Staff report

RACINE — The Racine
Area Community Organization
held their first regular monthly
meeting of the year Jan. 26 at
Star Mill Park in Racine.
A discussion about scholarships for Southern Local High
School seniors headlined the
meeting. Applications will be
taken to the high school and

given to all interested seniors
in March. The exact date
has not been set at this time.
RACO will be giving up to 10
$1,000 scholarships this year.
The application is also for
other scholarships, including
several memorial scholarships.
The date for the next RACO
food drive was announced. The
drive will take place May 2 at the

Spring yard sale will be May 12,
13, and 14 at Star Mill Park. All
proceeds from the yard sale will
be used for next year’s scholarships to Southern seniors who
plan to further their education.
The organization discussed
several projects they had going
on during the Christmas season. RACO distributed 300
treat bags at Christmas time to
area residents. The winners of

the RACO Christmas lighting
contest were: first place – Steve
and Julie Randolph ($100
prize), second place—Billy
Jr. and Vicki Hill ($50 prize),
third place —Tony and Tonya
Thacker ($30 prize).
Discussion then shifted briefly to money RACO donated to
the Racine Fire Department
($200) and $200 to a food
drive held Nov. 1. All proceeds

from the food drive are given to
the Meigs Cooperative Parish.
The secretary and treasurer’s
report were also presented and
approved. There were nine
members and one junior member in attendance. President
Kathryn Hart presided over
the business meeting. The next
meeting is set for Feb. 24 at Star
Mill Park. RACO is encouraging
that new members are welcome.

Gas prices begin to creep upward

BEND AREA — With the deadline now
over, both Mason and Hartford have full
slates of candidates running for office in
the June 9 municipal elections.
It was a slow start, with the first complete week of the filing period going by
without seeing a single candidate. Even
after the second week, only two had
entered the Mason race, and still none in
Hartford. But with the deadline of Saturday, Jan. 31, came candidates to fill the
tickets.
In Mason, incumbent Donna Dennis will
face Larry Daniel for the mayor’s seat.
Dennis first stated she would not seek
the office, after having been appointed by
council to fill the unexpired term of Jerry
Tucker upon his resignation. Mayor Dennis revisited her decision and filed on the
final day. Daniel sought the mayor’s seat
two years ago, but was defeated by Tucker.
Running for recorder is incumbent Ciji
Casto. Casto was recently appointed to the
position following the resignation of Mary
Kitchen.
Six candidates filed for the five council
positions. They include incumbents Emily
Henry, Ray “Porky” Varian, and Marty Yeager, as well as newcomers Ronald Heath,
Becky Pearson, and Bob Reed. Present
council members who chose not to seek reelection are Ralph Ross and Bob Wing.
In Hartford, Gordon Spencer and James
Zerkle will be vying for mayor. Spencer
currently serves as a council member.
Incumbent Cheryl Oldaker is the lone
candidate for recorder, a position she has
held for 17 years.
Just like Mason, Hartford will have six
candidates facing off for five council seats.
They are incumbents David Burris, Patty
Neil, Carol Spencer and Leeann Zerkle,
along with newcomers Natalie Staats and
Billy Roush.
Those wishing to run for office in either
town can still file as a write-in candidate.
The deadline is April 21.

Gas prices have risen by 15 cents since Jan. 27 due to refinery issues in the Midwest and crude oil prices are trading at more stable levels. The
average gas price in Pomeroy is around $2.12, while Gallipolis is also around $2.12. According to AAA, unless something substantial happens to
cause the global oil prices to rise, the U.S. average is expected to be below $3 throughout 2015.

THEIR VIEW

Don’t punish
parents
for teaching
You might have heard of the term “helicopter
parents,” which describes adults who constantly
hover over their children and make all their decisions for them, lest any harm come to them or any
mistakes be made by them.
In recent years, however, a backlash movement
has grown against parenting with such a tight
leash; it’s known as “free-range parenting.”
Free-range parenting encourages treating children as intelligent and capable, and allowing them
to grow by becoming more independent, not
encasing them in bubble wrap. It recognizes that
“Our kids are not in constant danger,” Lenore Skenazy told us; she founder of the movement, author
of the book and blog “Free-Range Kids,” and star
of the new show “World’s Worst Mom” on the Discovery Life Channel. “Our children don’t need a
security detail every time they leave home.”
Contrary to popular perception, the country has
actually gotten safer, though one may be excused
for thinking otherwise, given the prevalence of
crime shows on TV and sensationalized media
coverage of some of the rare instances where children are abducted and harmed.
Yet, the government is the ultimate helicopter
parent when it comes to making life decisions —
including parenting one’s own children. And dissent from this philosophy is not to be tolerated. A
Silver Spring, Md., couple has found this out the
hard way.
Danielle and Alexander Meitiv are now being
investigated for child neglect for the supposed
crime of allowing their 10-year-old son and 6-yearold daughter to walk home together from a park
one mile away.
In a depressing sense, one supposes it is only
natural for an ever-growing and encroaching government that seeks to coddle its subjects from
cradle to grave to enforce such coddling parental
behavior on its citizens. But the dependency this
breeds is antithetical to freedom and the sense
of personal pride that comes from such independence.
Parents should not have to fear being locked up
or having their children taken away from them
for allowing their kids the freedom to explore the
world the way our parents did. Children and adult
citizens alike should even be afforded the freedom
to make mistakes — and to learn from them.

Biomechanics expert to conduct medical testing
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Dr.
Suzanne Konz of the Marshall
University College of Health
Professions is heading to next
month’s NFL Combine to assist
in the medical evaluation of more
than 300 professional football
Konz
hopefuls.
Konz, director of the biomechanics laboratory and an associate
professor in the college, said this is her
seventh year attending the combine to
conduct isokinetic testing on collegiate
athletes from across the U.S.
“Isokinetic testing is a speed-based
test which measures the strength and
endurance of a muscle. This type of
testing is necessary to determine the
stability of the knee and possible longevity of these athletes,” Konz said. “To
be invited back for the seventh year in
a row gives me the opportunity to build
upon my knowledge of these testing
devices, which benefits our own athletes here at Marshall University.”
Konz said isokinetic testing was
performed on members of the Marshall
football, basketball, soccer and baseball
teams this past year. Brandi Anders,
assistant athletic trainer for the Marshall women’s basketball and tennis
teams, said the information provided by
the isokinetic testing helps show if the
players were at risk for injury or already
had an injury, which may need to be
addressed further.

“We conducted the test twice:
once at the beginning of the
semester and again following
their pre-season. We compared
results to see if the athletes had
improved their muscle balance
between the hamstring and
quadriceps. Additionally, we
will conduct testing following
the season and going into their off-season workouts,” Anders said. “Dr. K does
an excellent job of explaining the benefits of this testing to the athlete and the
gains it can help him or her achieve athletically. By providing these numbers,
the athletes can focus more on ways to
improve their body and decrease risk of
injury moving forward.”
Dr. Gary McIlvain, chair of the School
of Kinesiology and associate dean for
the college, said many people do not
know the benefits of studying biomechanics and how the university has its
own expert here on the Huntington
campus.
“Dr. Konz and her expertise in isokinetic testing is a valuable resource for
the School of Kinesiology programs,
our students and campus athletes. Her
experience in testing Olympic, collegiate and professional athletes is a
resource students seek out when learning to administer and interpret isokinetic testing,” McIlvain said. “There is
nothing that brings the classroom to life
more than real-life experience and that

is exactly what Suzanne Konz brings
to those studying biomechanics here at
Marshall University.”
Konz will travel to Lucas Oil Field
in Indianapolis Feb. 16-20 for the 2015
NFL Combine. Media are invited to
attend an isokinetic testing demonstration at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4 in the
Athletic Training Laboratory located in

Timberline launches ‘snowfunding’ campaign
DAVIS, W.Va. — Timberline Four Seasons
Resort, in the heart of
Canaan Valley in West
Virginia’s Allegheny
Mountains, has joined
with Destination Crowd
Capital, based in Washington, D.C., to launch the
world’s first snowfunding
campaign at www.snowfunding.com.
The campaign’s goal is
to use crowdfunding to
raise money to fund snowmaking, resort improvements, and sustainability
initiatives. For their support, campaign backers
will receive greatly discounted lift tickets and
lodging packages.
“Timberline is really
one of the best-kept
secrets on the East Coast.
We receive almost 180
inches of snow annually,
spread across 10 miles
of ski runs, including the
two mile long Salamander
Run,” said Fred Herz,
co-owner of Timberline.
“Our mountain rewards
skiers with a long season,
days of knee-deep powder,
a thousand foot vertical
drop, and truly varied
and challenging terrain.
With our snowfunding
campaign, we can make
this an even more special
destination with snow
that is as close to perfection as we can make it,
well groomed ski runs and
a family atmosphere.”
“Timberline has been a
part of my family for over
30 years, one of the last
family-owned resorts in
the east,” said Herz. “We
may not be as well-known
as some of the other
resorts near D.C.,” he
explained. “But with the
expanded Corridor H highway, we are now effectively
an hour closer to DC.”

As Corridor H attracts
more visitors and Timberline continues to serve its
longstanding loyal customers, the resort is expanding
its capacity. More gladed
skiing areas are opening, a
tubing park is planned, the
lodge is being upgraded,
and state-of-the-art energy
and water efficient snow
guns are being added. To
help make this happen,
Herz turned to Destination
Crowd Capital’s snowfunding campaigning (http://
www.snowfunding.com)
– crowdfunding in support of the sustainability
and improvements of the
resort.
Scott Wayne, co-founder
of Destination Crowd
Capital, said, “Timberline
is a special place.“
“With its incredible
natural and man-made
snow, impressive ski runs,
and a strong sustainability
story that connects it to
communities throughout
the region, Timberline is
an ideal destination for
the launch of the world’s
first snowfunding.com
campaign,” Wayne said.

The region’s serious
skiers have long rated
Timberline as a premier
destination. It was voted
by the Mountain News
Corporation’s OnTheSnow website as having the
best down-hill terrain in
the Mid-Atlantic, and Blue
Ridge Outdoors Magazine’s readers voted Salamander Run as the best
ski run in the Blue Ridge.
Timberline also has
a strong sustainability
story:The resort directly
generates over 500 jobs
– 10 percent of all winter
jobs in West Virginia;
The resort buys supplies
from over 100 businesses,
many of which are in the
region;
The resort provides
substantially discounted
prices for local residents,
veterans, first responders,
youth and other groups;
Through partnerships
with organizations such as
the Scouts, thousands of
youth become life-long ski
enthusiasts;
Surrounded on all sides
by national and state
park land, Timberline has

been helping to ensure
that these areas remain
protected by being one of
the region’s largest land
contributors (approximately 1,000 acres) to the
Canaan Valley National
Wildlife Refuge.

Visiting Athens shot 50 percent
from the field and never trailed
Monday night during a 68-27
victory over the Meigs girls basketball team in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division contest at
Larry R. Morrison Gymnasium
in Meigs County.
The host Lady Marauders
(6-12, 1-9 TVC Ohio) dropped
their fifth consecutive decision
and were never closer than four
points at any point in the game,
as the Lady Bulldogs (13-4, 7-1)
jumped out to a 7-0 lead less
than three minutes in and never

cracked the scoring column after
Madison Hendricks hit a trifecta
at the 4:39 mark, making it a
7-3 contest. AHS followed with
14 consecutive points over the
next 2:28 for a 21-3 edge and
ultimately ended the first quarter
with a comfortable 22-6 advantage.
Athens missed its first seven
shots of the second canto, but
the guests still made a 13-0 run
over the opening 5:43 to claim
its biggest lead of the first half
at 35-6 with 2:17 remaining.
The Maroon and Gold, however,
closed the final 2:05 with a 7-2
spurt to close to within 37-13 at
the break.
The Green and Gold dominated the first half, connecting
on 16-of-34 shot attempts overall
while outrebounding Meigs by a

sizable 22-7 advantage — which
included a 12-1 edge on the
offensive glass.
Meigs, on the other hand, netted just 4-of-16 shot attempts in
the first half while committing
15 turnovers — compared to
only 10 miscues by the guests.
The Lady Marauders pulled to
within 21 points on three separate occasions in the third canto,
the last of which came at the
4:46 mark at 43-22. Athens, however, closed the period with a 7-2
run to win the quarter by a 13-11
margin — giving the guests a
50-24 lead headed into the finale.

WATERFORD,
Ohio — A 15-2 second
quarter run ultimately
allowed host Waterford to secure enough
breathing room Monday night to claim a
49-31 victory over the
Eastern girls basketball
team in a Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking
Division matchup in
Washington County.
The visiting Lady
Eagles (13-6, 10-3 TVC
Hocking) battled out to
a 12-11 edge after eight
minutes of play, but the
Lady Wildcats (17-1,
13-0) followed with
their big charge of the
night — which allowed
the hosts to turn a
one-point deficit into
a commanding 26-14
advantage at the break.
EHS — which had
a five-game winning
streak snapped — rallied with a small 9-5
run to close to within
31-23 headed into the
finale, but Waterford
answered with an 18-8
run to end regulation and wrap up the
18-point outcome.
WHS also claimed
a season sweep of the
Lady Eagles after posting a 55-37 victory in
Tuppers Plains back on
December 18, 2014.
Eastern connected
on 14-of-48 field goal
attempts for 29 percent,

including a 1-of-9 effort
from three-point range
for 11 percent. The
guests also committed
24 turnovers in the setback, compared to 13
miscues by WHS.
Hannah Barringer led
the Lady Eagles with
12 points and seven
rebounds, followed by
Laura Pullins with nine
points and Madison
Williams with six markers. Hannah Bailey
and Elizabeth Collins
rounded out the scoring
with two points apiece
for EHS, which went
2-of-4 at the free throw
line for 50 percent.
The Lady Cats sank
17-of-47 shot attempts
for 36 percent, including a 4-of-13 effort from
behind the arc for 31
percent. Both teams
had 25 rebounds apiece
in the contest.
Dani Drayer paced
Waterford with a gamehigh 16 points, followed
by Alli Kern with 14
points and Regan Porter with 10 markers.
Mariah Starkey was
next with five points,
while Taylor Hilverding

was 11-of-16 at the
charity stripe for 69
percent.

Trimble by a 63-32 count.
The Lady Tomcats (6-13, 5-9
