Circuit Court in West Virginia for concealment of

Deering asked Wagner
if he sees and speaks
with his attorneys on
what he thinks is enough
time; does he get along
with his attorneys; and
does he feel as though
he is getting good representation: Wagner IV
answered yes to all three
questions.
A somewhat of an
unusual request was
made by Wagner IV to
be placed in solitary
confinement while waiting on his trial. Wagner
IV is housed in the Ross
County Jail. Pike County
Prosecutor Rob Junk
told the court where he
is placed in the facility

Sheriff. Deering agreed,

saying he wasn’t sure
if that was possible at
this time because Ross
County is doing some
remodeling to the jail
facility.
Usually solitary confinement is given to a
prisoner who either is a
threat to other prisoners or who may be in
danger in the general
population. Courthouse
security was tight Friday
with the back entrance
of the courthouse roped
off to allow the safe
entrance and egress of
Wagner IV.
In other matters
relating to the hearing, Deering said there
was a motion for a bill
of particulars by the
defense concerning the
state’s evidence of DNA
on Wagner IV. Knight
said he has been working with the state on the
matter and at this time
he is satisfied.

Deering set a discovery deadline in the case
for June 1. He also set
the next pretrial date for
May 23 at 1:30 pm.
The Wagners are
charged in the murders
of Hannah Gilley, 20;
Christopher Rhoden
Sr., 40; Christopher
Rhoden Jr., 16; Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden,
20; Dana Rhoden 37;
Gary Rhoden 38; Hanna
Rhoden 19; and Kenneth
Rhoden, 44. The Rhoden family was found
murdered on April 22,
2016 at four different residences in Pike
County.
There were small children in the homes whose
lives were not taken on
that day, including a four
day old infant who was
reportedly in bed with
her deceased mother
when found. The children reportedly remain
in state care.

According to thevietnamewar.info, around
58,000 estimated American military personnel
were lost in the conflict. Roughly 47,000 of
those were lost in combat and nearly 11,000
died of other causes.
Dean Wright can be reached at
(740) 446-2342, Ext. 2103.

In a press conference
by Ohio Governor Mike
DeWine, who at the
time was attorney general, the motive in the
murders could have been
a custody battle between
Edward Wagner and
Hannah Rhoden for
their daughter. He said
in the press conference
the eight members of
the Rhoden family were
“Killed execution style.”
DeWine noted this
might be the largest
scale murder investigation in Ohio history.
Court proceeding

Deering’s courtroom

Newcomb and Fredericka Wagner appearing

and George Wagner

POINT PLEASANT,
W.Va. — Making the
most of opportunities.
Visiting Ripley
stranded runners in
scoring position in five
different innings, while
the Point Pleasant
softball team produced
all of its runs with two
outs Tuesday night during a 6-3 non-conference victory in Mason
County.
The host Lady
Knights (2-1) scored at

their first five innings
at the plate as the
Red and Black led 2-0
through two, 4-0 after
three and were up 5-0
entering the top of the

The Lady Vikings
used a pair of errors
and a groundout to
manufacture their first
score of the game,
but Point Pleasant
countered with Peyton
Jordan sacrifice fly that
allowed Amber Hatfield
to score for a 6-1 edge
after five complete.
RHS left runners at
the corners in the sixth
and stranded a runner
at second in the top
half of the seventh, ultimately allowing Point
to wrap up the threerun triumph.
The Lady Knights
also left multiple baserunners in scoring position in the first, second
and fourth frames, as
well as having runners
stranded at second
in the third and sixth
innings.
Overall, Ripley left
10 runners on base
and PPHS had nine
stranded on the bags.
Point Pleasant outhit
the guests by a 10-6

WATERFORD, Ohio — A solid start to league
play.
The Wahama baseball team rallied from an early
2-0 deficit with eight consecutive scores and ultimately opened Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division play in style Tuesday night with an 8-3 victory
over host Waterford in Washington County.
The visiting White Falcons (3-1, 1-0 TVC Hocking) surrendered back-to-back walks in the bottom
of the first that ultimately resulted in a pair of runs
due to a groundout and a passed ball, allowing the
Wildcats (0-1 TVC Hocking) to take a quick tworun cushion after an inning of play.
The Red and White, however, countered with
four hits, a walk and the benefit of an error in the
top of the second — allowing Wahama to score
three times for what proved to be a permanent
advantage.
Tanner Smith received a leadoff walk, then Brady
Bumgarner and Ethan VanMatre followed with
back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Waterford then committed an error that allowed
Smith to score for a 2-1 deficit, but the hosts also
turned a double play that left Bumgarner stuck at
third with two away.
Ethyn Barnitz singled to left-center while driving
in Bumgarner for a tie game, then Barnitz stole second and came around to score on a single to right
by David Hendrick for a 3-2 advantage.
The Green and White mustered only two baserunners during their next four at-bats, while Wahama added to its cushion in bottom of the fourth as
VanMatre and Trevor Hunt scored on an error and
a groundout — making it a 5-2 contest midway
through the fourth.
Three hits and three errors allowed Wahama
to add another three runs in the top of the sixth,
which extended the lead out to 8-2.
Tyler Bumgarner and Antonio Serevicz each
provided RBI singles in the sixth, while an error
allowed Tanner Smith to also drive in a run.
Miller singled home Zimmer with two away in
the bottom of the sixth to wrap up the five-run outcome.
The White Falcons outhit the hosts by an 8-4
overall margin and also committed four of the nine
errors in the contest. Wahama stranded eight runners on base, while Waterford left only four on the
bags.
Tyler Bumgarner was the winning pitcher of
record after allowing one earned run and four hits
over 6.2 innings of relief while striking out two.
Miller took the loss after surrendering three earned
runs, four hits and three walks over three frames
while fanning two.
Hendrick paced Wahama with two hits, with
Serevicz, VanMatre, Hunt, Barnitz, Tyler Bumgarner and Brady Bumgarner also providing a safety
apiece.
Hendrick, Serevicz, Barnitz, Tyler Bumgarner
and Jonathan Frye each drove in a run. Hendrick,
Frye, Smith, VanMatre, Hunt, Barnitz, Brady
Bumgarner and Brayden Davenport also scored a
run apiece.
Hansell, Hayes, Miller and Stephens had a hit
each for the Wildcats. Zimmer and Miller drove in
a run apiece, while Hansell, Heiss and Zimmer each
scored once.
Wahama hosted Southern on Wednesday and
returns to action Friday when it welcomes Federal
Hocking for a TVC Hocking matchup at 5 p.m.

Higginbotham noted
that there is never a

especially when roughly
70 percent of your

Then again, that was
also one of the things
that made this victory
particularly special —
especially this early in
the season.
“We needed to gain
the confidence. Seven
of our ten positions
were fielded by freshmen tonight, and we
made the plays we
needed to when we
needed to,” Higginbotham said. “We had
some snafus, but we
executed fairly well and
we had some timely
hits. Rylee (Cochran)
also pitched really well
for us tonight in some
tough situations. It’s
early in the season and
we’ll get better, but this
was a good win for our
young group.”
