DE Frank Clark, OT Eric
Fisher, WR Tyreek Hill, DT Chris Jones, TE Travis Kelce and SS Tyrann Mathieu.
Baltimore has OT Orlando Brown, DT Calais
Campbell, LS Morgan Cox, CB Marlon Humphrey,
LB Matthew Judon, FB Patrick Ricard and K Justin Tucker.
“After everything that this year has been like,
it’s a real blessing to be back in this position again.
To still be playing football — and at a high level
— and to be voted in by my peers and coaches, it
really means a lot. This is an honor I really appreciate as a player,” Brown said.
For Green Bay, the other six representatives
are WR Davante Adams, CB Jaire Alexander, OT
David Bakhtiari, G Elgton Jenkins, RB Aaron
Jones and LB Za’Darius Smith.
Seattle has SS Jamal Adams, special teamer
Nick Bellore, FS Quandre Diggs, WR DK Metcalf,
LS Tyler Ott and LB Bobby Wagner.
Other notable selections include Titans running
back Derrick Henry, the NFL’s leading rusher,
and highly productive receivers Keenan Allen of
the Chargers and Stefon Diggs of the Bills for the
AFC’s offense. On defense, linebackers T.J. Watt
of Pittsburgh and Darius Leonard of Indianapolis,
Miami ball-hawking cornerback Xavien Howard
and Cleveland end Myles Garrett made the squad.
Broncos outside linebacker Bradley Chubb cried
during a Zoom call after being selected as a Pro
Bowl starter as he reflected on his journey back
from a torn ACL that sidelined him for most of
2019.
“Just to get the accolade is huge,” Chubb said.
“I’m sorry for getting emotional, I just went
through a lot this year. But this sure feels good.”
Chubb ranks fourth in the NFL with 7½ sacks
and has 19 QB hits, nine tackles for loss and a
forced fumble after missing 12 games last year and
tweaking his surgically repaired knee during a stadium scrimmage last summer.
For the NFC, such standouts as Arizona wideout DeAndre Hopkins, Minnesota running back
Dalvin Cook, New Orleans RB Alvin Kamara and
Philadelphia center Jason Kelce made it. So did
New Orleans DE Cameron Jordan, Los Angeles
Rams DT Aaron Donald, San Francisco LB Fred
Warner, Rams CB Jalen Ramsey and Arizona SS
Budda Baker.

Lady Raiders roll past Meigs, 75-54
By Bryan Walters
bwalters@aimmediamidwest.com

ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio
— The Lady Raiders
were feeling the warmth
as winter officially
began.
The River Valley girls
basketball team shot 48
percent from the field
and led wire-to-wire on
Monday night during a
75-54 victory over host
Meigs in a Tri-Valley
Conference Ohio Division matchup at Larry R.
Morrison Gymnasium.
The visiting Lady
Raiders (4-2, 2-0 TVC
Ohio) held the Lady
Marauders (3-3, 2-3)
without a field goal for
almost seven minutes in
the opening frame while
building an 18-8 first
quarter advantage.
RVHS — which went
7-of-19 from the field in
the initial period — netted 18 of its final 33 shot
attempts and ultimately
sank 6-of-10 trifecta tries
through three frames
while building a sizable
60-43 cushion headed
into the finale.
MHS traded 20 points
apiece in the second
frame for 38-28 halftime
deficit and made a 7-2
charge out of halftime

The Silver and Black

with a 20-8 surge to take
a 17-point lead into the
finale.
Meigs shot just 3-of-19
from the field down the
stretch run, including
0-for-6 from behind the
arc, and never came closer than 66-52 with 4:03
left in regulation. The
21-point final outcome
was also the largest lead
of the night for River
Valley.
The Lady Marauders
missed their first 11
field goal attempts and
committed six turnovers
before Delana Wright
produced a successful
basket with 1:11 left in
the opener, making it a
15-5 contest. Both teams
traded three points
apiece the rest of the
way, giving the guests a
double-digit advantage
through eight minutes
of play.
Brooklin Clonch hit a
trifecta 22 seconds into
the second frame, allowing RVHS to take its

The Lady Marauders, however, countered
with a 14-7 run over the
next four minutes as
Mara Hall sank two free
throws with 2:42 left in
the half, cutting the deficit down to 28-22.
The Lady Raiders
countered with 10 of the
final 16 points in the half
and took a 38-28 edge
into the intermission.
Meigs twice pulled to
within six in the opening
two minutes of the third,
then Mallory Hawley
sank a free throw at the
5:22 mark to close the
gap down to 40-35. Hawley hit a basket again at
the 3:34 mark to whittle
things down to 45-39,
but the hosts were never
closer.
River Valley went on
a 15-4 surge over the
final 3:20, with Lauren
Twyman and Hannah
Jacks providing all 15
of those points as the
guests extended the lead
out to 60-43 headed into
the finale.
Meigs outrebounded
RVHS by a sizable 46-31

overall margin, including
a 26-8 edge on the offensive glass. The hosts also
committed 24 of the 43
turnovers in the contest,
with 15 of those coming
in the first half.
The Lady Raiders netted 25-of-52 field goal
attempts overall and
also went 6-of-10 from
behind the arc. The
guests were 19-of-28 at
the free throw line for 68
percent.
Jacks led River Valley with a game-high
30 points, followed by
Twyman with 20 points
and Emma Truance with
five markers.
Morrisa Barcus, Zoe
Milliron and Sierra
Somerville were next
with four points each,
while Clonch and Madison Hall contributed
three points apiece. Allie
Holley completed the
winning tally with two
markers.
Jacks led the guests
with seven rebounds,
while Milliron hauled in
six caroms.
The Lady Marauders sank 18-of-67 shot

attempts for 27 percent,
including a 2-of-14 effort
from 3-point territory for
14 percent. The hosts
were also 16-of-25 from

But life expectancy for
2020 could end up dropping as much as three
full years, said Robert
Anderson of the Centers

for Disease Control and
Prevention.
The CDC counted
2,854,838 U.S. deaths
last year, or nearly 16,000
more than 2018. That’s

fairly good news: Deaths
usually rise by about
20,000 to 50,000 each
year, mainly due to the
nation’s aging, and growing, population.
Indeed, the age-adjusted death rate dropped
about 1% in 2019, and life
expectancy rose by about
six weeks to 78.8 years,
the CDC reported.
“It was actually a pretty
good year for mortality,
as things go,” said Anderson, who oversees CDC
death statistics.
The U.S. coronavirus
epidemic has been a big
driver of deaths this year,
both directly and indirectly.
The virus was first
identified in China last
year, and the first U.S.
cases were reported this
year. But it has become
the third leading cause of
death, behind only heart

disease and cancer. For
certain periods this year,
COVID-19 was the No. 1
killer.
But some other types
of deaths also have
increased.
A burst of pneumonia
cases early this year
may have been COVID19 deaths that simply
weren’t recognized as
such early in the epidemic. But there also
have been an unexpected
number of deaths from
certain types of heart
and circulatory diseases,
diabetes and dementia,
Anderson said.
Many of those, too,
may be related to COVID.
The virus could have
weakened patients
already struggling with
those conditions, or could
have diminished the care
they were getting, he
said.

out in particular frontline workers, scientists,
researchers, clinical trial

members during the holiday season.
“Our hearts are always
with you — keep the
faith,” said Biden, even as
he warned that the nation
faces a “dark winter”
as COVID-19 cases rise
across the country. More
than 320,000 people have
died from the virus in the
United States.
He urged Americans to
continue to take precautions, particularly during
the holidays when many
typically come together
with family and friends.
Noting the ways that the
pandemic has altered his
own holiday celebrations,
which typically include
up to two dozen relatives, Biden said “not this
year.”
On Monday, Biden was
vaccinated on live television as part of an effort to
reassure people that the
COVID-19 vaccine is safe.
“I look forward to the
second shot, and I have
absolute confidence in
the vaccine,” Biden said.
“But we’re in short supply.”
