"'Did Somebody Whistle for Me?"

Thanksgiving 1965
THibi\:;GIVING , which we celebrate
tomorrow, is with July the 4th, lhe
most American of :1\'1 our hotidays.

What a contrast between the observance of that first Thanksgiving and the
one of the current year:
This year we are in a country with

the greatest material prosperity tha~ we
have experienced in all _the years smce
the Pilgrims bowed their heads and
feasted back in 1620. What they ate and
gave thanks for in th(lt day would be
considered rough fare today.
By the standards that we set today,
thev would be classed among the lmpo\~erished.

surrvive in a bleak t'Ommuroty.
Millions of families will sit down to
1 bountiful feast , and the chan~es are
that in many instances they ~Jll eat
themselves into a stupor, knowmg well
that there are people in our land who
will have a meager fare, yet wtll be
thankful that they are alive, and in good
health, tho greatest blessing of all.

We have become P"haps a weok
people, who, havtng tasted nothing but
the hom of plenty, our characters are
not as staunch and all powerful as we
onre were labeled.

Our paths today are made easy. With
litue effort, we provide ourselves with
luxudes beyond the imagination of
those who came to that rock-bound coast
in the 171h century. The abundance that
we have today is not enough. The real
strength of people lies in the attitud£>s
anrl qualities possessed by those who
rf'lrhr<ltt-d the first Thanksgiving .
They held independence, and above
al\ a stro ng sense of indvidual respons ~ hilitv . which is lacking in the makeup
of m.inv ol" this century. We need to reca pture" some of that independence to
\";Jre the world as strong personalities.
We have become selfish to a great
degree, and are not willing to evidence
a l'oncern for those who are less fortunate . We are drunk with the power that
our material wealth prorvides, and we
fea r we have not developed enough character to live up to high -minded traits of
our ancestors.
Thanksgiving '' a season of deep
spiritual belief. ~his i< something that
most of us do not feel on such an important date. The jpiritual significance is
all but submerged, not only on the day
1et asirle for the obsenance, but in every other day of the year.
Thanksgiving should be a part of all
of the days of the year. We should nev·
er cease being thankful that we have
a sound mind. a healthy body, and a
concern for the freedom of all peoples.
Maybe someday we ran have a worldwide day of Thanksgiving when we arP
all living in peace, and the dignily of
man ts recognized in every curn~r of
the globe~ . ,
