Top In Number o#Patient Days For
$tatf'Su~sidies For TBCare Are Paid Out
· Some may be startled to know that patient'
for tuberculosis victims who are respon!f~l!'~llbiiUtilesof tlelis,County increased 441.4 per
in 1956.57 compared to 1950·51. This is
the second highest-hike of any county in Ohio.
Plckaway County has the greatest increase,
5<18.5 per cent. Next behind Meigs is Warren
with 434 .2 per cent.
_These figures were part of a report made
-this week by James A. Rhodes, auditor of
state to the legislature and the Department of
Health on eKpenditure of state funds to assist
counties in their fight against tuberculosis.
Interestingly enough, the report proves
tewer days were spent In hospitals and sana·
~urns by TB patients last year in Ohio generally than in any year since the slate entered
the fight against TB wllh funds in 1947.
, A drop from t pe~k of 1,287, IJ9 patient
days in 1953 to 981,955 patient days was
11iown during the past fiscal year. SummarizJog further, Mr. Rhodes showed subsidy p~yments of $2,219,865 during the year, lowest
amount In 10 years; almost $600,000 less than
the legislature appropriated for 1956·1957 fiJ.
tal year. A total of •386,481.25 in unused
funds was tumed back to the stale treasury
during the year.
Since the stat'e got Into the fight against TB
with dollars In 1947, a total of $26,556,068.78
has been spent in subsidy payments through
I

June 30, 1957.
County by county, the report compares the
number of patient days for which the state
provided subsidy pa·ymerils last year with the
number in 1950·1951 fiscal year. Fifty-two
counties show a decrease In hospitalized TB
patients. Included are all the larger counUes.
Thirty-six counties show an increase, with
Pickaway, Meigs, and Warren reQecting the
biggest jumps.

high recent increase in patient days in the
smaller counties Is little mote than a 8ugges·,
lion that these counties we~e flower Ill promote or require ilse of aectpteG deteCtion
lechnlql!es for TB such as X·r&Y aDd frequent
medical examinations.
Thus, the report Is good because It indi·
cates the public at last is more TB conscious
than before and that the time ma1 not be
very far in the future when TB also wlli be
in decline here.

Top In Number o#Patient Days For
$tatf'Su~sidies For TBCare Are Paid Out
· Some may be startled to know that patient'
for tuberculosis victims who are respon!f~l!'~llbiiUtilesof tlelis,County increased 441.4 per
in 1956.57 compared to 1950·51. This is
the second highest-hike of any county in Ohio.
Plckaway County has the greatest increase,
5<18.5 per cent. Next behind Meigs is Warren
with 434 .2 per cent.
_These figures were part of a report made
-this week by James A. Rhodes, auditor of
state to the legislature and the Department of
Health on eKpenditure of state funds to assist
counties in their fight against tuberculosis.
Interestingly enough, the report proves
tewer days were spent In hospitals and sana·
~urns by TB patients last year in Ohio generally than in any year since the slate entered
the fight against TB wllh funds in 1947.
, A drop from t pe~k of 1,287, IJ9 patient
days in 1953 to 981,955 patient days was
11iown during the past fiscal year. SummarizJog further, Mr. Rhodes showed subsidy p~yments of $2,219,865 during the year, lowest
amount In 10 years; almost $600,000 less than
the legislature appropriated for 1956·1957 fiJ.
tal year. A total of •386,481.25 in unused
funds was tumed back to the stale treasury
during the year.
Since the stat'e got Into the fight against TB
with dollars In 1947, a total of $26,556,068.78
has been spent in subsidy payments through
I

June 30, 1957.
County by county, the report compares the
number of patient days for which the state
provided subsidy pa·ymerils last year with the
number in 1950·1951 fiscal year. Fifty-two
counties show a decrease In hospitalized TB
patients. Included are all the larger counUes.
Thirty-six counties show an increase, with
Pickaway, Meigs, and Warren reQecting the
biggest jumps.

high recent increase in patient days in the
smaller counties Is little mote than a 8ugges·,
lion that these counties we~e flower Ill promote or require ilse of aectpteG deteCtion
lechnlql!es for TB such as X·r&Y aDd frequent
medical examinations.
Thus, the report Is good because It indi·
cates the public at last is more TB conscious
than before and that the time ma1 not be
very far in the future when TB also wlli be
in decline here.

Pickaway County has the greatest increase,
1148.5 per cent. Next behind Meigs is Warren
with 434.2 per cent.
These figures were part of a report made
this week by Jamef A. Rhodes, auditor or
state to the legislature and the Department of
He~~:lth on expenditure of state funds to assist
counties in their fight against tuberculosis.
Intereslingly enough, the report proves
fewer days were spent In hospitals and sana~ums by TB patients last year in Ohio gen·

the fight against TB with funds in 1947.

amount in 10 years; almost $800,000 less th~n

funds was turned back to the state treasury

It seems apparent, In reflection, that the
high recent lncrea£e in patient days in the

'i 'cent In 1956·57 compared to 1950-51. This is
. the second highest hike of any county in Ohio.
Pickaway County has the greatest increase,
1148.5 per cent. Next behind Meigs is Warren
with 434.2 per cent.
These figures were part of a report made
this week by Jamef A. Rhodes, auditor or
state to the legislature and the Department of
He~~:lth on expenditure of state funds to assist
counties in their fight against tuberculosis.
Intereslingly enough, the report proves
fewer days were spent In hospitals and sana~ums by TB patients last year in Ohio gen·
erally than in any year since the slate entered
the fight against TB with funds in 1947.
A drop from t .peak of 1,267,119 patient

llig further, Mr. Rhodes showed subsidy p~y
ments of $2,219,865 during the year, lowest
amount in 10 years; almost $800,000 less th~n
the legislature appropriated fot 1956·1957 ffs.
cal year. A total of $386,481.25 in unused
funds was turned back to the state treasury
during the year.
Since the stafe got Into the fight against TB

provided subsidy pa·ymerits last year With the

patients. lnclutfed are all the larger counties.
Thirty-six counties show an increase, with
Pickaway, Meigs, and Warren rel, lecting the
biggest jumps.

It seems apparent, In reflection, that the
high recent lncrea£e in patient days in the
smaller counties is little more than ~ suggestion that these counties were •lower to promote or require lise or ar.ceptea det~tion
~hnlques for TB such as x-ray and frequent
medical examinations.

TUESDAY

Surely, on a state level, the Rhodes report
Indicates that TB is far toward being whipped.
The larger counties with great cities In them
quite obviously got busy early in the subsidy
program to require food handlers, processors
and public employes of every kind to have TB
x-rays. The resulf was a rapid influx of pa·
tients and efficient reduction of the disease.
