War Takes Back Seat
'}'HE shortening days of the winter
· season are bringing with it one of

the most dangerous periods of traffic on
the highways. The hazards increase with
the coming of slick and ky ro~dways,
and visibility, or rather lack of 1t can
be a maJOr contrilruting cause of death
on the highways. The holiday season that
we are now entering is still another fac·

tor that all drivers should take into con·
sideration when they venture on the
highway. In the hustle and bustle of preparing for the hohday we fmd that some
people get carried away, and allow their
attention to \louder. Today many are de·
ploring the loss of life and the injury
that is coming to our fighting forces.
These same people who lament this car-

nage never stop to realize that it is goinJ
on right in their own backyard.

There is a rar worse killer and maim·
er loose than war and we see very few
getting concerned'. ln the period from
1900 to 1964 there were over a half mil·
lion Amerkans killed in war, with em ad·
ditional 978 000 wounded. During that

same period' there we~e over_ a milli~n
and a half persons kllled m trafhc
;wd over 52 million injured, and
many made cripples for life. The pr~s
pE"cts, and they are gloom~ ones tor
1965. will see over 50,000 killed, and the
injured ranks rising to almost the two
million mark. Some of those who form
those ~tatistics might be you or your lovt>fl ones. The boys m Viet Nam are safer
than those who venture on the highways

aml streets of Arnericn.

get tollgher: more drivers will lose th~ir

;md communities will spend more mon·
ey to correct hazards. \Ve wonder how
nluch of this will transpire, with the

present apathy that exists.

We can do all of this, and the problem will still not be solved because the
reason for the toll in injury and death
is due to "improper driving", and is the
human element They claim that 90 per
cent of accidents are caused by impro-per driving, and drinking is a factor in
eight percent more. We can see by this
that the driver. and not the car and the
road is at fault By this we see that the
only solution is stricter enforcement of
the laws to get the irresyonsibl~. which
includes the speeder of the highways
and keep them off. Some say that driver education will help, but our observa·
tion Is that the most highly skllled driv·
