After Yoo, Telephone Hogs

)

.

Over the past weekend an unhappy loco! telephone sub·
SCriber learned from a distant relative that the relative llad
tried to telephone an importont message onto the Pomeroy
Exchange gossip network . The folks trying to call here poled
all day, found the "line busy" the entire time. Wl)lle llQt able
-to classify their message as an emergency , it was important
enough to cause considerable disgust at failing to get through.
It has been recently verified , too, that a person In one of'
tbe small surrounding towns near Pomeroy-Middleport makes
a practice during the day of using the phone frequently for
long periods of time and leaving the receiver off the boo¥ between calls. This so tl>nt she won't be held up even a minute
when she Is ready for her next call. In this ~ase It ·has been
reported telephone company trouble shooters have ·made severai attempts to stop . the receiver-off-the-hook business
but the person who is the subject of this discourse is too
smart for that kind of simple trickery. She watches for them,
rushes back to the phone- if she Isn't already on it herselland oIacessa ld recei ver back on th e h oo k .
"Who, me '"
. apparenUy is t h e response t h e ut iltty men get •
Ytu take it from therE!.
And have you ever received a long distance call and 1\ad
difficulty in hearing your caller? Probably everyone has. The
reason is that everyone else on your party line bas their receivers off the hook listening, or waiting until your call is over
so they can get their request tor a· number in . This is a matter
of simple courtesy one would consider too obvious tor
grown adults to infringe upon.
On numerous occaSJons the editorial staff of this newspaper has laced a p.ress time deadline with only minutes to
spare, and needing some vital link or information to com·
plete a story for page one.
"Tht line Is still busy," says our operator who is every bit
as disgusted as we are, is the sole result of attempt alter attempt to get through to our party. Usually by doin~ Utile elae
than dropping every other duty and concentrating mstead up·
on demanding the number every 60 seconds we finally get
through. But tbc w~ar and tear on nerv es and the mounting
irrltation makea"it ,, questionable matt"r in these m~ments
ju•t in what terms we would jUdge th e human race.
What I• the answer to this mounting problem? We don't
profess to know . Something wlll have to be done before it becomes any worse, Or continues as it is mu ch longer. It would
a~ar the telephone company would be vitally interested in
easing the situation, for its own .. public relations" part, If the
utility would take the initiative in impoalng reBtrictions on
intemperate telephone users, it would find the great majority
of its customers solidly behind in support.
And if nothing can be done, beca use of existing laws or
Public Utilities Commission r egulations, we'd like to know
that, too. Then action could be directed to the proper place.

We predict it ~ill not be many years, maybe even months,
before the public gets so exasperated at tel ephone hog,s a
dwlge will he made in the present system which permits •ny
and all to use their Instrument as often and for as long as
1bey please, excepting during emergencies.
This is no new proble-m, rather it is a continuing one. A.ctUlllly, tbere is Utile chance to learn if it is more serious In
-F.ebruary of 1957 than it was In Februar.v of 1956. Or 1950.
But brethern'.,.and sistern', it sure seems to.be worser

After Yoo, Telephone Hogs

)
