With aU their starters listed

the Uons were going to be

winnerS drew first blood
when Tim Priest tipped one in

clock. But Southern countered when senior Richard
Teaford zipped a long one
through the cords to tie il.
Barry Turner put the Lions
back on lop with a jumper at
the 6:47 mark, but again the
smaller Tornadoes tallied on
a jumper by guard John

the period. From then on it

Southern made one last

material for the premium book on project work.
The week of March 12-18 is Girl Scout Week. Mrs. Thoma

She also notes that she has brochures for the Center of Science

" I've thrown every day I

has bothered me each lime ,n
Garland said. "The stiffness

follow that old rule.
As y9u can see this time
the lead was honest . All
. South had to do to make his
contract was to lead a heart
~fter winning the f·irs t trick
with his q ueen of spades
when East played the 10.
South did follow this procedure at tri ck ~hree . At
tr id~ tWo he led his kJng of

\

West could not tell where
the ace of clubs wa's . If East
held it West wanted to give a
cpunt so West started an
echo with t he five . East also
wanted to give count so he
echoed wi th t he nine s pot.
South believed both· of
them, abandoned clubs and
led his ja ck of hearts. Maybe
it would go through.
• II d idn 't , but the defense
could onl y collect their three
spade tricks. Had South
played the ace"king-j4ck of
clubs and overta ke n with
dummy's queen he would
have lost the easy contract.

to exceed $2,800 The standard deduction for 19n has
been increased t o $3,200, an
Increase of between $400 to
$1 ,100. A sunple defmihon of
the standard deductiOn is an
amount allowable as a
deduct iOn from Adj usted
Gross Income m lieu of
st ating allowable expen ses.
The standard deduction for
each type of taxpayer i e
married Joint, single, head of
household, is computed in the
tax tables found m the mstructwn books for tbe 1977
returns
In 1976, persons itemizing
thm deductions would list
them on the AB schedule and
reduce their adjusted gross
mcome by the total deductions claimed Tax would be
computed • usmg the rates
found In the tax rate
schedule Not so for 1977
returns. We still compute our
1temtzed deductions, usmg
the same general gUidelines.
The common Itemized
dedu ctions mclude Expenses for production of
mcome ; Med1cal and dental
expenses: Taxes , Interest ;
Chantable contnbutwns , and
Casualty losses. After
totaling the 1977 Itemized
deductions , the standard
deductiOn IS deducted The
remammg amount ts "Excess ttemized deductions,"
and only thiS amount IS
subtracted from the adju•ted
gross tncome to arnve at the
"tax table mcome." This
method IS used m 1977 to
permit as many people as
possible to use the tax tables.
Earher, I stated that the tax
tables were computed based
on the standard deduction ,
and to use the t>.x tables only
the amount m excess of the
standard can be subtracted
and still use the tables and
arrtve at the correct tax The
theory behind this change 1s
the less math mvolved m
completing a return, the less
probability of math errors.
Two examples should
clanfy the 1977method (I) A
mamed couple, filing a jomt
return , with one child and
adjusted
gross mcome of
1
·$17 ,925 If th1s couple had
$2,11:>0 In Itemized deductiOns,
they should use the standard
deduction The tax table for

three exemptiOn s, and AGI of
$17,9%5 shows a tax of $2,199
(the table mcludes the
s tand a rd
deduction
allowance) . (2) '11Ie same
co upl e
with
itemized
deductions of $3,825 will
benefil from itemizing. From
the total deductions of $3,825
they wlll deduct the standard
deduction or $3,200 The $625
