Playing games with
primary date again·

The politicians are starting to play games with Ohio's presidential
primary again.
In 1976, they moved the primary from May to June so Ohio would have a
better chance or detennln!ng the presidential nominees. That year, It
worked. Ohio locked up the Democratic nomination for Jimmy Carter.
But Jn 198!, there was nothing left for Ohio to determine by thetlme June
rolled around. So lit 1984, In order to give favorite-son Sen. John Glenn a
better shot at the Democratic nomination, the Ohlo primary .was switched
back to May.
·
Now there Is a bipartisan effort to move Ohio's presidential ballotlpg
fotward to March - early enough to contribute to a ground swell for a good
candidate. The date also coincides with the llUrols prln:lary, focusing
a ltentlon on the two big states.
The abn or Secretary or State Sherrod Brown, a ·Democrat, and
Republican state Sen. Stanley J. Aronoff or Cincinnati, Is to encourage
other nearby states to join In a Midwest regional primary.
They reason that If the presidential candidates ·zero in on several
midwestern states for a . few weeks, It ·will cut down travel and media
expenses. They are probably right.
Brown and Aronoff also believe a Midwest regional primary would focus
more national debate on Issues bnportant to Ohio, and If Ohlo plays a
deciding role, they say It will resWt In more federal appointments and
better treatment or the state by Was~ington.
That doesn't necessarUy wash. When was 1he last time you heard of
