Health officials instead call for

More the 500 new cases were

“Emergency action needs to be
taken to reverse the situation to

while visiting Sierra Leone on
Friday.
But a top official from Doctors

“We can’t create a prison in the

Severe measures such as cordoning off entire neighborhoods
can backfire by provoking unrest
and instability that makes controlling the disease even more difficult, he warned.

beans, rice, lentils, sugar, tomato
paste and cooking oil. The helicopters have also evacuated the
sick and wounded, but only have
room for those in most desperate
need of care.
They face a far worse fate if
the town falls. The Islamic State
group, which has carved out a
vast, self-styled caliphate straddling the Iraqi-Syrian border,
views Shiites as apostates. The
group has posted grisly videos
and photos of mass killings and
beheadings, including the killing of American journalist James
Foley, who was captured in Syria.
Amirli is no stranger to extremist violence. In 2007 a truck
carrying 4.5 tons of explosives
concealed under watermelons
exploded in the town center, leveling dozens of mud brick homes
and killing at least 150 people,
making it one of the deadliest
single bombings in Iraq. That
attack was blamed on al-Qaida in
Iraq, a precursor to the Islamic
State group.
Earlier this week, the U.N. special representative for Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, called for immediate
action in Amirli “to prevent the
possible massacre of its citizens.”

THEIR VIEW

Labor Day — and
any day — count
your blessings
The average American is happy to have a paying job with the opportunity to make a little more
money. Most Americans would like to work a
few extra hours when they could. However, many
Americans dream of retiring to fish, golf, garden
or relax. Others enjoy working so much that they
never quit.
It all depends on the kind of work you do. If you
are a coal miner, then retirement at 55 looks great.
If the daily manual labor is not too overtaxing,
then many enjoy staying on the job.
We know of many people in their 70s and older
who still work five days a week and sometimes
more. Some have no immediate plans to retire, but
they all agree that staying busy has been good for
their mental and physical health.
On the flip side are people in their 70s who
must work. They have jobs they don’t really enjoy,
but without working they may not be able to survive.
Life would be almost impossible without Social
Security and Medicare for America’s senior adults.
Most of our elderly would be starving or homeless
without these two government programs. These
programs, along with people working whatever
jobs they can find, keep most of America’s seniors
off the streets. We only wish that the money collected from people would stay in these programs.
Every American deserves a break on Labor Day
weekend, Sunday or some day during the week.
A rest from the daily grind helps us to reflect and
appreciate life a little more.
Unfortunately, millions of Americans would love
the opportunity to work through Labor Day and
the rest of the holidays if they could find a paying
job. Without an income, it’s almost impossible to
relax and enjoy any day.
On Labor Day — or any day — count your
blessings if life is going well for you.

THEIR VIEW

A photographer can only do so much
By Daris Howard

The headlights came up behind
me on the long, dark stretch of
road, and I got that sinking feeling
as I saw the lights flashing in my
rear view mirror.
I pulled over, and the policeman
came to my window. “Did you
know you were going 60 in a 55
mile per hour zone?”
I had to admit that I hadn’t been
paying attention to it, as my mind
had been occupied with more
important things, like what dinner
would be when I got home.
He requested the regular material, driver’s license, registration,
proof of insurance and two hours
of my life while he called it all in.
Finally he came back and shone
his flashlight in my face, and then
at my driver’s license, and then
again at my face.
“You know, I don’t think this picture looks like you at all.”
“Thank you,” I replied. “That is
the nicest thing anyone has said to
me all day.”
That was a true statement. I had
spent my day listening to students,
who had procrastinated on their
work to the end, whine about their
low grades and wonder why they
couldn’t make up a full semester’s
work in a few hours.
But the police officer wasn’t
there to try to make my day better.
“I didn’t mean it as a compliment,”
he growled. “I was wondering if
this is really you.”
I assured him it was me. Nonetheless, I was happy I didn’t look
like the picture on my driver’s

license. I’ve never seen anybody’s
picture on some kind of identification that actually makes a person
look good. I mean, the picture is
about a half inch by a half inch.
It seems that a camera has the
uncanny ability to filter out any
good qualities when shrunk to a
picture that size.
And how a person can tell who
it really is, I don’t know. No one
would have hardly known the difference if I had put anyone’s picture there, Einstein, Hillary Clinton, my dog. Okay, so they may
have figured something was up
with my dog because he is better
looking than me, but they might
have just thought I had a bad hair
day with the other two.
And speaking of pictures, I’ve
never been fond of having mine in
public places. Maybe that comes
from college roommates taking
my picture and creating a “most
wanted” type of poster and putting it up around campus to let
everyone know I was the only guy
who still didn’t have a date to the
preference formal.
Perhaps that is why, when I first
started writing for the newspaper,
and they insisted that I have a
photo, I tried to beg out of it. I
hoped they could run my column
without everyone seeing what I
look like. I was afraid that anyone
seeing the picture would choose
not to read the column.
Despite my aversion to pictures
of me in public, the newspaper
insisted. They said I could either
go and get my own done at a pro-

fessional studio, or I could just
come in and they would take my
picture themselves. I didn’t think
it mattered all that much because
the subject is still the same, and a
professional photographer could
only get a better shot if he did
something like forget to take the
lens cap off when he took the picture.
I waited as long as I could, but
I finally could wait no longer, as
the day had arrived that my first
column was to go to print. I reluctantly stepped into the newspaper
office, and the girl smiled kindly.
“Okay, step up to the wall and give
us your best pose.”
I obediently walked to where
she pointed and turned to face the
wall. “Ha, ha, ha,” she said, sarcastically. “Very funny. Now turn and
face me.”
I turned to face her, and she
started giving me orders: chin up,
eyes forward, smile.
She stopped for a moment. “You
know what? I think we need you to
take your glasses off so we can see
your face. Glasses just hide what
you really look like.”
I felt good, thinking that here
was a pretty young girl who wanted me to take my glasses off so she
and everyone else could see me
better. I obediently took them off
and smiled my best smile at her.
She paused for a moment, and
then said, “On second thought,
put them back on.”

Ohio State hears from ex-band director’s backers
By Julie Carr Smyth
Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Angry
backers of Ohio State’s
fired marching band
director made a splashy
showing at a trustee
meeting Friday, playing
their horns, wearing
T-shirts supporting him
and urging the board to
keep discussions on the
matter open.
Jonathan Waters was
fired July 24 after a
two-month university
investigation concluded
he turned a blind eye to
a “sexualized culture”
inside what’s considered
one of the nation’s most
innovative bands, including students marching in
their underwear, playing
groping games, doling
out sometimes sexually
explicit nicknames and
singing from a lewd songbook.
Band parents, alumni
and other supporters
lined the boardroom on
campus after serenading
the meeting with songs
familiar to what fans call
The Best Damn Band in
The Land. A pro-Waters
banner was flown overhead.
Board Chairman Jeffrey Wadsworth allotted
five minutes for them to
say their piece through a
designee, band alumnus
and lawyer Gary Leppla,
even though school officials have repeatedly said
Waters’ dismissal will not
be revisited. Waters supporters want to respect
the process and have a
voice in the process, Leppla said.

Wadsworth said in a
statement that trustees
are “mindful of the effect
this transition is having
on many current and former band members and
supporters,” but that the
issue is closed.
“All of us are excited to
turn the page and begin
the 137th season of the
‘Pride of the Buckeyes’
with new faces and a
renewed commitment to
the values that make this
university one of the best
in the world,” he said.
“We are moving forward.”
Mary Ann Kimbro,
whose son served seven
years in the band, shouted out after the designee
spoke and board members
disbanded, accusing them
of being too busy to hear
from band boosters who
are being ignored and disrespected.
“We just cannot tell you
how humiliating this has
been,” she told reporters
after board members left
the room. “Not just for
Jon. This is bigger than
Jon. … This is humiliating for all of us Buckeyes.
When you say O-H anywhere in this country, you
get an I-O.”
The university has said
Waters lied to investigators about certain facts
and timelines surrounding the case, which began
with a complaint from a
band parent.
His supporters defend
his reputation and that
of the celebrated band,
whose halftime shows,
including one in the
formation of Michael
Jackson doing the moonwalk, grab hundreds of

thousands of views on
YouTube. Several witnesses interviewed in the
investigation have come
forward to say their statements were mischaracterized or inaccurate in the
report.
Leppla told the board

WASHINGTON — The case of Mehdi Nemmouche
haunts U.S. intelligence officials.
Nemmouche is a Frenchman who authorities say
spent 11 months fighting with the Islamic State group
in Syria before returning to Europe to act out his rage.
On May 24, prosecutors say, he methodically shot
four people at the Jewish Museum in central Brussels.
Three died instantly, one afterward. Nemmouche was
arrested later, apparently by chance.
For U.S. and European counterterrorism officials,
that 90-second spasm of violence is the kind of attack
they fear from thousands of Europeans and up to 100
Americans who have gone to fight for extremist armies
in Syria and now Iraq.
The Obama administration has offered a wide range
of assessments of the threat to U.S. national security
posed by the extremists who say they’ve established a
caliphate, or Islamic state, in an area straddling eastern Syrian and northern and western Iraq, and whose
actions include last week’s beheading of American journalist James Foley. Some officials say the group is more
dangerous than al-Qaida. Yet intelligence assessments
say it currently couldn’t pull off a complex, 9-11-style
attack on the U.S. or Europe.
However, there is broad agreement across intelligence and law enforcement agencies of the immediate
threat from radicalized Europeans and Americans who
could come home to conduct lone-wolf operations.
Such plots are difficult to detect because they don’t
require large conspiracies of people whose emails or
phone calls can be intercepted.
The 2013 Boston Marathon bombings were like that,
carried out by radicalized American brothers Dzhokhar
and Tamerlan Tsarnaev acting on their own. So was
the 2010 attempt to bomb New York’s Times Square by
Faisal Shahzad, who received training and direction in
Pakistan but operated alone in the United States.
On Friday, Britain raised its terror threat from “substantial” to “severe,” its second highest level, citing
a foreign fighter danger that made a terrorist attack
“highly likely.” The U.S. didn’t elevate its national terrorist threat level, though White House press secretary
Josh Earnest said the administration was closely monitoring the situation. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh
Johnson said Friday that U.S. authorities aren’t aware
of any “specific, credible” threats to the U.S. homeland
from the group.
So far, Nemmouche is the only foreign fighter affiliated with the Islamic State group who authorities say
returned from the battlefield to carry out violence, and
some scholars argue the danger is overstated. But nearly
every senior national security official in the U.S. government — including the attorney general, FBI director,
homeland security secretary and leaders of key intelligence and military agencies — has called foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq their top terrorism worry.

Ohio State was among
55 colleges and universities revealed in May as

Department, either after

were complying with

Title IX provisions regulating institutions’ handling of sexual violence.

equal access to sports,
but it has been used
increasingly by sexual
abuse victims who say
their schools failed to protect them.

In this Oct. 18, 2013 file photo, Ohio Gov. John Kasich speaks
at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. For an ambitious group
of Republican governors, next year’s mid-term elections
could be a springboard to bigger things in 2016. Just don’t
talk about the White House yet. An annual Republican
Governors Association meeting this week included a bullish
outlook for a party that will be defending 22 seats in 2014.

by 60 percent of Ohio voters
in 2011. Appointees have at
times said Kasich’s team bullied them out of their jobs.
A Quinnipiac University poll released in July
showed fewer than half of
Ohio voters — 48 percent
— were ready to vote for
Kasich. That figure represented a significant advantage over FitzGerald,
whom only 36 percent of
voters favored even before
his latest troubles. But,
according to that same
poll, 54 percent of Ohio
voters backed Kasich at
this point in his 2010 race

against Strickland, a much
more formidable and wellfunded challenger.
Conservatives who
wanted to see an alternative to Kasich on the Nov.
4 ballot are still likely
to show up at the polls
to vote for local issues,
predicts tea party leader
Tom Zawistowski, but
they’ll probably abstain
from casting a vote for
governor.
“I think it can send a
message not to vote for
him,” Zawistowski said.
“It can send a message
that I have no choice.”

He said Kasich and his
supporters have shut out
other conservative voices
and attacked FitzGerald
full-force because they
wanted to win by a landslide in order to pave the
way to a White House
bid: “The (Republican)
convention’s going to be
in Cleveland and they’re
doing everything to make
it a Kasich coronation.”
Baldwin-Wallace University political science
professor Barbara Palmer
called that a stretch.
“I don’t see Kasich
as the scorched earth
candidate. He tried the
scorched-earth approach
with the unions and it
backfired, and he’s smart
enough to learn from
that,” she said. “He seems
to be running what I’d call
a textbook campaign.”
For Democrats, the
main question is how
damaging the waning
support for FitzGerald
will be for their downticket candidates.
When asked about
residual effects of
FitzGerald’s troubles on
other statewide candidates, state Sen. Nina
Turner, the Democratic
secretary of state candidate, said, quoting Winston Churchill, “When
you’re going through hell,

you keep on going and
that’s pretty much what
we are doing.”
FitzGerald’s Aug. 22
decision to divert money
to get-out-the-vote efforts
— touted by former
President Bill Clinton as
a key to Ohio Democrats’
victory in the state this
year — could bolster
some of the party’s stronger candidates, including
state Reps. John Patrick
Carney and Connie Pillich. They are challenging
Auditor Dave Yost and
Treasurer Josh Mandel,
respectively.
Niven said if Kasich
wins by a landslide,
FitzGerald’s shortcomings
— not any Kasich aspirations for the White House
— are to blame.
“This has been one
of the great unexpected
gifts that a candidate has
received,” he said. “The
totality of Ed FitzGerald’s
being unable to function
as a candidate, no one
could have predicted that.
With Kasich having won
the first time with just
49 percent of the vote, in
a quintessential purple
state, and having 60 percent of Ohioans renounce
one of his signature policies? This was anything
but a slam dunk.”

South Gallia runningback Dominick Seward (10) tries to avoid a handful of
Sciotoville East defenders during Friday night’s season opener at Rebel Field in
Mercerville, Ohio.

MERCERVILLE, Ohio —
The South Gallia Rebels made
an opening statement Friday
night with a 48-12 triumph
over the visiting Sciotoville
East Tartans in a Week 1
gridiron matchup at Rebel Stadium.
Akia Brown of SEHS
returned the opening kickoff
for a 71-yard touchdown within the first 15 seconds of the
game and with the failed PAT,
the Tartans had the lead of 6-0.
It would also prove to be the
only time in which East had
the lead during the game.
South Gallia followed by
taking its opening drive all
the way down the field, which

resulted in a nine-yard touchdown run by Isiah Geiger.
SGHS missed the PAT, tying
the contest at six with 5:32 left
in the first quarter.
Geiger rushed for a second
touchdown at the 2:50 mark in
the first quarter, this time from
seven yards out. A successful
two-point conversion by Geiger pushed the lead to 14-6 by
the end of the first quarter.
Within the first four minutes
into the second quarter, Landon Hutchinson of SGHS connected to Joseph Ehman for a
61-yard touchdown pass and
an unsuccessful PAT, allowing
the Rebels to increase the lead
out to 20-6.
With 3:50 remaining in the
first half, Landon Hutchinson
completed another pass to

Joseph Ehman for an 80-yard
touchdown — and a successful
two-point conversion by Isiah
Geiger gave the hosts a lead of
28-6.
Landon Hutchinson rushed
for a 25-yard touchdown and
added a successful two-point
conversion, giving the Rebels a
comfortable lead of 36-6. Just
as time ran out on the first
half, Drew Lowe completed
a 43-yard touchdown pass to
Akia Brown for a 36-12 contest
going into halftime.
At the 7:11 mark of the third
quarter, Dakota Wroten of
South Gallia ran for a seven
yard touchdown run, giving
SGHS a lead of 42-12. With

The survivors attending this year’s Gallia County Relay For Life prepare to kick off the laps with their “survivor lap.”

Gallia Co. Relay For Life raises $67K
Staff reports
GDTnews@civitasmedia.com

GALLIPOLIS — Officials with the Gallia County
American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Planning
Committee say this year’s eventAug. 23-24 in Gallipolis City Park raised more than $67,000.
This year’s event kicked off with the Ohio Valley
Bicycle Club “Jon’s Ride For Life,” in memory of Jon
Burris. More than 70 riders participated in the event
and a special lead-off was provided by Jon’s son,
Brayden Burris.
The American Cancer Society Gallia County Relay
for Life is characterized with a Survivor’s Reception,
sponsored by Drs. Alice and Eddie Dachowski — survivor’s lap, caregiver lap and a parade of teams. In
addition, special remarks were provided by Ray McKinniss with a musical presentations by Shana Smith
and Paul “Bub” Williams throughout the event.
The American Cancer Society declared Relay for
Life their signature event in 1996. Relay for Life
began in Tacoma, Wash., in May 1985 when Dr. Gordy
Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the
income of his local American Cancer Society office.
Brayden Burris, front right, gets ready to lead out the Ohio Valley Bicycle Club “Jon’s Ride For Life” on Aug. 24.
He decided to personally raise money for the fight by
doing something he enjoyed — running marathons.
Dr. Klatt spent 24 hours circling the track in Tacoma
at the University of Puget Sound’s Baker Stadium for
more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid
$25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him, and at the end
of the evening, he had raised $27,000 to fight cancer
with the help of nearly 300 friends. An effort that was
started by one man, has turned into a national event.
Klatt passed away Aug. 4. Just a few years ago, Klatt
was diagnosed with cancer and took many measures
to overcome a disease he fought both personally
through relay events, and professionally through his
job as an oncologist. He passed away from congestive
heart failure at the University of Washington Medical
Center in Seattle.
Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost
to cancer will never be forgotten; that those who face
cancer will be supported; and that one day cancer
will be eliminated. This event offers everyone in the
community an opportunity to participate in the fight

Relay
From Page C1

During Relay for Life events, teams of 10 to 15
people take turns walking around a track — or in this
case, Gallipolis City Park — with a goal of a representative of the team on the track at all times during the
event. Everyone’s team shares a common purpose —
support of the American Cancer Society’s mission to
eliminate cancer.
A cancer patient endures months, sometimes years,
of treatment and life-changing issues. Staying overnight at the relay is one small way to symbolize and
support the struggles of cancer patients and their
families.
The light and darkness of the day and night parallel
the physical effects, emotions and mental state of a
cancer patient while undergoing treatment.
As the evening goes on, it gets darker and colder,
just as the emotions of the cancer patient. Patients
often become exhausted, sick, not wanting to go on,
possibly wanting to give up. As a participant in the
relay, one may feel much the same way. Just as the
cancer patient cannot stop or give up, neither can its
participants. They must continue.
The morning light brings the warmth of a new day,
full of life and new beginnings. As a participant, one
feels the brightness of the morning and know that the
end of relay is close at hand.
There is no finish line until a cure is found.
