Despite Tuesday's rain
parades. river races, games.
musical entertainment and fire·
works went on as scheduled
throughout Meigs County.
The rain started early in the
morning in Racine and contlnuC'd
off and on throughout the day.
Parade officials considered post·
ponlng the annual parade until
later in the day, but showC'r ~
began to taper off around 9 a.m .
and finally stopped just befon•,
parade time at 10 a.m. Because
of the showers from the night ,
before, the parade assembled on
the parking lot at Southern High
School Instead of in the yard at
Southern Junior High.
Rain held off in Rutland until
the afternoon. Even though the
weather seemed like it wasn't
going to cooperate at time~. the
Rutland parade. also siarting at
10 a.m., was a big success with
several different awards being
presented to the various parade
entries.
The weather was even less
cooperative for the fourth annual
Middleport parade with rain
keeping most parade entries
away. Biit even with' the bleak
weather. folks still gathered to
see the event. ·
Ox Roast Success
The annual ox roast and
entertainment continued all day
long at Rutland Park. As usual. a
big , crowd was on hand for
Rutland's holiday activities and
according to Lillie Kennedy.
organizer for the day-long cele·
bration. "it sprinkled all after·
noon" but the drizzle didn't affect
the gathering.
Immediately following Ra·
cine's . parade . barbequed
chicken. homemade ice cream
and other refreshments went on
sale at the ·fire house and sold out
within a few hours. Other activl·
ties also took place at the fire
house as scheduled.
Although showers and mists
were intermittent throughout the
afternoon in Rac.lne. carnival
. goers turned out for the amuse·
ment rides that were offered, as
well as for the "Anything that
Floats but a Boat" race which
had 10 entries and promises to
become an annual event in
Racine's July Fourth
celebration.
Drizzle continued into the
evening but a good crowd turned
out anyway at Racine's Star Mill
Park for musical entertainment
and fireworks. People stayed
under umbrellas and crowded
under the shelterhouse to enjoy
the last of the day's events.
Racine Village Councilman

Robert Beegle anti'cipaies that
by next year. Star Mill Park will

Although rain was hP<J,VY at ·

dispersC'd to thP Da ve Diles Park
for a $4,800 fireworks display .
Traffic . for the fireworks was
·'bumper to bumper.· ' according ·
to Middleport Village Council·
man Bob Gilmow.
.
Fireworks also e nded the da y
in Rutland with lots of people on
hand for the display .
Just like Middlepqrt. Pomeroy
also received heavy evening
riJin. But the Phil Dirt and the
Dozers concert took place as
scheduled on lhe Meigs Football
Field and a !though the music was
stopped temporarily during the ·

of several hundred people
stayed. When the rairt slacked
enough that the band's equip·

"hangin' in there."
.
So all in all. even though it was
a wet Fourth of July, area
celebrations were still a s uccess.

Dear Reaclers: I spoke at a

All the chlldren, hers and mine,
are grown and on their own.
We all get along fa:trly well, but
one of my ,stepdaughters Is a bit
of a thorn In my side. ''Sallie"
comes over her e almost every
day. She . goes straight to the
fridge and practically cleans us
out. Recently she mooched 15
straight meals, . I mean breakfast, lunch and dinner. The girl
can really make ·a pig of herself.
In all tl!e years that we have
been married, Sallie has had us
to dinner once, a hamburger
cookout In the back yard. · Her
husband did the broUing.
Isn't It terrible !or a grown
woman. to take a,dvantage of her
mother like this? It's ,the only
thing my wife and I argue about.
Please express your views, Ann.
I could use some help. - San
Antonio, Tex.
Dear San Aa .: I agree. It Is
terrible, but.thls Is one argument

worth rubilng your marriage.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPil The Ohio Supreme Court ruled
Wednesday that a defendant in a
civil trial Is subject only to one
JI.Unitlve damage citation in a
given case.
At the same time. the high
court found, that only limited
damages can be awarded In
wrongful pregnancy cases. and
they must be related directly to
the pregnancy .
.
- Digital and Analog Design
Corp. had sought awardsr of $1
million each on four alleged torts
by Its supplier. North Supply Co.
or Lorain County . .
North seized more than
$1oj:OO(J worth of merchandise
from Digital's Amherst warehous~ In 1984 because the firm
owed It $330.000.
The high court affirmed a $1.1
million co'l!pens_atory damage
award , but ruled North could be
punished only once for the same
act.
"We believe It is a reasonable
conclusion that out of a sense of
fairneSs , in an action seeking
punitlve1lamages. the law should
not countenance one to be pun- ·
Ished repeatedly for the same act
or allow multiple recoveries lor
such act," wrote Justice Robert
Holmes.
The court reduced the punitive
damage award from $1.5 milUon
to $1 million. Digital had sought

$2 million.
The wrongful pregnancy .case
was a six-year old lawsuit
against University Hospitals of
Cleveland and three physicians
there.
Wrongful pregnancy means a .
birth due to a physician's failure
to properly perform a sterilization pl'ocedure.
Ruth Johnson. then the mcth er
of three. had undergone a tubal
ligation in March 1982, but later
became pregnant. and delive red
a baby on April27. 1983. She was
awarded $12,!\00 for delivery
fees, prenatal care. pain and
suffering and loss of consortium
during pregnancy. but she sought
$300,000 for child rearing
·expenses .
Writing for the mai<?fiiY of the
court. Justice Andrew. Douglas
held that such expenses would be
specula tive "because of the
impossibility or a jury placing a
price tag on a child 's benefit to
·her . parents. We are not In the
business of placing a val.uc on a
smile or quantifying the negative
impact of a temper tantrum." he
wrote.
The court a lso ruled that in a
wrongful pregnancy, the moth er
need not have an a bortion or
placement for Hdoption in order
to make a justifiable c la im for
