· Res/»nse To·Middleport's Shattering W~tqry Was
'/Don't Believe It,' When Told Friday'~ Cjrifl $core . . . . . · .

1.

The·general response to Middleport's shattetiPg victory over Wajtama Friday night
ivaS, "I don't believe 11. Are you sure~"
About the same kind of acceptance was gi·
ven the report last spring that the Yellow
Jackets had won the State Class A baseball
championship.
Meigs County, we are sure, joins Middleport jn t'ejoicing at the snap of a defeatist
string in football fortunes. It was more than
a little embarassing to everybody to have th e
Yellow Jackets who for so long and brillianlly
were a dominating force in a league outmanning them two. three and even four to one in
manpower become little more than a doormat
for whoever happened to be on the Middle·
port schedule.
The boys who played last Ft·iday night,
down to the last scrub out every night taking
his regular bumps, deserve a pat on the back.
So does new bead coach John Thompson who
admittedly accepted the post at Middleport
this fall a little In the dark as to the potential
awaiting him.
While lhe 47-13 victory ovet Wahama was

WSJJ. -TV Obl~~·l

heart warming, .and energtzmg m Itself, let
no one assume now that the Jackets should
proceed at once into the rirst division of the
Southeastern Ohio League. Of course, II is nQI
impossible, but it is very unlikely.
The road back will be long and many frus·
!rations will block it. The highest kind of fortitude and ·perseverance on the part not only 1
uf Mr. Thompson but even more so of his
players wlll 'be necessary before the Yellow
Jackets can go on a grid field each Friday
night during the autumn weeks as a regular
favored team rather than as an underdog.
But this victory after so many defeats is .
bound to have· a beneficial impact upon the 1
team .,In the words of Thompson, "It was just I
what we needed. Proof tha·t we actually could
win a game." ·
I
Again. permit us to extend to Middleport
High School, its superintendent, i\s principal,
Its coach, and its team, the warmest congratulations. May this be the first step toward that
whlc~ should be the goal of every athletic
program: a competitive team that wins every
time ll deserves to win, and loses only when
it meets a better team.

· Res/»nse To·Middleport's Shattering W~tqry Was
'/Don't Believe It,' When Told Friday'~ Cjrifl $core . . . . . · .

1.

The·general response to Middleport's shattetiPg victory over Wajtama Friday night
ivaS, "I don't believe 11. Are you sure~"
About the same kind of acceptance was gi·
ven the report last spring that the Yellow
Jackets had won the State Class A baseball
championship.
Meigs County, we are sure, joins Middleport jn t'ejoicing at the snap of a defeatist
string in football fortunes. It was more than
a little embarassing to everybody to have th e
Yellow Jackets who for so long and brillianlly
were a dominating force in a league outmanning them two. three and even four to one in
manpower become little more than a doormat
for whoever happened to be on the Middle·
port schedule.
The boys who played last Ft·iday night,
down to the last scrub out every night taking
his regular bumps, deserve a pat on the back.
So does new bead coach John Thompson who
admittedly accepted the post at Middleport
this fall a little In the dark as to the potential
awaiting him.
While lhe 47-13 victory ovet Wahama was

WSJJ. -TV Obl~~·l

heart warming, .and energtzmg m Itself, let
no one assume now that the Jackets should
proceed at once into the rirst division of the
Southeastern Ohio League. Of course, II is nQI
impossible, but it is very unlikely.
The road back will be long and many frus·
!rations will block it. The highest kind of fortitude and ·perseverance on the part not only 1
uf Mr. Thompson but even more so of his
players wlll 'be necessary before the Yellow
Jackets can go on a grid field each Friday
night during the autumn weeks as a regular
favored team rather than as an underdog.
But this victory after so many defeats is .
bound to have· a beneficial impact upon the 1
team .,In the words of Thompson, "It was just I
what we needed. Proof tha·t we actually could
win a game." ·
I
Again. permit us to extend to Middleport
High School, its superintendent, i\s principal,
Its coach, and its team, the warmest congratulations. May this be the first step toward that
whlc~ should be the goal of every athletic
program: a competitive team that wins every
time ll deserves to win, and loses only when
it meets a better team.
