The most glowing reports or what Russia lS

daing or placs to do in the field of electric
power production come from those who favor
socialization of the U. S utility industry RusSia 's achievements, whether rea] or exaggerated , are thus employed in an effort to destray taxpaying private enterprise here, and
replace 1t with tax-eating monolithic govern-

ievements of our own private power industry,
which dwarf those of Russia by a huge margin, are l>elitt1ed or ignored.

At least 30me part of the wea)mess of the position of the
Jews in Ute ancient world, is tracea ble to the fact that they
were' divided among themselves, and that condition has existed
in almost every century since that time . There is no telling
what the Jews might have achieved in this world ii they had
all been able to work together .
In Jesus' d~y Jhere were two great political parties among
therp - the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Only on the rarest
of occasions did they ever work together. Neither group could
trust the other.
Tho fharuees
One gets the impression from reading the Four Gospels of
the· New Testament that Jesus was almost constantly in trouble with the Pha<isees. That is probably an exaggeration of
the situation, but the early Christians believed it to be true.
The Pharisees were the party of the common people. They
were for the most part, extremely religious men who were devoted to the cause of the masses and to the preservaUon of
the ancient rites and ceremonies.
•
The Sa4dueees
The Sadducees, on the other hand, were the minority party
who had contrived to get po~ssion of the political and econo. mic power of' the nation, and in large measure they dictated
the living coqilitions of the common people. Actually, there
were no more than about 3,0PO of them out of a total Palestinian population of perhaps 350,000 people. In all the wo~ld
there was not one Sadducee outside the city of Jerusalem.
They were the bankers and money lenders. In addilion,
they were in control of the Temple system, including its reve·
noes. By controlling the Sanhedrin, which was the lega.Jiy constituted civU authority of tJJ,e - nation 1 they could dictate to
every Jew in the Roman world.
Paul'• Strategy
The Apostle Paul, having become involved in a street brawl
which developed into a riot, was called first before the Sanhedrin for trial. There he did a rather clever thing which. upon closer examination, appears just a little shabby.
Knowing the bitterneSs that existed between the two parties - Pharisees and Sadducees - he contrived ID make it
appear thai ))e had been ..-rested because he had been defending the position of the Pharisees, and immediately the meeting broke out in an uproar. As someone has said, "He broke
up the meeting by breaking it in two."
