IN

THF. next few weeks we will see the
start of the coun'~v fair season in
Ohio. Our J•ck•on co\lnty neighbors gel
th• jump on all of the other 87 counties
h' holding the first expoSi tion and our
011 n Mei gs count y expositiOJl will follow
t· loso on its heels. the third week In Aug·
ust We wonder sometimes if thP people
1'ho lake in the fa irs slop to realize the
erforts 1hat have gone into the rearinf of
livestock on display . and at the same t me
think of the many problems of thP !arm·
ing community . They are varied and many . as any thinking person knows. Today
we would like to call your attention to a
phase of the farttling industry that Ia not
getting the full attention that it should,
safety This week is National Farm Safe·
ty week. and we can not resist tbe temptation to stress its Importance. The
theme of the week is "Safer American
Families Everywhere."
The early days of farming were not
entirely accident free. but today with the
wtde mechanization of the farms and the
Introduction of electricity, plus the establishment of farm ponds we see dang·
er lurking in every corner. A great many
sieps have been taken to assure the safety of farm families . All types of organi·
zations have taken up the task, but In
spite of the efforts there are still thou~
ands of 'deaths and nearly a million dis·
abling injuries to farm people each year.
We do not know what the accident rate
is for Meigs eounty farms, but our guess
would be that it is not the hl~heat in the
state. This past spring and up to now In

record has not been achieved without
the cooperation and studied practice of
safety measures.
The nation 's death toll of farm ace!·
dents 11 reported at 8, 700 a year. There
were 800.000 who were injured in &Jrl·
culture pursuits. The dollar cost of those
accidents and deaths Is set at a btllion
and a half dollars. Farm persona who are
laid up due to accidenta buy leas machln·
ery, consumer goods and farm suppUea.
,Their income Is a loso to the busineu of
the community and the nation. During
the observance of the safety week the
Idea Is being •tressed that accidents don't
just happen The human element playa a
large part In the total picture.
of
the big dangers are from the use of pe•
tlcides and tractors.
Neither is dangerous If ptoperly us·
ed. They are basically safe, and It II on·
ly when they are not uaed or operated
successfully thai we have accidents. Th'1
can all be reduced If we realize that
there Is danger in any carelesa actiona.
The accidenl, on the fann can be Ukened to the ones on hlghwaya. , Many feel
that if they get out on A country road instead of a main artery of traffic they will
be safe. The same Ia the attitude on many farms. Such is not the case and dan·
ger lurks there as in the centers of population if safety rules are not obeyed.
Soon it1wlll be harveot season and a
whole new host of dangers wlll appear.
The FFA boys have dono a good Job of
preaching safety and they have their
work cut out to warn about cornpkker•.
