Pomeroy Council debates water, sewer increases
By Michael Hart
Special to the Sentinel

POMEROY — Pomeroy
Council debated an upcoming
water and sewer rate increase,
along with numerous other
matters, for two hours during
Monday’s meeting
A planned January increase
of 4.75 percent in water and
sewer service for village customers dominated the conversation.
The council requested an
amended ordinance for their
next meeting that would delay
the increase for three months.
The council further planned to
hold an extra meeting in January, in order to guarantee the
standard three readings for

ordinance changes, before the
rate hike comes into effect.
That move was preceded by
discussion of the health of the
village’s finances, specifically
the water and sewer accounts.
Clerk Sue Baker told council
the water department monies “are a lot better, not in
great shape, but better than
you were several years ago,”
largely due to last summer’s
large rate increase.
With the accounts trending
towards a positive balance,
council debated whether to
stick to the original plan of
a subsequent 4.75 percent
increase in January.
With minimum customer
payments stated to be $75,
Councilperson Ruth Spaun

said “We’ve got to be more fair
to the people of Pomeroy,” and
was adamant on a postponement.
“I agree, but at the risk of
not paying our bills?” questioned Councilperson Maureen Hennesey.
A three percent annual rate
raise for inflation is standard
by the Village, but multiple
increases in short succession,
along with recent boil advisories, has generated a great
deal of concern by Pomeroy
residents.
Councilperson Victor Young
suggested, in order to soften
the blow to citizens, a postponement that would place the
increases six months apart.
“I know will still probably

have to do it eventually. But
if we are headed in the right
direction, could we wait?
Since we did a big one just a
bit ago, I hate to hit people
again after just three months,”
he said.
The council settled on a
vote, to take place in January,
on an amended ordinance
which would delay the rate
increase until spring.
Council passed a resolution
for standard temporary January appropriations (prior to
the 2017 budget). They also
gave the Army Corp of Engineers permission in a parking
lot project, and approved
around $2,000 in expenses for
winter vehicle equipment and
police cruiser repair.

Mayor Bryan Shank told
the council he had been
approached by an individual
interested in selling land for
Beech Grove Cemetery. Shank
said he had made clear to the
individual the village had no
money to pursue the offer, but
agreed with Councilperson
Young who said the offer and
any information should be
brought to the public’s attention, given that cemetery
expenses are paid via levy.
There was no information
provided on the search for a
village administrator, as Shank
said the current candidate
were in contract negotiations.

A HUNGER FOR MORE

The ‘situations’
of the season
I don’t know about you, but I am very much fascinated by what makes people tick. I cannot resist
peeling away layers that camouflage or conceal that
which is underneath. Consequently, I am intrigued
by what appears in people when they find themselves
in situations that strip away pretense and rhetoric.
It is my personal conviction that the Christmas
season proves itself to be one of those “situations” in
which folks really find out what they’re made of.
Some folks, who hunger for something meaty (so
to speak) in everyday living, slow down a bit and
reflect on the love of God and one’s place in His plan
for the world. They’ve come to value things that
endure or at least know the vanity of pursuit of shallow values and goals. Such ones are inclined to share
tangible expressions of the love of God in acts of
kindness and generosity for people who are sick, or
are in genuine need, or are otherwise lonely and/or
forgotten. Setting aside their wants, they make time
and share even sacrificially with others as God opens
doors of opportunity. They remember that there was
once a Christmas present given for all the world in
a time of spiritual and moral darkness
and they reflect on just how much it
has meant for all who have received
it in the centuries that have come and
gone since then.
“For God so loved the world, that
He gave His only Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but
have eternal life” (John 3:16 ESV).
Thom

difference in the lives of others and
somehow connecting the lost and lonely of the world to the inconceivable grace of God.
But for some, Christmas is a “situation” in which
things other than love, joy, peace, hope, and thankfulness are exposed.
Consider an event several years ago in which a
poor Walmart employee in Queens, New York, like
an unarmed man at the gate, was trampled to death
by a modern day equivalent of the Huns crashing
through the doors of his place of work in Long
Island. The 34 year-old man died facing hordes of
mindless shoppers who were so savage that they
ripped off a metal part of the door frame (leaving it
looking like a crumpled accordion) as they trampled
anyone caught in their path. So fierce was the mob’s
assault that some of the Wal-Mart co-workers who
strove to rescue him were injured and taken to the
hospital.
Let’s all be horrified, but let’s not act surprised
by a violent progression of events. The madness of
after-Thanksgiving Day shopping has long been a
joke (and often the comedic story line in movies and
television shows). But now it turns out to not be so
funny.
Whatever dreams that this poor man may have
had for the holiday season were cut short. Whatever
family members he left behind had a bitter loss for
the sake of someone’s shopping list. I hope that I
am not the only one who is ashamed that greed has
besmirched a holiday named after our Lord. If some
have gotten the gist of Christmas, the hope that it
represents for all humanity, and the love it reveals of
our God, it seems all too evident that countless numbers have not. It doesn’t matter if we merely “talk the
talk” of the holiday season (or even sing the carols
of Christmas); values are played out in our choices,
especially when we don’t have time to think about
what others may think of us and we are simply do
what we feel like doing.
We are in our nature a greedy people. Why would
I think that? Because we consistently make greedy
choices in those situations that allow us to act naturally. Circumstances come to the stew pot of our
lives and stir up what’s really in us. While pride,
selfishness, hatred, and immorality too often come
to the surface, chief among them is greed: we want
what we want, and we want more than we have.
Again, for some the soup spoon of circumstance
brings love, generosity, and patient humility to
the top. These men and women (and even some
children) give without regard to getting. They give
because they’ve permitted God to put something of
His love into their hearts. It’s these folks who really
get Christmas, not those trying to get the best bargains at the store.
If anything (including shopping) is capable of
stripping away from us kindness, patience, ethics,
honesty, and love, we have a serious spiritual problem. Think of even the “small ways” that our “true
selves” are revealed if we’re racing without regard for
others to be first in the checkout line or pull in front
of someone else to get the closest parking spot to the
door. Are such behaviors and attitudes truly becoming to the children of God and the Savior Whom we
represent to the world? I think not.
Besides, those who learn best how to give are also
the ones who really get the most from this season
of celebration. They’re the ones who really have the
most to celebrate: the love of the Son of God Who
came to give His life is not just Savior, but Lord of
their hearts as well.
Keep Christ in Christmas indeed! But remember
that to keep Him in Christmas, you must also keep
your heart in His hand!
The Christmas season is a celebration of God’s
Son’s first advent into the world. He came as a Servant so that we might have eternal life and, in turn,
become servants of God as well. As He has come to
serve us by saving us from our sin, let us now each
one go and serve others by following His example
and putting them before ourselves.

Let us first note that
kings and princes are told
that it is unsuitable and
wrong for them to ever
drink intoxicating beverages. They have duties:
duties to the law and
duties to doing the right
thing. Mind altering substances are going to interfere with those duties, and
perhaps cause them to be
done wrongly. This admonition is of particular relevance to Christians who
have been told by God that
they are both kings and
priests in God’s Kingdom.
(Revelation 1:6). This
degree of honor is true of
all Christians, not just a
select few. Peter reminds
his readers that they are
a royal priesthood and a
holy nation (1 Peter 2:9).
If you have been saved
by Christ, then you are a
child of God, an adopted
heir of the immortal Lord,
a brother to the King of
kings, and God expects
great things from you. (cf.
Romans 8:14-17) If this is
your calling, you should
walk worthy of the calling.
It is not suitable for
kings and princes to drink.
On the other hand, the
Scriptures are quite clear
that drunkenness is suitable for the “perishing.”

The original context of
the proverb likely refers
to criminals about to be
executed for their crimes,
such as rape or murder.
Alcohol was used to dull
their pain and make the
death more humane. But
the application is made
broader by the context
of scripture, wherein the
perishing refers to those
who are lost in their sins,
separated from His grace
and destined for hell. (cf.
Romans 6:23; Luke 13:3;
Revelation 21:8) The message is quite clear. If you
are lost in your sins, going
to hell, and don’t really
care enough to change and
seek the salvation God
offers, go ahead - drink,
get drunk, carouse, and
try to pretend that everything is fine. But if you are
a child of God, a prince
in the Kingdom of God,
and have been promised
a throne and a crown of
your own in His eternal
home: you have better
things to do with your
time and your mind.

BELPRE, Ohio — Take care of the ball, and the

fewer turnovers than Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division guest Eastern, on Thursday night in
Washington County, as the Golden Eagles rolled to a
74-58 victory.
Eastern (3-3, 3-2 TVC Hocking) trailed 15-to-12
after eight minutes of play, and the hosts extended
the lead to 30-22 by halftime.

clip in the third quarter, and the Orange and Black

Eastern scored 21 points in the finale, but the

White Falcons crush Lancers
By Paul Boggs
pboggs@civitasmedia.com

MASON, W. Va. — As expected,
Wahama had no trouble at all in
this one.
That’s because the host White
Falcons, in a Tri-Valley Conference
Hocking Division boys basketball
tilt on Tuesday night, soared past
the winless Federal Hocking Lancers 79-41 at Gary Clark Court.
The White Falcons outscored
Federal Hocking 14-4 in the first
quarter, maintained a 28-17 halftime advantage, then erupted for
51 second-half points — including
winning the third period 26-10.

Wahama hammered the Lancers
51-24 in the second half, doubling
its cushion to 54-27 following
three.
With the win, the White Falcons
are now an even 2-2 — both overall
and in the TVC-Hocking.
Federal Hocking fell to 0-8, and
0-5 in the league.
Philip Hoffman poured in 26
points to pace the White Falcons,
amassing 10 total field goals on 14
shot attempts —along with making
5-of-6 free throws.
Right behind Hoffman was Noah
Litchfield, who amounted 20 points
on nine total field goals with 15
shot attempts.

Randy Lantz, on five field goals
and a free throw, landed double
digits with 11 points.
As a team, Wahama shot 28-of-48
from inside the arc, while making
all four of its three-point tries.
Hoffman, Litchfield, Mason Hildredth and Jacob Lloyd all drained
a three-point goal.
Hildredth had five points, as
Lloyd, Tyler Bumgarner and Abram
Pauley posted four points apiece.
Isaiah Pauley made a pair of foul
shots, while Abram Pauley and
Bumgarner both garnered two field
goals.

Inconsistent Ohio State working to smooth out passing game
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) —
Whether Ohio State can beat
Clemson in the College Football
Playoff next week could depend
on which version of the wildly
inconsistent Buckeyes offense
shows up to play in the desert.
Will it be the score-at-will
unit that averaged more than
53 points through the first five
games and blew away Nebraska
and Maryland 62-3 on back-toback Saturdays in November?
Or the bunch that bumbled to
an upset loss at Penn State, and
looked nearly as off-kilter in narrow wins over Northwestern and
Michigan State, with spotty pass
protection, receivers who can’t
get open and J.T. Barrett run-

ning for his life?
Much of that will be determined by Barrett and whether
he can help shore up the Buckeyes’ uneven aerial attack and
complete passes down the field
against a Clemson defense with
four All-ACC first-teamers. He
and his receivers say that’s been
a large part of the focus in practices leading up to the Dec. 31
Fiesta Bowl.
“What I see from J.T. is he’s
got his head down and he’s going
to work,” wide receiver Noah
Brown said. “He knows what he
needs to work on, and he knows
what we need to work on.”
Make no mistake, Ohio State

Hall, Ironmen break
Blue Devils’ hearts
By Paul Boggs
pboggs@civitasmedia.com

JACKSON, Ohio — Bryce Hall will likely be
best remembered for his touchdown passes as a
Jackson Ironmen football quarterback.
The Gallia Academy Blue Devils, conversely,
would prefer to forever forget how Hall broke their
collective hearts on Tuesday night.
That’s because Hall hit a three-point shot at the
final buzzer, handing the visiting Blue Devils a
heartbreaking 60-57 non-league boys basketball
loss.
Hall, playing basketball for the first time since
junior high school in Jackson, nailed the triple
from the left wing with no time remaining.
Payton Speakman made the pass to Hall, breaking a 57-57 tie after Gallia Academy’s Miles
Cornwell converted 2-of-3 free throws with nine
seconds to play.
The two squads stood tied at 16-16 after the
opening quarter, before Jackson took a 33-30
halftime advantage — and held a 43-42 edge after
three periods.
Both teams tallied 22 total field goals, as Gallia
Academy made 9-of-13 free throws and the Ironmen 8-of-14.
But Jackson drilled eight threes compared to
four for the Blue Devils, as the Ironmen were 8-of20 from long range — while GAHS shot 4-of-11.
For Gallia Academy, the difficult defeat dropped
it to 4-2 — as the Blue Devils’ first heart-breaker
came against Point Pleasant in overtime two
weeks ago (Dec. 9).
That was a 66-64 setback, meaning both Blue
Devil defeats are by a combined five points.
The improving Ironmen are now 4-3, having
snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
Carson Spohn, on 10 total field goals including
four three-pointers, sank 24 total points to pace
the winners.
Hall hit for 13 points on five total field goals,
including a pair of treys, and 5-of-6 free throws.
Speakman made two three-balls towards eight
points, while Cooper Donaldson dialed in one en
route to seven.
Donaldson — the tallest player on the Jackson
roster at six-foot, two-inches tall — led the smaller
Ironmen with eight rebounds.
Josh Spires scored two buckets for four points,
while Kendall Neal and Blake McCoy made a basket apiece.
Gallia Academy’s Justin Peck, on eight field
goals, posted a team-high 16 points.
Justin McClelland canned 15 points for the Blue
Devils, netting five field goals — including three
trifectas —and 2-of-3 foul shots.
Cornwell, with seven points, connected for the
other three.
Evan Wiseman, with four field goals and 4-of-4
free throws, tossed in a dozen points — while
Zach Loveday landed two field goals for four
points.
Gage Harrison had a basket and Cory Call a free
throw to round out the Blue and White scoring.
Loveday with 10 and Wiseman with eight led
the Devils in rebounding, while Wiseman dished
out four of the club’s 10 assists.
The Blue Devils return home, and return to
action tonight (Friday, Dec. 23), when they host
South Gallia for another non-league duel.

Litchfield, Lloyd and
Travis Kearns (three
points) all split a pair of
free throws.
The Lancers were
10-of-24 from two-point
range, and 4-of-6 from
deep, thanks to 3-of4 — all in the second
stanza — by Deakin
Hatfield.
Hatfield had 11
points, as Jared Hank
hit game-high honors
for Federal Hocking —
racking up 14 points on
six total field goals and

a free throw.
Hank had the club’s
only other three in the
third, as his field goal
— along with one by
Braden Gould —gave
Federal Hocking its four
first-quarter points.
Gould finished with
three field goals and
2-of-4 foul shots for
eight, as Quinton

added a bucket.

freshman Mike Weber, All-American hybrid back Curtis Samuel
and one of the best defenses in
college football.
But the glaring weakness is
the passing game: Receivers
struggled to get open, Barrett
could be tentative pulling the
trigger and pass protection was

leaky, often caving in on right
tackle Isaiah Prince. Barrett was
sacked a half dozen times in the
Penn State loss. In the doubleovertime win against Michigan,
he was flattened eight times
and didn’t complete a pass over
16 yards. A reliable deep threat
never did emerge this season
from a promising pool of wide
receivers.
Ohio State contends it can be
fixed by bowl time.
“We’re putting a lot more
emphasis on the passing game to
continue to develop that, both in
protection and routes and quarterback play,” said co-offensive
coordinator and quarterbacks
coach Tim Beck. “I like what I

see.”
As is typical of Barrett,
there hasn’t been a lot of handwringing. Even when the passing game looked its worst, he
insisted there was nothing terribly wrong that couldn’t be fixed
with a couple tweaks. He doesn’t
think he’s too conservative about
letting go of the football, noting
his 24 touchdowns against just
five interceptions.
“That’s my thing, I think I’m
really good at making good decisions, making sure that we’re
not hurting the team (with) field
position and things like that, and
that’s me protecting the football
and not turning it over,” Barrett
said.

Browns fighting despite prospect of winless season
BEREA, Ohio (AP) —
Not for lack of trying, but
of talent, the Cleveland
Browns aren’t winning.
They aren’t quitting,
though.
Faced with the very
real possibility of running the table and going
winless over 16 games, it
would be easy for them to
wave the white flag, surrender with two games
left, pack it up and be
done with this miserable
season.
Coach Hue Jackson has
experienced that with
players elsewhere.
“I know what they look
like, feel like, act like and
all of it,” Jackson said
Tuesday. “I have seen it. I
have not seen that in this
group.”
The Browns (0-14) are
bad, and they may soon
go down as one of the
worst teams in NFL history, but they plan to do
it swinging.
“I think we still have
some fight in us, we’re
still focusing on finishing

this season off strong,”
said nose tackle Danny
Shelton, whose improvement in his second year
has been one of the few
positives in an otherwise forgettable season.
“There are a lot of guys
who still believe.”
Terrelle Pryor leads
the list. The team’s top
wide receiver intends to
play in Cleveland’s final
two games — home on
Christmas Eve against
San Diego and at Pittsburgh on New Year’s Day
— with a torn ligament
in his right middle finger,
an injury that will require
surgery, which has been
scheduled for the day
after the Steelers game.
Pryor got hurt on the
first play of the second
half in Sunday’s game at
Buffalo when he reached
down to catch a low pass
from quarterback Robert
Griffin and jammed his
fingers on the artificial
turf.
Following Tuesday’s
indoor workout, Pryor

described the painful
mishap.
“Every single time I
bent my knuckle, my
knuckle felt like it got
smashed with a hammer,”
he said. “It was flat.”
Pryor tried taping his
fingers together during
the 33-13 loss, Cleveland’s 17th straight over
two seasons, but that
didn’t work and he spent
time on the sideline trying to get it so his finger
would straighten.
He worked with the
team’s medical staff over
the past two days on
fitting him with some
protection and he’ll play
with a partial cast covering his finger.
Earlier this year, Pryor
said he was willing to
go to extreme lengths,
saying he would even be
willing to cut off a finger
to help his team win.
“I meant what I said a
long time ago about the
finger and now I’m here,”
he said. “So it’s time to
go. It’s time to live up

to what I said and I’m
excited it.”
Despite the negativity
surrounding his team, the
late-night TV jokes and
attempts by some fans
to organize a downtown
parade if the Browns
complete an imperfect
season, Jackson has been
strengthened by his players’ resolve.
The Browns haven’t
given up.
“This is a tremendous
group,” Jackson said. “I
don’t think anybody has
said, ‘OK, we are not
going to be out there’ and
not want to be out there.
Guys have some excuses
where they could use
them so that could not be
out there, but I have not
seen anybody do that.
“I think what is important is playing with your
teammates and finishing
this thing the right way
and getting better and
taking these opportunities to continue to grow
as a team. That is what
all our players are doing.”

Steelers hopeful Tuitt can play against Ravens
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt politely shooed away
reporters on Monday when they
approached his locker, saying he
needed to go get an MRI on his
achy right knee. Tuitt then walked
away without any sort of noticeable limp.
He wasn’t just playing tough for
the cameras.
Coach Mike Tomlin indicated
there’s a chance Tuitt could play
when Baltimore visits Heinz Field
next weekend after the exam
revealed Tuitt only sprained his
knee when his right leg twisted
underneath him three plays into
Pittsburgh’s 24-20 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday.
“We will watch him participate
over the course of the week and see
what that participation looks like,”
Tomlin said Tuesday. “Obviously
the position that he plays gives him
an opportunity, probably it would
be less likely so if he was a wide
receiver or cornerback.”
Tuitt was closing in on Bengals

quarterback Andy Dalton when he
reached out with his left hand and
snagged Dalton’s facemask. He let
go almost immediately while at the
same time pirouetting awkwardly
on the Paul Brown Stadium turf.
He managed to walk off without
any help, though he spent the rest
of the afternoon in a jacket on the
sideline at the Steelers (9-5) rallied
for a fifth straight victory to set up
what amounts to an AFC North
title game against Baltimore (8-6)
on Sunday.
There’s little doubt Pittsburgh is
better when Tuitt is on the field,
particularly with Cam Heyward
already out for the season with a
torn pectoral muscle. Yet what was
left of the line — Javon Hargrave,
Daniel McCullers, L.T. Walton and
Ricardo Mathews — eventually
found their footing. The Bengals
ran it seven times for just eight
yards over the final 30 minutes
as the Steelers steadily recovered
from an early 14-point deficit.
“We knew we had to play big in
the second half,” Hargrave said.

“We let them start quick, so we
knew we had to respond and grind
it out.”
Pittsburgh will need to rely on
that grit if it wants to end a fourgame losing streak to the Ravens
and clinch its second division title
in three years. The Ravens won
the first meeting 21-14 on Nov.
6 despite being limited to just
50 yards on the ground. They’ve
improved steadily in recent weeks
and put together a season-high 151
yards rushing in a 27-26 escape
against Philadelphia last weekend
while splitting carries between Terrance West and Kenneth Dixon.
Part of the credit goes to an
offensive line that’s found some stability. The rest to West’s ability to
find a hole and go. Yet Pittsburgh’s
defense has steadily improved
during its surge into first place.
The Steelers are allowing just 64.6
yards rushing per game during
their current winning streak, way
down from the 102.6 yards per
game they gave up through the season’s first nine weeks.
