Racllmaniiloff made no bones about the

Once in Minneapolis his check <lid not ar·
rive on the day of hfs concert, and he
flatly refused to play. One bour before
the performance the symphony's board
of <lirectors passed the hat so ihe show
could go on. I wonder what would have
happened if I had taken this attitude dur
ing my two tours of the Soviet Union?
Times change, but I think people remain the same, and because of this I
have bad many unfo~ble moments .
i1t faraway places. In Tiblioi, R1111sia's

out weeks in advance, and many students
who coutdn't get tickets climbed trees
around the open·air pavilion and applauded each piece loudly from the treetops;"
The Russians also love to glve you
presents after a performanee. After a recital in tenl!lgrad\ a small" boy came to
the edge of the stage ancf haaded' me a
bit of tinfoil.
Inside was a tiny piece of chorolate,
which was then scarce m the Soviet Un·
