CHURCH ON WHEELS - The Bradbury Church of Cbrist was taken to a new location Monday morning by a
crew of expert movers from Charleston, W. Va. Relocation of the church was necessary to make way. for the new
section of Route 7 that will go through Bradbury. The c burch, erected In 1893. was moved to near the WMPO
Radio station on the Joe Bailey property. It's piano and pews remained in the 40 x 60 ft. building while it was
moved. The. steeple and bell tower had been removed earlier. Poli~e: crews from the Columbus and Southern
Oh1o Electnc Co., General Electric ~mpany workers, and state offlcJals were on hand as the 35 ft. high structure
was hauled along the htghway.-Sentinel photo.

In this country only take place in auch
urban centers, and often the accidents
o! rural area• are shoved into the background. When National Farm Safety
Week is observed starting Sunday it
might be a good idea for persons Uke
ourselves, who reside in rural areas to
take a long hard look at the record . It
would show on a population basis that
the most dangerous place to be is In a
rural area. During the year 1964 one
third of all accidents took place in rural
areas. and two·thirds of all traffic deaths
were charged not to the cities but to rural highways. A break down of accident.!!
In Meigs county would show that the
vast majority took place on county and
townahip roads. The fatal count might
not be so high, but in numbers these
roada head the list.

All one baa to do Is look at the statlltlcllo aee how true the accident prone
lituatlon is in rural areaa. In the first
tm. montha of thla year in Ohio there
WUII over 32,000 accident• in towns and
clt111 from 50,000 and over down to
town1 of 2,000. At that same time there
WUII 16,2114 in villages, rural state highway• and other rural roads. It goes to
idlow that tht average driver presses
down on the accelerator when he aeea
tbt hoUJIS getting few and far between.
Rllnlaccidenta on state routes make up
llalf tbe rural accidents at 8,967. One of
tbe alarming statistics is that one out of
every 45 accidents in rural areas had fabl reaulta. It took 180 acci dents on city
llntts to product 1 fatality.
The 1afety experts tell uo that there
baa been some improvement in the year
just past. Traffic death• on rural state
ro~ds dropped eight percent during
1964, and It shows that a) least some drivers are beginning to see the light. It
ahould be recogni•ed that there are special driving •ituations in rural areas.
There are slow-moving vehicles, farm
tractors, and in many ca"" under·age
drivers. A new law in Ohio that will go
Into effect in 1966 will provide for opecia! emblems on vehicles designed to operate at speeds of 25 miles per hour or
less. Even horse·drawn vehicles will
have to have reflectors and lanterns to
ohow that the slowest of all types of
traffic is on the highway . Some of the
- most tragic accidents we remember was
to hayriders in Central Ohio, who were
struck by faster moving vehicles.
In this modern age a lot of attention
Is being paid to the high-speed four-lane
state routes and interstates, but we feel
that even more attention should be paid
to the connecting roads. especially the
.. county and township roads to make them
safe. This county has hundreds of tho
most precious possessions of families,
our children riding buses every day that
are hardly aa!e for the slowest moving
vehicles. There should be an ever continuing program to eliminate the narrowneat and blind curves from these roads.
It will take years to bring about the sale
construction that Is Indicated, and if we
had alfrled tbe campaign to accomplish
thll with the coming of the auto a~e we
would now be in 1 much better pos1tion.
Engineers can build safety into highway•, but tht final measure of safety is
for 1 driver, especially on the narrow
roada to alter bl1 driving apeed to ault
eondltions.
