As a week · lon~ heat wave continued to grip
Ohio. medical . expert s advised the state' s
res ident s, particularly elde rly people, t.o curt ail
outdoor ac tivitt~s and avoid excessive ex~rtio n .
"The most importa nt thing !S to s tay out of. th e
direct hea t and avoid overexertion ." said Dr.
Clark Ros e nberry, a n emeri!E'ncy room phy sician
at Warren General Hospllal.
He said overexposure to the heat can cau se

problems ranging from fainting to heat stroke. ]ie
said he had handled only a few heat-related cases
+his week, primarily older patients suffering from
dehydration.
Temperatures climbed Into the 90s across the
sta te Wednesday for the third straight day, and
forecasters said the hot , humid weather was
expected to continue until at leas t the weekend.
Dr. Wllltam Rutherford, critical care specialist
a t University Hospitals in Cleveland. said the hea t
a ffects mostly older patients who are taking some
type of medlcat ion.
He said anyone experiencing weakness, thirst ,
excessive sweating , confusion , irrational behavior and na usea could be suffering from heat
exhaustion.
Rutherford said' people with those symptoms
s hould take action to cool themselves.
"Get out of the heat and into a coot e nvi ronment,
particularly with kee ping the skin mots!. not with
.
ice water. and have a fan blowing.
"The people who are at risk are the elderly , the
very young , people who are on certain medica ·
tlons. people who have heart diseases. and people

who are (n tremendou sly physical settings. The
otl)er people at ris k are people who have had
previous hea t illnesses ."
The state's weather Is so hot that customers of a
ma jor power system are expected to use more
electricity this week in an attempt to find relief
than in any one summer week in the last 80 years.
Officials of' the American Electric Power
System said Wednesday its more than 2.6 million
retail customers will use more electri city this
we('k th a n in any · sum mer week in its SO· year
his tory.
Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, AEP's
retail customers - resi dential, commercial and
industrial ..:.. used a n ail· time ·demand of 15.495
mUtton kilowatt s of electricity. That exceeded the
previous high of 15.347 million killow atts set just
the day before.
"It is fortunate that American Electric Power
has an ample power supply to be able to meet it s
own customers' requirements as wei! as to assist
its sister utilities in this and neighboring states
which may be in need of ext ra energy," said AEP
President Richard E. Disbrow.

The previous high demand !rom AEP before
this week's. heat wave was the 14.759 million
kilowatt s in 1986.
AEP operating unit & that hav e set individual
peak demands this week are the Ohio Power co. at
Canton; Indiana and Michigan E lectric Co. at
Fort Wayne, Ind., and the Columbus and Southern
Ohio Electric Co . in Columbu s.
Custom ers of Centerior Energy 's two operating
subsidiaries, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating
Co. a nd Toledo Edison, also used electricit y at a
record pace Wednesday.
For a second time this week, Centerior
cus tom ers set a record for electricity usage of
5; 1'73 megawatts, erasing the prev ious mark of
>. 164 megawatts set on Monday.
At 2 p.m . Wednesday, CEI customers were
usi ng 3. 722 megawa tt s of electricity, breaking
Monday's CE I record of 3,715 megawatts.
Customers of Toledo Edison were using 1.451
megawatts at 2 p. m ., falilng just short of the TE
record of 1,464 megawat ts also set Monday.

Remember who?
By DICK WEST
WASHINGTON- The Kuwaiti tanker AI Rakkah is expected to be
renamed the Bridgeton and become the first Arab vessel to fl y the
Amertccan flag In the Persian Gulf.
I have no quarrel with President Reagan's pia n eventually to
re-fiag 10 other Kuwaiti on carriers. Let us bear in m ind , however,
that sunken ships tend to ltve In America's memory.
Most of us probably stlll "Remember the Maine" although it has
been more than 85 years since that . U.S. battleship was s unk in
Havana harbor with a loss of 260 lives to precipitate the
Spanish-American War.
I don' t recall there was a conscious effort to remember the
Lusltanla after that ocean ltner was torpedoed off the coast of Ire la nd
in 1915 with a loss of 1,153lives. Nevertheless, many historians credit
the sinking of the Lusitanla with precipitating World World I.
Although no stmUar confiicts were precipitated, the seizure of the
Intelligence ship Pueblo by North Korean in 1968 remains fresh in the
national mind.
Would we react with similar belligerency if the Iranian s attac k the
Bridgeton?
It might be pretty hard to get the nation wor ked up over the motto
"Refllember the Bridgeton." But emotions would be left equally fi a t
by a slogan buUt around the tanker 's Kuwaiti name.
Somehow, "Remember the AI Rakkah " doesn ' t sound right or have
the same ring to it that " Remember the Maine' ' did , and does .
1'111 not suggesting that re- flagged Kuwaiti tankers be nam ed for
American states. That hard-to-forget honor · still belongs to u.s.
warships.
·
·
But If I were In Reagan's shoes, and wanted to obtain a reluctant
Congress's approval of the re-flagging program, I would pick out·
names that sound a lilt more hostile than Bridgeton.
Not that Bridgeton Isn't an honorable name. I just ques tion whether
It Is sufficiently belligerent to spark aggressive behavior.
Rather than call it the Bridgeton, I would rename the vessel th.e
Meese.
A headline writer with perhaps more aggression than 1 could
muster has described a $37,000 profit that Attorney General E dwin
Meese made on a $54,000 Investment as "small."
· Maybe It does seem that way to certain headline writers, inside
traders and other types of ln.,estors . I mean, had the head of the
Justice Department risked $540;000, he presumbly would have come
· out with a $370,000 profit.
