1

round It In September, and through to I h e
day of election, but will it be delivered In the
brl&ht and fancy package after the man who
.mak.ea it eeta in offic.! That 1a Ute question
that everyone is asking or ahould be. We use
the term often given to the workers of magic,
beeau9e they have perfected their act to

the

point that they have most people looking on
ooe dln!ction, while they are playing
1b e
1ame, and there Ill a •Iron& chance that you
are lain~ to be fooled. One of the clearest
examples Ill the way they are playini around
with ooclal ...,.rlty.
They are talklng about raioes In !Is benefits,
and aloo looting lo that fund to tack the medl-

care piaD mto lo onler to fulfill their promise
to br!n( aweetness and light to every living
soul. Moat people fBll to think of how the Increased rates will affect them especially those
in the lower income bracket. Some have plainly stated that If the new rates go through they
wipe out all of the SCH:alled gains Ulat were
made by that cut in federal income taxes. Ev·
en before they thought up ail of the new ideas,
just in time fGr election, the social aecurlty
rates were already scheduled to go up 32 per
cent in the next seven years. If the proposals
now In the mill go through the rate will go up
49 per cent during that seven year period and
every worker will see a big hole in his take
home pay. Some people just do not seem to
realize that every time tbe government pre.
tends they are giving you somethlng for nothing you are paying for it.
Another thing that Is disturbing In current
ICerJO Ia in the field of agriculture. For exam-

pie the current wheat program. O!UICted lbb
year In spite of the overwheimlol disapproval
of producers In the 1.963 referendum, Ia a downright failure . Those W88blqtoo uperto claimed it would raise the !ann Income. The fact' of
the matter is that Jt bad the reverse effect.
Farm leaders are telling the president t h e
market prices have been depressed, and the
sale of CCC wheat otocka Ill depressing the
market still further. Tbls affects not only the
wheal farmer and bJs income but It hits us all
in the increase of flour and bread prices. Only
about one thin! o1 the almost two million are
participating io the prol"&m, but the reo! who
refused to go along are being peoallu>d, What
are they going to do about the situation with
farmers ready to llarl lbelr 1.963 crops? WW
Lyndon and Huber! go into a huddle with 0..
ville and admit failure and eome up with aoother equally screwy program?
Yet a third lh1ng Ill lakinl place while they
have 1111 looklog lo the wrong direction. They
are setting up grand progratDJ for retralollli
youth from 18 to 21 to make them eligible for
jobs. Wllo Ill going to do that training? We can
not find enough teachers to mao the pubUc
schools. One Industry· hao come forward with
the idea lor a masalve skill buliding program.
They can not train youth In what Ill similar to
the CCC camps of depression years. It
wao
easy to teach a boy bow to plant a seedling.
An industry has most will a g r e e,
t he
prime responslb!Uty for organizing and directIng training programs aa Industry
managers, are In the belli position to know
what skills are required, and what training Ill
necessary to build them. It is the only way to
match up skllio with the needs of indualry and
the government training program whlle promIsing everything will be a colossal fiasco.

BY TONY BENNE'M'
ROSEMARY CLOONEY AND I had a fine
time tuning in some fond recollections the other night at a cocktail blowout in Hollywood.
Our gab took us back nearly 15 years. I got
my first break ir TV in 1950 and so did Rosey.
Hers was slightly better. We were both contestants on the same Arthur Godfrey "Talent
Scouts.. program and I came ln second. Who
beat me out? Rosemary Clooney, one of the
•wellest girls il" the business. But Wt' ended

up sharing a prize catch. Jan Murray happen·
ed to be watching "Talent Scouts" that rught
and hired both of UJ as regulars on his own
TV series, "Songs For Sale." 'The till<!
of
Jan's old show is the story of my ltfe, more
or less. Fifteen yean have passed and

.
Great melodies and great lyrics are eaSily
the most wonderful things in the entertainment
world, for they blend Jnto a fuel that runs ev·
ery motor and Wts every medium in show
~neSB. Trends1 Forget about 'em.
Trends
come 11nd go more often than bad weather.
Beautiful songs will always win out. They're
here to stay. And for staying power, a singer
not only needs beautiful songs but the instinct
to aense one when it comes his way. A hit tune
always tells a good story. It can be a llappy
atory or a sad one, a funny story and sometimes even a ridiculous one, but It must have
that quality called Good. There's usually
a
aood story behind each hit, too.
FOR EXAMPLE, TAKE "I Left My Heart
In Sao Francisco." 'That song unexpectedly
entered my life in February of 1962. I was about to open at tlM! Fairmont Hotel in 'Frisco
and was aet wtth a carefully prepared act. At
a rehearsal the very day of the opening, my
mualcal director and pianio~ Ralph Sharon,
banded me a tune he'd just found, one he felt
wu particularly aood lor local appeal.
After one run through, I instinctively felt
It would appeal to more than just 'Frisco fans.
"San Froncisco" became the blg hit of my
Fairmont engagement and I couldn't walt to
record II. 'The executives behind the big desks
at Columbia'• main offices In New York didn't
qree.
They lao! out to my Instinct, however, and
I recorded. it pronto. Last year "San Francisco ilfted me with I Grammy awards and the

Time

latest count had It passing lhe 3.000,000 mark
in sales. Even the boys at Columbia have to
admit that ain't exactly chopped liver.
"1 Wanna Be Around~' was my follow • up
to "San Francisco,'' and the slory behind this
song sounds a11 U It wall authored by some
"Ma and Pa Kettle" ocripler In Hollywood
only it's 100 per cent non-fiction_
The star of the "1 Wanna" saga is one Sadie
Vimmerstedt, a 83-year-old grandmother who
runs the perfume department lo a big Cincinnati store. About two years ago she thought
up a title she was sure would inspire a good
song: "I Wanna Be Around To Pick Up T be
Pieces When Somebody Break! Your Heart."
· On a wblm, Sadie put that Ulle in a brief
letter and mailed it to Jolumy Mercer, whom
she didn't know from Adam and vice--versa.
Sadie got nary a reply for more than a year
and ~~IJI'ed either Mr. Mercer never received
her missive or had junked it.
But out of llie blue, Sadie got a reply from
Johnny. He'd writlen a song using her liUe,
and she was to be his equal partner for all
royalties to come. The day Johnny gave me
"l Wanna Be Around'' was a happy day for
the three of us. I'm happiest over the way It
bas rewarded Sadie Vimm~rstedt. So far, this
gracious Ohio Grandma has banked some.
thing like $60,1100 from the song.
EVER THINK A SINGER gets a hlt
tune
from his next door neighbor? I did and II was
a beaut titled "Lillie Boy." A chap who bas
the house down the road from mine in Englewood, N. J .• came visiting one day and just
handed it to me. "Lillie Boy" grew into a big
success for me, so alway• be nice to
your
neighbors - they're liable to come
across
with more than just a cup Df sugar. Now I
hope you don't mind my removing the Rora·

disclose that my nice neighbor in Englewood
Isn't some baker or candlestick • maker wlttt

excellent composer by profession.
Bob Hope never wrote or dug up a song for
me but he did give me a title years ago which
I've never changed and never Intend to. Short·
ly after my World War n hitch, I was booked
into the long-gone Nut Club In Greenwlcb Vll·
!age, lhanka to that great star, Pearl Bailey,
who was headlinlog there. Pearl beard

Today's .lJiedical Report
By Wayoe G. Brandstadt, M.D.
Many dramatlc stories have
been written about aphasia. In
these tales usually the victim,
after a blow on the bead incurred while he lJ away from borne,
retains bls ability to speak and
perform all the acts he custom·
arily performs but has no memory for anythinl that happened
to him before his accident.
Fortunately, such casea are
rare but every year in
this
country nearly half a million
persons suffer a stroke, head
injury, or brain disease t h a I
leaves them witb some sort of
language difficulty.
The manifestations vary wide·
ly bul roughly they !ali into
four groups. The victim may
understand what is said to him
but be unable to speak. T h i s
is very common.

He may be able to speak but
be unable to understand any·

thing that is said to him.
Other victims can talk and
understand speech but
have
lost the power to
Interpret
written Language and
the
fourth group cao read but are
unable to write - even to sign
their name.

Because comtnunlcatlon Is so
lmportaat Ia a bomo, any Interference with It cal be frustratIng to bolb the vicllm and bit
family. The family must, therefore, eserci11e tbe atmost pa-tience and undentaodlng. T b e
victim thould not be excluded
from normal aocial contacts
hut should be encouraged to
make blmoeH understood In 101
way he can.

,

Above all, don't treat him
as a child and don't discuss
bls problems lo front of him.
Treat blm as nearly as possible
the way you did before the iccldent.
While it Is unwllle to fill
bim with false hopes of a speedy recovery you should show
genuine pleasure in any real
progress he makes and show
that you understand how hard
he io trying to communicate
with you. II Ill useleso to teD

a rel,axed atmosphere that will
help to ease his tension a n d
frustration.
Ask him olmple
questions
that can be answered ye!l or

''Are you thJrsty?"' "Do you
