Veteran Buckeye
coach feels his
team must wtn

By KEITH WISECUP
POMEROY - "We're In a
must-win situation against Meigs.
This wlll be the turning point of our
season," says Nelsonville-York
coach Dave Boston about the
Buckeye-Meigs crltical TVC encounter at Marauder Stadium
Frlday In the Meigs Homecoming.
While N-Y stands at ~1 overall,
both TVC teams are 2-1 Inside,
league play and hope to remain In
sight of front-runillng Belpre and
Warren, both at ~0. The hope lor
second place could be au that
remains for the loser.
Coach Charles Chancey's Marauders, 2-2 overall and winners of
two In a row, have performed better
their last tWo weeks and last ·
Frlday 's 33-8 ambush of Wellston
h;td Chancey saying, . "We finally
played close to our potential."
The Buckeyes lost their first
game last Frlday when they lost
four fumbles en route to a 2G-6
defeat at Belpre. Belpre passed for
288 yards but the Bucks stopped the
Eagle rushers cold.
While Meigs appears to be gelling
healthier, N-Y Is a little banged up,
but as Coach Boston put It, "That Is

no excuse."
Out for N-Y wUI be two-way
three-year starter Andy Grlnstead
who Injured his knee against MUler
In the Buckeyes' 35-0 onslaught over
the Falcons. Also out for the Athens
Countlans Is cornerback Brlan
;: McQuade, also with a knee Injury.
• - Good news for the Marauders Is
.- ·that linebacker Nick Bush could see
:: :Octton and possibly start. Bush, out
" two weeks with an ankle injury, was
• the Meigs' leading tackler before
:- his departure.
: ,· On the other hand, the Maraud-

,.

ers' outstand!ng and strong-man
two-way lineman Tony Welch Is
siated as doubtful because of an
ankle sprain. The 272 pound senior
anchors the Meigs line on both ·
sides.
Last year's 7-6game was decided
In the final 11 seConds when Nick
Riggs fired a pass to then-end Mike
Chancey from 15 yards ·out. That
game has heen discussed by Meigs
fans ever since.
According to the coaches, this
year's battle could be much the
same.
"We know they're a good football
team. They did not play well
against Trlmb!e, but are on the
upswing now. They're wellbalanced and wll! run a lot of power
sweeps. They throw well and are as
big and physical a team as We wUI
play," commented Boston about
Meigs.
Coach Chancey knows of
NelsonvUie-York's past success
(state champions In 1981 and
playoff quallflers in 1982) . "They're
a typical Nelsonvtlle-York team
with a strong defense. They're as
good a defensive team a.S we'll play.
They don't make mistakes and
have a winning program. they play
. good, aggressive football," remarked Chancey.
one· Buckeye to watch for Is
sophomore linebacker Dennis
Mays, younger brother of Ohio
University's Brlan Mays. Brlan
was an all ,Ohio pick and 'leader on
the Buckeyes' playoff team of the
past lew years.

Chester, Ohio, March 23, 1908.
Editor, Leader:
: I hardly know how to express my
gratitude In hearing through the
Leader of my old comrade, Morgan
ruchards. Vety glad Indeed to learn
that he still lives, and of his
whereabouts. When Ithlnk ofMorg,

It was. in April, 1862. Away out in
West VIrginia near a 11ttle town
called Princeton. We had a Utile
army of about 6,~ men commanded by Gen. Cox. As we were
nearing the Rebel camp, It was
disCoYered they were retiring
toward the narrows of New River.
It was hoped by sending our
regiment of cavalry on a crossroad,
we might cut ott some of them. Our
company had the advance of the
M!ment, and I was In command of
the advance guard. The day before
we had been amboshed by the
enemy. All we were nearing the
road on which the Rebs were
rrtreatlng, we were ordered to
dlmlount - evety fourth man lett
to. hold horses. As we had been
ambushed .t he day before, we
thouJht tile woods were tul! .of
Johnnies, just waiting to get us In a
good place before llrtng.

As we got wlthlil about two rods of
the road, here came one lone
Johnny going back towards t)le
town, As he got oppoolte us, he
stopped while looking down the
road, but he had 1101 seen us yet.
Morg Richards was at rlly left. We
both pulled up on him, . but Morg
Richards pulled trigger first. His .
gun ~ fire as we .had been
riding In the rain !Kl much . Mr.
Johnny jumped behind a log. I could
see about hal! of hJs hat. I drew
down on It thinking hls1head was In
lt. My gun did not misfire, but I
missed getting hlm, as he jumped
and ran for dear life. We ought to
have taken him prisoner, but that
was In the beginning of our fighting
and we thought everj tree and log
sheltered a Johnny.
We looked down the road and
there came the rear guard of the
enemy's army. The ,balance of the
regiment soon got there and we 11t
into them, but they jumped over the
fence and ran for the woods. We.
followed a while ilnd sent a few
shots ilfter them, went back to our
horses and found the man's hat that
I shot at with a hole through lt.
Someway, as I think about It now, I
am glad that Morg pulled trigger
before I did for my gun would have
got hJm as I was aiming at hls
- breast and was so close I could noi
haVe riUssed him.
As It Is now, I don'tknowasiever
killed a man, but I know I wounded
one after that. Morg, have I told this
stozy right? If not, correct me. aut
there Is one thlng more In connection with this that I wish to mention
as I have felt so disappointed about
It We learned after, that just down
the road the other way, the
Johnnies had two caMon and were
having trouble with their team
· some way, and when !hey heard the
firing so close and the man that I
shot at gave hls ·report, they cut
loose from the guns, left them
·Standing alone and rim and left
them, and came back in the night
and hauled them off.
