Defense Against 'Killer'
Beware the killer at the seashore this

summer.

The tiller, says the · Environmental
SCience Services Administration, is the
rip current (often miscalled an undertow) - an insidious, pdwerful ocean ac·
lion which can exhaust the strongest of
swimmers but which even the average
swlmtner can easily escape if he knows
how.
The rip current Is a strong, narrow
current fiowing out to sea at right ang·
les,to the shore, carrying back to sea the
water brought In by waves and longshore eurrents. It can travel at speeds
up td three miles an hour and change its
position from day to rlay and even dur-.
ing the same day. The same beach may
have several rip curre.nts at one time and
then 10 for weeks w1th non~ at all.

Defense Against 'Killer'
Beware the killer at the seashore this

summer.

The tiller, says the · Environmental
SCience Services Administration, is the
rip current (often miscalled an undertow) - an insidious, pdwerful ocean ac·
lion which can exhaust the strongest of
swimmers but which even the average
swlmtner can easily escape if he knows
how.
The rip current Is a strong, narrow
current fiowing out to sea at right ang·
les,to the shore, carrying back to sea the
water brought In by waves and longshore eurrents. It can travel at speeds
up td three miles an hour and change its
position from day to rlay and even dur-.
ing the same day. The same beach may
have several rip curre.nts at one time and
then 10 for weeks w1th non~ at all.
