curiosity of Amertcan vieWers as to
how the Republicans like to think of

·
Well, then, what happened was
deeply Instructive. The professional
dpcwrtentary on Reagan, on which
$!0l,o:x> had been spent, and about
which viewers )Vere wai"Jij!(j by
NBC's Tom Brokaw - visibly
nervous at his network's decision to
go with the Reagan documentarythat heavy propaganda was In store
for us , turned out to be . lB awful
minutes of visual glucose. It was lB
minutes of the March of Dimes.
Although one shouldn't be skeptical
about the good nature, good
lntenttosn and successtul policies of
Ronald Reagan, anyone who sees
that fllm would hesitate to
mend 11 to Disneyland as an
advertisement for Snow White. ~
At an Intellectual level, the movie
was as awful as the. unqualifted
enthusiasm Mr. Reagan depicted In
It for the Chinese communists,
whom we must Indeed work with as
a geopolitical necessity, but for
whose pollcles we should show no
more enthusiasm we should have
shown for Stalin's Russia, wre,J re
joined hands against Hitler.
The wonderful surprise came
rtght after the documentary. Ronald Reagan, speaking for himself,
his wl!cles, his party and his ,
country, was one'tl!ousand times as
effective· as any dollhouse document;~ry. The proposition that tbe
documentary was manipulative In
the sense that Reagan wasn't Is
absurd. The networks simply can't
get used to the essential point. It Is
that the Great• Communicator Is
genuinely that.

·debt will become so crushing that
the economy eouldn't generate
enough income to pay the loan
charges.
I have asked my. sources inside
the Treasury Department to a1;sess .
the financial Impact In order to give
the unwary taxpayer an Idea of
what a $2 trillion debt will mean.
Here's what their calculations
show:
'-- 11 the $2 trtlllon should be split ·
up equally, each taxpayer would
owe $21,lfi2.63 tn addition to his
regular taxes.
- Federal borrowing has pushed.
up tbe .Interest rates for everyone
by an estimated two percentage
points. If the btic:li!et were balan~
and the public debt redu~. ,
mortgage rates would be about 12
percent. This would mean more
Amertcans could afford homes.
-High 'interest rates have made
U.S. expor;ts so expensive, that
overseas sales have fallen 14
percent since 1!l!1. This has resuited in the loss of 1.3 nnllllon jobs.
So anyone whose livelihood depends on exports must worry about
Job security.
The public record ts littered with
warnings about the danger of
continued federal overspending. By

the end of the decade, for example,
just · the Interest cokts on the
government debt would be an
estimated $219 bllllon- almost halt
of the $563 billion that the govern-·
ment expects to collect In ·personal
and corporate lricome tax In 1989.
Budget director David Stockman
told congressmen he doubted that
they "could think of enough taxes to
raise or enough spending to cut to
offset that explosion of debt-service
cost."
·
The key to the problem can he
found Inevitably in Congress - In ·
Its reluctance to recQgnlze the
onrushing danger, tn the refusal of
Its members to ex!iend political
capital or take political risks for
economic stability, in its unwiillngness to tangle with the determined
special-interest groups of left, right
or center.
The solution depends on Amertca's political capacity to resolve
what ts at bottom a problem of
self-discipline. But In, political
affairs, It takes a catastrophe to
motivate Congress.
I fear the cataStrophe won't be
