‘Pride’
spotlights
professionals
Staff Report

Today’s edition of the newspaper represents
the largest single issue planned for this year.
Community Pride has become an annual publication that focuses on many of the changes
that have taken place in our communities during the last year.
This special edition also provides an opportunity to take a closer look at who we are. This
year’s edition has a special theme, “A Day in
the Life of …” and we’re spotlighting 20 professionals, many of whom we come in contact
with every day. These individuals were kind
enough to give our news team time out of their
busy schedules so we could all learn a little bit
more about their job, who they are and how
they interact with our community and, in some
cases, the world beyond.
A special thank you goes out to these folks
for allowing us to share their stories. Because
they’ve allowed us this time, we can all better
understand and appreciate what it means to
“walk a mile in my shoes.”
Among other news in today’s edition, you
will learn about what it’s like to be a river boat
pilot, gain a bit more knowledge about your
family physician, spend the day with a school
cook, an EMS worker (among other jobs), a
librarian and a mail carrier. Those are just
some of the professions you can read about in
today’s newspaper. They are part of who we are
and represent some of the reasons we’re proud
to live along the river.
A big thank you also goes to those advertisers who partnered with us to bring you
this special edition today. Without them, we
wouldn’t have been able to tell the stories.
Enjoy!

Budget director
defends plan
COLUMBUS (AP) — The state’s budget director
on Wednesday criticized a budget bill passed by the
House for guaranteeing that no school district loses
money even when it experiences declines in enrollment and other marked changes.
In testimony to a Senate Finance subcommittee,
budget director Tim Keen pushed for restoration of
school-funding formula changes proposed in Republican Gov. John Kasich’s version of the two-year, $71.5
billion spending blueprint.
Keen said Kasich’s changes “further target resources
efficiently and effectively to those districts with the least
capacity to fund an appropriate educational program.”
The Republican-dominated House adjusted the
ever-debated formula after pushback from education
officials, teachers and families over cuts it delivered
to more than half of Ohio’s public districts. Keen said
the House budget also directs money to many rural
districts regardless of capacity.
The House added about $270 million to the governor’s proposed school foundation funding.

$2,500 to lighting project
MIDDLEPORT — Peoples Bancorp
Foundation, a non-profit corporation
formed to make donations in Peoples Bank
market areas, awarded $2,500 to the Village
of Middleport for the installation of lights
along the town’s multi-use walking track.
“We welcome the opportunity to help
improve the communities we’re part of,”
said Scott Walker, vice president-regional
manager. “Good lighting is needed along
the walking trail and we are thrilled to support the project.”

Peoples Bancorp Foundation contributions focus on charitable giving in
four major areas: community investment and economic development,
youth and education, human services
programs that improve the social needs
of low- to moderate-income communities and individuals, and the arts
and cultures. Organizations receiving
grants meet those requirements and
serve the markets where Peoples Bank
currently has office locations.

An area Holzer Orthopaedic patient shares her story
GALLIPOLIS — “I feel perfect,”
stated Linda Milliron, recent Holzer orthopedic patient. “And it’s all
due to Dr. Konstantakos.”
In February, Milliron fell on ice
and cracked her hip. Not knowing the severity of her injury, she
arranged to go to Urgent Care at a
later time.
“I had slight pain, but it wasn’t
unbearable,” she said.

The next day, Milliron picked
up her dog and felt her hip break.
Linda was able to return to the
house and EMS transferred her to
Holzer Urgent Care, where an X-ray
showed the break. The next day, a
hip replacement was performed at
the Gallipolis medical center campus and now, “I have no pain,” she
shared.
“I healed so quickly, all due to
him. I recommend Dr. Konstantakos to everyone. He’s amazing.”

OUR VIEW

‘35’ is the
magic number
The number “35” was tossed around quite a
bit at Tuesday night’s 69th annual Mason County
Area Chamber of Commerce Spring Dinner.
West Virginia’s 35th governor, Earl Ray Tomblin, was the keynote speaker. Before his remarks,
he mentioned that West Virginia was the 35th
state admitted to the Union (on June 20, 1863).
Mason County Commission President Rick
Handley, who introduced Gov. Tomblin at Tuesday
night’s dinner, said his email address contains
“35.” He added that his high school basketball jersey was also No. 35.
The governor and his wife, have been married –
you guessed it – 35 years.
But the “35” that everyone in attendance Tuesday night — at Trinity United Methodist Church’s
Community Building — was waiting to hear about
was the completion of the U.S. 35 project.
In true form for saving the best for last, Gov.
Tomblin briefly talked about the project. The
initial mention of it brought about a standing ovation.
The project involves expanding the remaining
14.6 miles of two-lane highway to four lanes. Currently, U.S. 35 is four lanes from the Interstate 64
junction at Scott Depot to about Fraziers Bottom.
It then turns into a two-lane road for the next 14.6
miles until about five miles north of Southside,
where it returns to four lanes to the West VirginiaOhio border and well on to about Dayton, Ohio.
The road runs from Michigan to Florida and is
four-lanes, except through the 14.6.mile stretch
through Mason and Putnam counties.
The presence of Paul Mattox, West Virginia’s
secretary of highways, at the chamber dinner
almost assured those in attendance that the U.S.
35 project would be mentioned.
“Once completed, it will make a difference in
the lives of so many people in Mason County,”
Tomblin told the crowd Tuesday night.
We agree. It not only will benefit Mason County,
but the entire Ohio Valley. It will improve our
infrastructure, attract new business and industry,
and provide an upgraded thoroughfare by which to
transport goods and services. The governor said
the entire project should be completed by 2019.
First and foremost, expansion of that 14.6-mile
stretch will also greatly improve safety. According
to statistics that Del. Jim Butler obtained from
the West Virginia Department of Highways concerning accidents, injuries and fatalities on that
stretch of two-lane road, there were 200 crashes,
45 injuries and one death between January 2009
and March 2014.
Those numbers don’t include the two fatalities
in April 2014 and June 2014 – both in the Southside area, and a crash last August that involved
a school bus and two semi-tractor trailers near
Cornstalk Road.

Michael Johnson, editor

The remaining stretch of two-lane road must be expanded for the
aforementioned reasons. It was good to hear that Gov. Tomblin and
Mattox have made it one of the state’s highest priorities.

of campaign spending on behalf of
candidates and incumbents before
an election so that voters know

after elections is meaningless.
Since it appears unlikely that
Congress will soon step up to
the plate, it may be that regulatory commissions — the FEC,
IRS, FCC — will have to move
on stricter disclosure definitions
and rules. The White House could
even consider an executive order
requiring full disclosure of political
spending by all companies with
federal contracts.
The second major reform is to
make public funds available for
financing campaigns, thus amplifying the contributions of ordinary
Americans, freeing candidates to
spend more time on substance
rather than fundraising, and letting them engage more fully with
voters rather than donors. In
states that have used it, public
money works.
The odds of action are not encouraging. Yet I’m heartened by something Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham told reporters in New Hampshire the other day. “You’re going to
have money dumped in this election
cycle that’s going to turn off the
American people,” he said. “There’s
going to be a need and a movement
to try to control the money in politics.” Let’s hope he’s right.

and hopefully moving
on to toes.
The Meigs softball
team picked up its 10th
straight victory Tuesday night during a 9-1
victory over host Parkersburg South in a nonconference matchup in
Wood County.
The Lady Marauders
(12-2) led wire to wire
in the five-inning affair,
which ended by mercy
rule due West Virginia
guidelines. MHS also
picked up its eighth

ninth triumph by eight
more or more runs this
spring.
Devyn Oliver led the
game off with a double
and later scored on a
Brook Andrus single,
making it 1-0 after one
inning of play. Oliver
and Andrus both produced RBI singles in
the second that plated
Morgan Lodwick and
Katie Gilkey for a 3-0
edge after two complete.
The Lady Marauders
followed by sending 11
batters to the plate in
the fifth, which yielded
six runs on seven hits

and an error — making
it a 9-0 contest midway
through five.
Hathaway delivered
the Lady Patriots’ only
run with a one-out
homer in the bottom
half of the fifth, which
ultimately wrapped up
the scoring.
Meigs outhit the
hosts by a sizable 15-2
overall margin and
committed three of the
four errors in the game.
Destinee Blackwell was
the winning pitcher of
record after allowing
one earned run, two

two safeties apiece.
Blackwell, Gilkey, Danielle Morris and Bre Colburn also had a hit each
for the victors.
Oliver and Fox also
drove in two RBIs
apiece, while Oliver,
Lodwick and Gilkey
each crossed home
plate twice. Meigs did
not have a single batter strike out in the
triumph.

TUPPERS PLAINS, Ohio — Too many mistakes.
The Eastern baseball team committed six of nine
errors in the contest Tuesday night while dropping a
14-2 decision to visiting Marietta in a non-conference
matchup in Meigs County.
The Eagles (8-4) rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit
by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, which
ultimately allowed the hosts to knot things up at two
through four complete.
Christian Speelman started the rally by reaching
safely on an error, then later scored on a double by Jesse
Morris. Morris later came around to the plate after
another error allowed EHS to make it a two-all contest.
The Tigers, however, responded by sending 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, which resulted in seven
runs on four hits, four walks and a hit batter. The end
result gave MHS a permanent advantage at 9-2 midway
through five.
The Eagles mustered only one hit and four baserunners over the next three frames, and ultimately left runners stranded at the corners in the bottom of the seventh. Marietta tacked on an insurance run in the sixth
and plated four more scores in the seventh to wrap up
the 12-run decision.
