OSHP sees deadly weekend in Ohio Valley
Staff Report

GALLIPOLIS — The Gallipolis post of the Ohio State
Highway Patrol investigated
two motor vehicle crashes
involving fatalities during
the Labor Day Weekend.
The Gallia/Meigs post
investigated a total of four
fatalities in all of 2014, with
one occurring in Gallia
County and three in Meigs
County. This year, the numbers stand at three fatalities
in Gallia County and five
in Meigs County — a 100
percent increase in fatalities
with almost four months left
in the year.
Post commander Lt. Max
Norris said troopers will be
working diligently to reverse
this trend.

The Gallia and Meigs
sheriff’s offices, he said, dedicated increased manpower
to work traffic over the
Labor Day holiday. This was
an effort to combine forces
and have an increased police
presence on local roadways.
“Troopers were scheduled
to have almost 100 percent
of available officers on the
roadways,” he said. “Federal
grant money was used to
fund 91 hours of overtime
for the officers to extend
their patrols.
The patrol made 752
traffic stops, with 438
enforcement contacts and
314 non-enforcement contacts. OSHP also issued
254 warnings, 126 vehicle
defect notices and 73 seat

belt violations, and two
OVIs and two criminal cases
were generated as a result of
traffic stops. A total of eight
crashes were investigated.
“All in all, it was a busy
weekend. Troopers were
hard at work, but the fatal
crashes still occurred,” Norris said. “The Gallia/Meigs
post will begin to focus
on the common factors
involved in the fatal crashes
in an attempt to prevent
future occurrences.”
Some recurring factors
include: Mature Drivers (55plus) — 63 percent.
Driving off the roadway
or outside marked lanes —
50 percent.
Alcohol and or drug
involvement — 38 percent.

Failure to wear seat belts
— 38 percent.
Failure to yield at intersections/ stop sign violations
— 25 percent.
Unsafe Speed — 25 percent.
State Route 143 — 25
percent.
Norris said the public’s
assistance is appreciated in
preventing crashes. With
mature drivers being
involved in 63 percent of the
crash picture, all suggestions
related to speaking with
mature drivers and discussing the issue will be considered, he said.
Norris urges people to
contact the Gallipolis post
for those who would like to
contribute to making the
community safer.

THEIR VIEW

Never
forget 9/11
There are many numbers to remember on Friday, the most solemn of days in America for nearly
a decade and a half, but there is only one you
really need to heed.
Two thousand, nine hundred and seventy-seven.
That’s the official number of people, according to the National September 11 Memorial &
Museum, who died 14 years ago Friday when
terrorists rammed passenger jets into the World
Trade Center’s twin towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the lone plane that
crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pa. That plane
was reportedly headed toward the White House or
the Capitol.
Each year since, we’ve marked 9/11 as a reminder that freedom isn’t free. We paid a horribly high
price in human lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and we
continue to pay the toll as we battle terrorism
abroad and at home.
If you’ve forgotten how you felt that day, you
need to look no further than the television. Cable
and satellite channels usually devote an entire
week to the events of 9/11. Each time we watch
it, the sadness of knowing how many lives were
senselessly wasted always returns. It is soon
replaced by anger and a steadfast resolve to never
let it happen again.
We should remember all the victims — the jet
passengers who were innocent bystanders in a
plan too grand to comprehend; the police, firefighters and emergency personnel who risked their
lives to climb into a towering inferno to rescue
trapped workers at the WTC and paid for it with
their lives; the victims inside the towers and on
the ground; and those inside the Pentagon.
All those who lost their lives will be remembered during thousands of ceremonies across the
country, including local ceremonies in the Ohio
Valley.
We took one heck of a punch to the face that
day, and many things in our everyday lives have
changed since then. But one thing remains the
same — our resolve to bounce back stronger than
ever.
Never forget Sept. 11, 2001.

the Secretary of Agriculture Tom
Vilsack, and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, and
worked closely with them to fight
to re-open the Japanese market. It
wasn’t easy.
Japan has some of the strictest food safety regulations in the
world. But by insisting on our
rights, including that standards
have to be science-based, we were
able to get Japan to lift its ban
on U.S.-processed beef products,
arrange to get a Japanese inspection team to MTG’s Akron plant,
and show that its products are safe
and meet Japanese standards.
It took two years of intense
effort. But by working it hard,
an agreement to re-open the
important Japanese market was
achieved. This was a victory for

Gourmet who brought this case
to me, but it was also a victory for
other food manufacturers in Ohio
and across America.
One important way to get our
economy back on track and see rising wages is to open more markets
for “Made in America” products.
Because some of the best and most
innovative products and ideas are
coming from Ohio workers and Ohio
companies, this is a great opportunity for us. A balanced approach
of more exports — combined with
tougher enforcement of our trade
laws — is one way to ensure that all
Ohioans can build a better future for
themselves and their families.

By Bryan Walters

POMEROY, Ohio — It’s
either a one-horse race or a

are stuck right in the

GLOUSTER, Ohio — It was a rough night on
the road for the Lady Rebels.
The South Gallia volleyball team were beaten in
consecutive games by Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Trimble 3-0 on Tuesday in Athens County. The Lady Rebels (3-2, 0-2 TVC Hocking) had difficulty in the early going and were not
able to overcome the Lady Tomcats (5-1, 2-0).
Trimble took the first two games by scores of
25-9. The Red and Gold were able to get some
momentum going in Game 3, but it wasn’t enough
as the Lady Tomcats took the third game 25-17.
Kirsten Howell led South Gallia with seven
service points, followed by Rachal Colburn,
Aaliyah Howell and Taylor Burnette with three
points each. Mariah Hineman, Courtney Haner,
Erin Evans and Haley Johnson each recorded two
points, while senior Kirstin Burnette and sophomore Hannah Shafer recorded a point each.
Senior Jayla Wolford led the team with four
blocks, while Olivia Hornsby got a team-high four
assists. Howell and Hornsby led the Lady Rebels
with seven kills each, followed by Colburn with
three. Howell and Allie Sweeney lead with five

ASHTON, W.Va. —
The first win of the season always feels good.
The Hannan volleyball
team gained its first win
of the 2015 campaign
after a 3-1 victory over
Ohio Valley Christian on
Tuesday in Mason County. The Lady Wildcats
(1-2) started the match
off strong, but the Lady
Defenders (0-4) kept it
close throughout.
The Blue and White
jumped out in front early
on in the first game,
but the Lady Defenders
came roaring back —
thanks to the efforts of
sophomore Katie Westfall and freshman Emily
Childers — to take 22-18
lead.
Senior Anna Taylor
served up five of the
next six points for 23-all
tie, then Shelbee Myers
put the finishing touches
on Hannan’s 25-23 Game
1 victory.

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — Sometimes a lead can disappear
right in front of your eyes.
Ohio Valley Christian soccer team surrendered two goals in
a six minute span Tuesday night, taking the Defenders 2-1 lead
and turning it into a 3-2 Fairland victory, in Gallia County.
The Dragons were on the scoreboard just five minutes into
play, as Alex Naegele scored an unassisted goal. The Defenders (1-3-2) tied the game on a Justin Beaver penalty kick, and
the teams remained deadlocked at halftime.
In the 51st minute of the game, OVCS senior Justin Sizemore broke free from the Fairland defense and found the back
of the net to give the Defenders a 2-1 advantage.
The Dragons tied the game in the 62nd minute, as Naegele
scored after a FHS corner kick. Just six minutes later, Naegele completed his hat trick and gave Fairland a 3-2 lead. The
Defenders failed to answer back and the Dragons claimed the
3-2 victory.
Ohio Valley Christian senior goalkeeper Marshall Hood
recorded 13 saves, while Alex Wood stopped 10 shots for
Fairland. Both teams finished with seven corner kicks, but
the Dragons head a 16-to-13 advantage in shots on goal.
The Defenders — who face Fairland in a rematch on September 29, in Proctorville — return to action on Thursday
when they visit Cross Lanes.
