Bad press and
the econo~y
The economy ts getting a bad press these days, says Bill Dunkel berg. All
tills talk of depression is uMeressary, the Purdue University economist
says.
His gripe Is against those ubiquitous "observers," whose ranks might
Include academiCians, business people, government officials, President
Reagan's opponent~. journalists, alarmists.
"Many observers watch the economic Indica tors and tell us that In some
ways times are as bad as In the 19.lls, and that there is a real chance we
could experience another depression, " he said the other day.
"It the 19:Jls define a depression, we aren't eVen close," he said. 'Let's
get on with the process or renewal, an~ stop publicly worrying about
whether or not we are In a depression." We're not, he said.
That's saying a lot for a man who advises the National Federation of
Independent Buslness, which speaks for about 540,1m smaller businesses,
the kind that have been especially ravaged by bankruptcies. ·
Numbers, such as those for !allures, can be made to appear large or
small. Dun & Bradstreet counted more than 17,1mnon-flnanclalfallures In
1981, 45 percent higher than In 198! and double the num'ber of 1979.
Bad enough, says Dunkelberg, but let's have more perspective.
·~What we are not told is that real gross national product today is seven
times larger than that of the 19lls eConomy, and more than three times the,
size of the 1940s war economy," he said. "Today' s population is almost
do)lble that or the 19:Jls. And real per capita Income Is three times the 1933
level and twice the war year's level."
Perhaps the clearest way to see the dltferences between now and the
depression of the 19:Jls is to look at jobs, said Durlkelberg, who then
prOceeded to demonstrate he had been doing just that.
The joblPSs rate, which observers sometimes cite as evldenceofdepres·
slon, Is an Imperfect measure of economic well being, the professor con·
tends. "But why belabor Its det!clencles?" he asks.
·
Instead, he suggests, consider what would happen to the jobless rate It
the minimum wage were doubled. He didn't walt for an answer. "The
unemployment rate would rise because more workers would want a job,"
~ said. The lesson: Economic measures mu~t be understood to be used.
Ounkelberg contends that today' s rate really isn't comparable to rates
of' the 19:Jls. "To qualify for various types of transfer payments," he
olilerved, "people must be looking for jobs, that is, be unemployed."
Jllo disputing that. Stop looking for work and you quiCkly fall from the
unemployment ranks. No longer are you counted as part ot the labor force,
ruid no longer can you qualify for certain payments.

accurate duo walked eight and fanned eight.

Leading the Reds were Grimm
with a triple and single, Davis two
singles, and singles each by Frishette, Fisher , and Lawson. For
Pomeroy Brothers tripled and
singled, Fields singled twi ce, and
Hunnell doubled.
The second game was an actionpacked 21-8 bom b-shelling by

Gallipolis Padres. The old-fashioned

NATIONAL l...EAGUE

In an outstandmg perfohnance by
'ddl rt
, Danny Thomas, Mr epo caplured the Meigs-Mason Pony League

unloaded its heavy artillery on the
Padres.
Buchtel scored eight times in the
opening round and never looked
back. forcing the usually tough
Padres to play come-from-behind
ball. Both clubs exemplified good
nights at the plate, however, the
shell-shocked Padres didn 't get star·
ted wJtil it was too late.
Eckecs and Herb combined for the
win with nine walks, five strike outs,
and four hits including two horne
runs. Cui!ice suffered the loss.
Buchtel pounded out 10 hits in the
route led by Savage with two singles
and a home run, and Kirkenrlall with
a home run and single. Herb tripled,
Bullach singled, Young singled, and
Nelson singled for the winners.
Tarbell and Sloan homered for
Gallipolis while Cultice doubled, and
Werry singled.
Tonight at 6:30, two "Reds" meet
in the first semifinal game as
Racine's Reds meet the Rutland
Reds. In the next contest at 7:45 New
Haven's Reds will meet Buchtel in a
fight for the championship game.
The championship game and consolation event, along with special
awards, will be slated for Thursday
evening.

Preserve and serve peppers, peaches
By Dale M. Stoll
Meigs County Ext. Agent
Home Ecnomlcs
Peter Piper picked a peck of
pickled peppers ...
If you are planning on ptckhng a
peck of peppers, then please plan on
precise pickling procedures to
prevent problems!
Peppers, whether hot or mtld,
may be pickled. Th1s rec1pe includes
cttr1c acid as well as a long water
bath pr ocess. Th es e extra
precautiOns are mcluded for very
good reasons. Almost every year,
home-canned hot peppers cause outbreaks of botulism. Perhaps people
are mtslead into thinking that the
" hotness" will protect the peppers
from bacerial spoilage. Actually,
you must add acid and heat process
the peppers for safety.
Pickled Peppers
Slit whole peppers m several
places to allow ac1d brine to bathe
the inside and the outside of the pepper or cut peppers into pieces.
Loosely fill into canning jars. Peppers should never be solidly packed
Add a hot citnc ac1d brme made
by dissolvmg 2 tablespoons of
crystalline cttnc ac1d m one gallon
of water or 11<\! teaspoons of c1tr1c
acid per quart Brmg the cttr1c ac1d
brine to a boil and add to the peppers
to completely cover them tn the contamers.
After filling, exhaust jars of pep-

pers - 7 minutes for pinlll and 10
mmutes for quarts; seal and process
m a boling water bath.
65 minutes - pints
95 minutes - quarts
If other recipes for canned peppers of any type are used, make sure
peppers are loosely filled, use a
brme with a high proportton of
vmegar, and process them m a
bo1lmg water bath.
Sweet banana peppers, which
never get hot, can be used in thts
rectpe. You may want to wear
gloves when working wtlh hot peppers as they really bum !
It's peachy!
The peaches this year are just fantasltc and I have gone crazy making
all sorts of thmgs with the fruit .
When I shop for peaches, the first
thing I do is sniff. The peach should
smell "peachy". The peach should
look ~ood. with a yellow or creamy
background. The red color, or blush,
on a peach just makes it look pretty.
Choose peaches that are farly firm
or becommg a little soft. Very firm
or hard peaches With green
backgrounds should be avOided
This may not npen well .
Check local roadside stands for
peaches Some farms offer pickyour-own peaches. Handle the
peaches carefully, transferrmg
them to shallow containers to avoid
brutsmg Check the peaches daily

and use the r1pe ones llll soon as
possible.
Peilches are wonderful for the
dteter, as one medium peach contains only 38 calories!
I made peach jam recently and the
resullll were terrific. The following
rectpe is interesting and delicious :
Peaeb-Orange Marmalade
(without added pectm)
5 cups finely chopped or ground
peaches (about 4 pounds peaches)
1 cup fmely chopped or ground
oranges (about 2 med1wn-s1zed
oranges)
Peel off I orange, shredded very
fine
2 tablespoons lemon juJCe
&cups sugar
To Prepare Fruit - Sort and wash
fully ripe peaches. Remove stems,
~killS and pits. Fine!~ chop or grind
the peaches. Remove peel, white
portion and seeds from oranges.
Finely chop or grind the pulp.
To Make Marmalade - Measure
tile prepared fruit into a kettle. Add
remaining Ingredients and stir well.
Boil rapidly, stirring constantly, to 9
degree F. above the boiling point of
water, or until the mixture thickens.
Remove the heat; skim. F1ll and
seal containers. Process 6 mmutes
m botllng water. Makes 6 to 7 half·
pint jars.
If you would like a guide to jams
and jellies, contact the Meigs County
ElC!ension Office at 992-M96.

Herpes not always sex-related
By Hele1111a Sue Hottel
DEARHELENANDSUE:
When I waa younger, I had Herpes
I (fac1al eruptions). Then I broke out
w1th blisters down below, but I'd
never had sex, so figured they
couldn't be herpes. Ever since I've
had occasional sores around the
genitals.
Could this be Herpes II, and how
did I get it? Am I - UNSAFE FOR
LOVE?
DEARUSFL:
Herpes I (facial ) and Herpes II
(genital) are slightly different
viruses, but they can travel from one
area to the other, either by hand or
mouth, if open sores are present. '
There is also a possibility that they
may be transmitted via clothing,
towels or toilet seats, as the virus
leaves several hours after leaving
its host.
But don't assume you have herpes
until you consult a doctor. Yours
might be a more readily curable infection. - HELEN AND SUE

DEAR HELEN AND SUE:
I'm 18 and want more schooling,
but cQIIege costs are too much for
me. So I went to an Army recruiting
station and found out that the Army
pays up to 75 percent of tuition for
approvd college courses while
)'OU're enlisted. Plus, there is a
Veterans' Educational Assistance
Program that helps you save for
school later. l'd' be able to save
nearly $8,500 under it.
But I'm wondering about the pros
and cons of the Anny for women .
Helen and Sue, could you ask
readers who are in the Arrity to write
and tell me what I can expect' KATY

The hand appears to be a
cinch. But after taking
dummy's ace of diamonds
and casblng two high trumps
be aees that West baa a
trump trick. Apparently
there Is nothing to be done
with his third club except to
loee a trick with it.
Some Intense cerebration
dllrovers that at the rlllk of
going down one trick extra
be can find a way to avoid
that club loser. It will
require a good bit of luck,
but with a chance to make a
slam you are going to take
every chance.
South proceeds to cash his
ace of ltearts and king of
diamonds. Then he leads the
ace and a small club. U West
beld a singleton club be
would not gain by ruffing,
but West did bave to follow .
Now South takes the heart
lineae. II It looes be would
be down two, but fortune
smiles on South. Now be
cashes the remaining heart,

By ROBERT nJRLOW
A-.dated Preas Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -The U.S.

economy Is growing for the first
time since last summer, the government reported today. But the
gain so far can hardly be Clllled
robust.
New Commerce Department figures litdlcated that the broadest
measure otAmerlcan economic activity -Inflation-adjusted gross national product - rose at an annual
rate or 1.7 percent In the just-ended
April-June quarter. It had fallen
sharply In the previous two
quarters.
Earlier government reports
sllowed such Important economic
Indicators as Industrial production
and retail sales falling again In
June and many analysts had said
those reports showed recovery
from the recession had not begun.
But the second-quarter gain In
"real" GNP was bound to be read
as an encouraging sign that at least
some recoVery may be very close.
Two big contributors to the gain
were an Increase In Americans'
personal consumption spending
during the second quarter and a
slowdown In selling oft business
Inventory.
Inflation-adjusted personal
spending rose at an annual rate of
$7.2 bllllon, up from $5.7 bllllon In
the first quarter.
And the value or business Inventories, again adjusted tor Inflation,
dropped at a rate or $6.9 billion

In production destined for Inventories had been the.most Important

that quarter.
