in some cases for years.
Those include the absentee ballot and voter registration changes.
LaRose also pushed an
item moving the date to
request absentee ballots
from three days to 10 days
before an election. Some
Democrats have blasted
the move as suppressive,
although both election
officials and voting rights
advocates have acknowledged that the current
deadline is so tight that it
puts voters at risk of making their ballots late and
ineligible to be counted.
Logistics also have
been cited as the reason
for eliminating voting
on the Monday before
an election. The legislation gives leeway to the

secretary of state to add
the six hours lost to other
early voting days, such as
in the evenings.
The bill would make
requesting an absentee
ballot online more difficult than requesting
a paper version is now,
requiring two forms of
ID rather than one. Seitz
argues that the two-step
authentication system
he’s outlined is necessary for election security,
mirroring requirements
already in place for online
voter registration. His
legislation also prevents
the state from using public funds to pre-pay postage for paper absentee
ballot applications or the
ballots themselves without legislative approval.

in everything to their
husbands” (Eph. 5:22-24
ESV).
This verse makes a
great deal of people
uncomfortable. But the
Bible is not calling men
superior to women. Nor
is it presenting submission as a type of slave/
master relationship.
Instead, the implementation of marriage is that
husband and wife serve
one another in selfless
love.
In other words, the
biblical way of implementing marriage,
though difficult to
interpret from a secular
perspective, is actually a
beautiful image of sacrificial love—both for the
husband and wife. F.F.
Bruce writes, “Christ’s
love for the church is a
self-sacrificing love, and
the same, it is implied,
should be true of husbands’ love for their
wives.”
In Ephesians 5, one
begins to understand
the glorious metaphor of
marriage. The glorious
representation of marriage in Christ is central
to understanding what
marriage is. At the end
of the day, a theology of
marriage asserts that a
husband and wife grow
closer to Christ through
their love for one another.
The institution and
implementation of a
God-centered marriage
is to represent God’s
work of bringing His
people to Himself one
glorious day.
In a world with such
a dim and disappointing view of marriage,
the Christian theology
of marriage must be
embraced and celebrated
again. May all Christian marriages be an
unrivaled expression of
God’s love for humanity
until the day when the
perfect Husband comes
for His spotless bride.

Ohio making another
play at legalizing
sports betting
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The latest proposal for
legalizing sports betting in Ohio calls for bringing
it to casinos, sports bars, mobile phones and maybe
even pro sports stadiums.
After months of listening to ideas, Republican
lawmakers in the state Senate rolled out a plan
Thursday that would allow 40 sporting betting
licenses around Ohio.
Half of those would be for locations that include
the state’s casinos and horse racing tracks called
racinos, which also could could hire outside companies to run sports betting online via mobile apps.
The other 20 licenses would be for sports bars
and similar locations where fans could watch games
and make proposition bets during the games.
Ohio’s pro sports teams are among those that
could apply for the type of licenses that allow ingame proposition bets, said state Sen. Kurt Schuring, a Canton Republican.
“We think it’s going to be an economic development tool for Ohio,” he said.
Ohio lawmakers have been going back-and-forth
on legalized sports betting for more than two years.
It has caught on quickly in other states after a U.S.
Supreme Court ruling in 2018 allowed for it to be
legalized in every state
Neighboring Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana
already offer sports betting at casinos.
Backers of the newest proposal hope the Ohio
Legislature will approve it by the end of June.
Each three-year license would cost $1 million,
Schuring said, although that could change once
state lawmakers begin ironing out the details.
It’s not clear year yet how much money the proposal, which includes a 10% tax, will bring to the
state, Schuring said. The money would go mainly
toward public and private education along with
gambling treatment and prevention programs.
“This is not about revenue generation,” he said.
Illegal sports gambling already is happening
in Ohio and “all we want to do is put guardrails
around it to make sure its done correctly,” Schuring
said.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission would
oversee sports betting regulations under the proposal.
The legislation also calls for allowing electronic
bingo at the state’s veteran’s and fraternal organizations.

River Valley’s Mason Rhodes is stormed by teammates after scoring game-winning run in the 12th inning of the Raiders’ 2-1 walk-off
victory on Wednesday in Bidwell, Ohio.

From staff reports

Well worth the wait. A
base hit by senior Blaine
Cline brought Mason
Rhodes around to score
in the bottom of the 12th
inning on Wednesday
in Bidwell, giving River
Valley a 2-1 victory over
Tri-Valley Conference
Ohio Division guest Vinton County. The Raiders
(12-8, 7-4 TVC Ohio) —
who topped the Vikings
(5-10-1, 4-5) by a 7-5
count on April 19 — set
a new school record for
wins in a season with the
triumph. Vinton County
led 1-0 after a two-out
error in the third inning,
but left the bases loaded
in the frame. River Valley didn’t make it past
second base in the first
six innings, but Chase
Barber drew a walk in the
bottom of the seventh,
and then scored on a
one-out single by Isiah
Harkins. RVHS, however,
left the potential gamewinning run on third
base. VCHS left a runner
on third base in the 11th
inning, and then stranded
one in at second in the
12th. RVHS didn’t reach
scoring position in extra
innings until the 12th,
when Mason Rhodes
singled to center and
then stole second. Cline,
the very next batter,

but Beattie singled and
later scored on a wild
pitch in the seventh to
complete the 3-run triumph. PPHS outhit the
hosts by a 13-8 margin
and both teams committed two errors apiece.
Bush led the guests with
three hits, while Morrow,
Beattie, Roach and Wyatt
Wilson each contributed
two safeties. Isaac Craddock picked up the win
after allowing two runs,
seven hits and two walks

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL
Meigs County Department of Job and Family Services (MCDJFS) is accepting
proposals from qualified providers to develop and coordinate a Peer Mentoring
Program through the Benefit Bridge Program. The Benefit Bridge pilot is being
launched through a partnership with ODJFS and Meigs County Job and Family

partnerships with a Care Team.
Peer Mentor will provide support, education, outreach, and engagement services
from a lived experience approach. The Peer Mentor will provide job readiness
skills and needed resources to identified individuals helping them obtain and
sustain independence. The Peer Mentor will lead and coordinated service with the
agency’s care team to provide a wraparound service to these identified individuals.
Interested providers must be skilled and experienced in operating programs to
diverse populations, as well as implementing peer-run evidence-based practice, and
in the measurement and reporting of outcome measures linked to evidence based
practices.
Interested parties must submit a proposal which meets the requirements of the

‘Ask, and it will be given to you…’
We have just held the
National Day of Prayer
observance across the
country including our
own in Gallia County.
While I was not able to
physically participate
this year, I am incredibly thankful that we, as
a community, can come
together and pray for
our land. It is a profound
blessing for us to be able
to gather in this way and
seek as one people God’s
forgiveness, healing, and
power for renewal.
Jesus’ work on the
cross is what it took
for our being able to
come to God. It is Jesus’
atoning sacrifice on the
cross that is the mechanism for God’s grace to
cleanse us and make us
presentable to come to
Him. It does not matter
what color skin we have,

flame of our worship and
devotion to God by boldly living and proclaiming
His truth in love. Let us
radically trust Him by
obeying His Word and
faithfully fulfilling the
call He has given us to
follow Him. Let us know
that there is no sin from
which His forgiveness
can cleanse us if only
we will repent and turn
aside from disobedience
in our own lives. Let us
know that there is not
one word in His Bible
written carelessly or
meaninglessly, but that
everything in it has been
preserved by Him for
our good so that we can
both know how to live
and also come to know
Him personally.
The days are evil, but
God is good. There is a

COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — Recording the
interrogations of individuals in custody and
accused of serious crimes
like murder or rape
would become mandatory under Ohio legislation
now in the state Senate.
Supporters of the bipartisan bill say recording interrogations protects suspects
from the use of allegedly
false statements made in
unrecorded interviews.
They also say it protects
police against allegations of
coercion and provides prosecutors accurate evidence
to use in a case.
Police would also have
to record interrogations
of suspects charged with
voluntary manslaughter,
involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular
homicide, attempted rape
and sexual battery, under
the bill.

ishness of God is wiser

preaching appears as a
weak approach by God,
but the weakness of God,
by the same standard, is
stronger than men.
It prevails upon us,
therefore, to consider
the strain and load that
weighs on the preacher.
The man is situated
between the hostility and
rebelliousness of human
nature, and the demands
of God’s holy expectations. The preacher, however, whose heart burns
for God, is literally oblivious to the former, and
dedicated to the later.

and treat it as your most

is supported by Jesus

You see, the man called

OHIO BRIEF

Preachers bear a heavy load
When preachers have
a message to deliver, it
involves more of a load
on the preacher than
church goers consider.
Prophet Malachi referred
to as “The burden of the
Word of the Lord.”
I thank God for men
called of God who preach
the truth of God’s Word.
In those moments of
proclamation, they have
the awesome task and
“burden” to speak to
the people on behalf
of Almighty God. It
is a dynamic and holy
exchange that goes on
during the delivery of a
message from the Book.
The hope of the saints
depends on it. The eternity of the unsaved is
affected by it. The morality of a people is guided
by it. The demonstration of the Spirit and of
power is manifested in it.
Preaching is that critical
experience whereby our
faith is strengthened to
stand, not in the wisdom
of men, but in the power
of God.

it will be opened. Or
which one of you, if his
son asks him for bread,
will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish,
will give him a serpent?
If you then, who are evil,
know how to give good
gifts to your children,
how much more will
your Father who is in
heaven give good things
to those who ask him!”
(Matthew 7:7-11 ESV).
