New Teamster boss ------------------------------------

WASHINGTON - Jackie
Presser, the beefy, street-smart,
56-year-<lld newly-elected president

administration." He'll be given a
chance today to reveal his plans for
cleaning up the mobster-lnflltrated

Orrtn Hatch, R-Utah, on proposed

Justice Department lUes paint an
unfiatterlng, !bough possibly unfair, portrait of Presser. They also
provide background matelial the

- An Aprtl 28, 19'n, Intelligence

- Another department report,
"Organized Clime and the Labor

"The organized crime afflllatlons
and Involvement of Presser
through and Independent of the
Teamsters Union are well
documented."
However, a source closer to
Presser told my associate Tony
Capacclo the report provides no
evidence of this supposed documentation. "You don't have even one
guy saying, 'We have Presser
playing golf with a known mob
member,' " he said.
- According to a stlll·secret
document, Informant James "The
Weasel" Fratlanno told federal
investigators that "through the
Intercession of Cleveland organized

agreed to allow (Fratlanno) the use.
of a mob financier to set up a union •
dental plan In Warren, Ohio."
The Presser associate said that
while Presser and Fratlanno's

- Another Informant, Camillo

New Jersey state troopers that
Presser was his contact In about
1975 for arranging loans through the
Teamsters' Central States Pension

Presser's associate said that no

Unemployment report .
heartens administration 1;-President Reagan's chief economic adviser, buoyed by a third
consecutive month of declining unemployment, pnedlcts that joblessness
by year's end will be less severe than the administration has forecast.
Following release of figures on Fliday showing the clvlllan
unemployment rate dipped a notch to 10.1 percent of the labor force,
MartinS. Feldstein said he felt joblessness would drop to the mld-<l,r low-9
percent range.
·
. That 's a roster view than the adminls~ratlon projected in ·la.te March,
when It reviSed 1983 economic assumptions. At that tlme, the President's
Councll of Economic Advisers, which Feldstein heads, pnedlcted that
unemployment would only dlp to below 10 percent by December.
In a meeting with reporters at t1le White House following release of the
latest job market figures, Feldstein was asked what the unemployment
rate would be at the end of the year.
"Somewhere in the mld to low nines," he replled .
On March 25, when the administration Issued a revised economic
forecast, Feldstein declined to predict an unemployment rate tor next
December. He dld Indicate, however, that the rate would barely break the
double-digit mark.

The · Bureau of Labor Statistics repon showed that the rankS o! the

"Double-digit unemployment with three straight months ot a drop of

Indians obtain ·slugger Gorlllan Thomas
MILWAUKEE !API - The
Milwaukee Brewers traded center
rlelder Gorman Thomas to Cleveland Tuesday a nd, in ,the opinion of
right fielder Charlie Moore. sent a
large part of their identity to the
Indian s with him .
''I'm su re Rick Marining will help
us. but it's just hard to imagine the
Milwaukee Brewers without Gorman Thomas," Moore said.
·'When we finallY got to the World
Series last year, everybody wanted
to know about-us. about Harvey's
Wa llbangers," he :,a id . "Gorman
just fit that role. Gorman a nd Pe te
Vuckovich, big, r u gged,
lu.m berjack -looking guys ... It's
hard to believe he's gone. I just hope ·
he tears up the league - except
when he plays against us."
Thomas. the ,first round draft
choice of thP Brewers' predecessors, the Seat Ue Pilots, in 19ffi, was
traded to the Cleveland Indians
along ·with pitcher Jamie Easterly
and minor league pitcher Ernie
Camacho Monday.
In return, the Brewers acquired
Ma nning, one of the better defensive
center fi elders in the American

League, at~d left-handed pitcher
Rick Waits.
Thomas was one of the most
popular players in Milwaukee
baseball history. Telephone callers,
most of them critical of the trade,
swamped the Brewers' switchboard
after the trade was announced.
Thomas had his phone off the hook
in his Waukesha County home most
of Monday. Buthewascontactedby
The Associated Pr,;.s .
" The trade is a case that
Milwaukee doesn't think I can play
any more," he said. " I don 't buy
that It hurtsanytlmeyou ' retraded,
but I've got nothing against
Cleveland."
Harry Dalton, Brewers' general
manager, knew the trade would be
unpopular,atleast forawhile. When
he discussed the trade, he made It
clear that theclub's centerfielderof
the future iS not Manning but Dian
James, a 20-year-old prospect
currently tear ing up the Pacific
Coast League.
"This can aid Dion James' entl)'
to the bail club, either later thiS year
or next year," Dalton said . "With an

establiShed center fielder like ManrUng, James won't have the pressure toproduce .r tght away."
,
Many close to the Brewers believe
there would not have been room for
Thomas and James on the same
team because of Thomas' fierce
pride in h!s defensive skills in center.
Dalton said Manning's defensive
abllitles will tighten the team's
overall defense and add speed.
Manning also will fill a need for
left ·handed hitting and is three
years younger than Thomas, Dalton
said .
" And what Waits has, and Jamie
doosn't have, Is major league
experience as a startlngpitcher, '' he
said. " He has 187 stansln the major
leagues. That will give us more
flexibility ."
Thomas, 32, the Brewers' center
fielder since 1978, led the American
League In home runs with 45 In 1979

year.

Easterly, 30, had a 0-1 record and

Manning said he was leaving the
Indians with mixed feelings .
Manning and Walts arrived In

Waits said he is looking for a fresh
