Gentile seeks
re-election to
Ohio Senate
Staff Report

OHIO VALLEY — State Sen. Lou Gentile,
Democrat from Ohio’s 30th Senate district,
announced Tuesday he is seeking a second term
in the Ohio Senate.
Gentile serves as the assistant minority whip
and is a member of the Senate Finance Committee.
“We have accomplished many things working
together these past four years,” Gentile said.
“I’m running for re- election because there is still
more to do.”
“I am optimistic about our future, and I want
to continue my work to bring good jobs to the
region so our young people stay and raise their
families here,” he added.
Gentile has served as the district’s senator
since his appointment in 2011 and is currently
serving his first full term in the Ohio Senate
after winning election to the seat in 2012.
He has previously served as the assistant
director in former Gov. Ted Strickland’s Office
of Appalachia. The office serves as an advocate
for Ohio’s Appalachian region, with the goal of
coordinating economic and community development to improve the lives of those living in the
region.
Ohio’s 30th Senate district includes Belmont,
Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson, Meigs, Monroe,
Noble and Washington counties, and parts of
Athens and Vinton counties. Athens, Meigs and
Vinton have been identified by the Appalachian
Regional Commission as distressed counties
and Gentile has been able to secure additional
funding for economic development in the area
through Ohio’s Appalachian Development Districts.
Gentile has been consistent in his efforts to
urge state oil and gas companies to use local
workers on new energy projects, As a Senate
Finance Committee member, the senator successfully secured scholarship funding for college
students seeking new energy jobs.
“I have a strong record of standing up for local
workers, fighting for fair school funding and
advocating for investment in our local communities and infrastructure,” Gentile said.

Snowmen make a brief return
By Lorna Hart
lhart@civitasmedia.com

POMEROY — The snowmen sat
quietly in the wrapped storefront
window at Weaving Stitches during
the recent Open House in Pomeroy,
waiting for the doors to open.
It had been over 15 years since they
had been seen, and all 88 of them vanished before the day was over.
The story begins when Eloise
Drenner decided to make baskets
and a collection of animals to sell at
craft shows. One of her top shows
was the Bob Evans Farm Festival,
where her snowmen gained a following.
Each year, a different snowman
was made, and to many of her
patrons, they became collectibles.
Drenner continued making her
crafts with the dream of establishing her own shop. Her journey took
on many fronts in Pomeroy, until
Weaving Stitches opened in 1997.

her mother’s journey has

She recounted that her

snowmen.
“That’s where the name

THEIR VIEW

Christmas has
always been scary
Black Friday shoppers throughout America
affirmed the hustle and madness of Christmas.
Mall shopping was down by 10 percent, but
zaniness seemed to be up by at least 10 percent or
more. Viral videos of mall fights and huge crowds
did not entice hesitant shoppers to jump into the
weekend fray of traffic jams and shopping craziness.
Most Americans did not break a
stride last weekend when it came to
pursuing routine shopping and travel
activities. However, the news kept us
on edge with high alerts about the
ever lurking possibility of terrorism.
Ever since Sept. 11, 2001, Americans have rightly lived with paranoia
of imminent danger. We are a bit
Glenn
scared about flying but we do it anyMollette
Contributing way. We have become a bit scared
about concert and sports events,
Columnist
but mostly we go anyway. We have
become nervous about public crowds
such as the Boston Marathon or a parade. We just
don’t know what might happen. Some idiot who
has deemed his or her own life worthless may
show up anywhere with the goal of killing anyone.
It’s just crazy and scary.
Radical militant Muslims who utilize their own
slick media resources do everything possible to
continue this fear permeation of our society. I
don’t want to give them anything, but sadly, they
have been successful. They have succeeded in fear
mongering. However, they have not succeeded in
halting the American way of life nor the French
way of life.
The American people will not stop flying or
traveling the highways. Americans will go to the
Macy’s Christmas parade. They will go to Times
Square and they will attend the sporting events
throughout our country. They will also go to the
malls and shop. The only reason the store traffic
was down was because more people are shopping
online, which was up 10 percent last weekend.
The first Christmas was scary. Mary and Joseph
were flat broke. They had taxes to pay. They had
a baby coming into the world. She turned up pregnant before they were married and nobody bought
the Holy Ghost story.
In the meantime, King Herod, who was scary
in his own right, ordered all male babies under
2 years old to be murdered. He didn’t want any
competition from a baby who might take his place.
We can hardly imagine all the emotions that this
peasant family of Mary, Joseph and the baby experiened. Since then, Christmas has presented challenges and some new anxieties for most of us.
We have growing fears in America. Terrorism,
joblessness, taxes; life’s uncertainties abound for
all of us. The first family of Christmas didn’t let
the scary stuff stop them from experiencing the
wonders of that first Bethlehem night. Life for
them wasn’t easy.
We have to keep moving and living strong in
America. We have to deal with and overcome this
scary stuff today as we rediscover and celebrate
the joy and real meaning of Christmas in our
hearts and lives.

are available, are based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
The Air Force can, however, be
over the Russian base at Latakia in
12 hours to blast this system and
probably ignite World War III. It
won’t happen. The United States
abdicated air superiority by not
establishing a robust aerial presence including elements comparable to, and in some cases superior
to, what Putin has in place.
So, the French, who won their
last war in 1809, are in Moscow
beseeching Putin to turn on ISIS.
He may do it, given that Putin has
no reservations about blasting oiltanker convoys, something American air power could have done but
didn’t because burning oil trucks
might hurt the environment and
further global warming (which the
president thinks is ISIS’s raison
d’etre—as though folks from Syria
aren’t used to heat and precious
water challenges) and it might also
drive prices at the pump back up
during the coming election year.
The problem is lack of intestinal fortitude. Where’s Winston
Churchill when we need him?
It takes someone who has the
courage to call human-burning,
Christian-crucifying Islamic fundamentalists a real enemy and then
destroy them—not degrade or
contain—but utterly destroy them.
And now France and Russia lead
the way. Abdication.

Martinez (Montpellier,
France) recorded his 11th
clean sheet of the season
and was credited with one
save.
Mercuri had five saves
in the loss for the Bulldogs, who had beaten Rio
Grande, 2-1, on Oct. 3 in
Barbourville, Ky.
“We got both of the goals
in the first half and, had it
not been for a pretty nice
save by their goalkeeper
on a PK, we could’ve had
a third,” Morrissey said.
“What we did accomplish
offensively early on made
a difference and, because
of the defensive effort
after that, we never really
seemed to be in danger.
Hopefully, we can take
that same kind effort into
the match on Wednesday
against Indiana Wesleyan.
We’re very familiar with
them and know the kind of
quality team and program
that they have.”
