WE

We Must Fight For Our Lives
ARE anxiously awaiting the out·
come of the special session of the

Ohio legislature, whose principle pur·
pose c being called together IS tor the
purpose of redlatrictlng the state to con·
form to tho mandate of the United
States Supreme Court, which in one·
year's time reversed Itself from a post·
tton of hands off to positive action. Our
country wu founded by people seeking
freedom, and above all Sl!<!king a right to
have a voice in government. There .are
some who are convinced that there ts a
great inequality in the representation
due to the fact that no matter how .sm~ll
a county is in Ohio it has had • votce m
the ahaplng of stale Jaws. Ohio seem.ed
to be gettfng along in fine shape wttb
our type of representation. The large
counties were given more representa·
lion aecordln& to population, and t~e on·
Jy strength that small counties had m the
legislature was by sticking together to
1et at least their fair share.
Our voice Is being taken away fr~m
us because we are small. The heaVlly
populated areas will now h~ve the entire
say. They were not satlsfted wtth part
of the say, but they want the whole hog.
If such a situation comes to pass it

Will

be up to the small counties of the state
to band together and by constant pres·
sure demand a fair shake for all. A smg·
le citizen In the smallest subdtvtSion of
the state Is Important to the state as .a
whole and if one section of the state ts
allow~d to languish the state as a whole
"'ill su,!fer from the neg\erted segmPnt.
There is an attitude that the large cen~

ters of population know all of the ans·
wers. but yet we find on the honzon a
lack of problem oolvms to a great de·

gree even in the urban centers. The last

terest will do any better job. There is ev·

idence that we of the sparsely populated
areas will have to speak up in a Louder
voice than ever. Under the nPw reappor·

tionment it looks like we will have to
combine on the average of abou! three
If it takes over 60.000 population per
represPntative it will mean ~hat Gallia,

Meigs and Vinton would 1ust about
make a representatlve district.
We will have to admit that for some
time we have felt that there should be a
combination of counties over the pre~
ent 88. A county with 20.000 or less IS
a rather wasteful form of g_o~ernment..

Each has a set of county offtctals, and
possibly for more efficiency t~ey could
have been eliminated a long lime ago .
Vinton county was among the last to be
formed in this section of the state, and
it came into being by being enabled to
take a part of Gallia county, Jackson
county, Athens county and Hocking to
form the subdivision. We have a precedent for forming a county and ~· see
no reason for the reverse not bet'!g ~··
sible. We live in a day of centraiJZatiOn
of government. which some feel Is bel·

controlled so that no visiting firemen
can see anything the Chinese CommunIsts don't want them to see. But if you
hold a U. S. passport, don't rush to your
nearest travel agency; our government,
Uke Franco's Spain, forbids its citizens
to enter Red China.
Sean Connery, currently filming
"The Hill" in London, probably will be
put to the trouble of denying rift rumors
-because the on-the-set gossips are say·
ing his wife, beautiful Diane Cilento,
hasn't been paying enough risits to the

an actress, considers it professional cour-

tesy not to hang around the studio when
her husband is toiling, but that's not the
way other members of the cast are inter·
preting It . .. Night club owners are ask·

but customers are so scarce these days
