Representatives from several first responder agencies were on hand Monday morning for the
announcement of “The resource you share may be the resource you need” campaign. Pictured (from

Health Department Administrator Courtney Midkiff, Meigs County Commissioner Jimmy Will, Meigs
County EMA Director Jamie Jones, Gallia-Jackson-Meigs ADAMH Board Executive Director Robin
Harris and Deputy Director Angie Stowers, Meigs County Sheriff’s Office representative Cheyenne
Martin, Meigs County EMS/911 Director Robbie Jacks and Meigs County Firefighter’s Association
President Derek Miller.

POMEROY — Local
agencies are teaming up
to serve those who serve
their communities.
The Gallia-JacksonMeigs Alcohol, Drug
Addiction and Mental
Health Board Executive
Director Robin Harris,
Deputy Director Angie
Stowers and Meigs County Health Department
Administrator Courtney
Midkiff were joined by
representatives from area
first responder agencies

on Monday morning to
launch a new campaign
to help area first responders.
“The resource you
share may be the
resource you need” is the
theme for the campaign
which provides resource
bags to law enforcement
officers, firefighters and
EMS personnel who
serve as first responders
in Meigs County.
The resource bags are
a partnership between
the ADAMH Board and
the health department.
Harris explained that

nationwide there is a lot
of attention on what is
happening in the first
responder community.
A recent study showed
that more police officers
are dying as a result of
suicide than in the line of
duty, said Harris. That,
coupled with a study
earlier this year from
Ohio University showing Meigs County with
the third highest suicide
rate in the state lead to
the focus of the ADAMH
Board. (Jackson County

scheduled to attend.
The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus said

Doubts emerge about pick for US intelligence chief

Healthy
dislike of
oats for hay
It’s funny how something someone says in a
completely unrelated conversation will take you
a trip down memory lane into events that you
hadn’t thought about in years. Such
an incident occurred over the past
weekend.
Three or four of we guys were
visiting with our pastor in his office
and talking farming. We talked about
how meager the hay crop was going
to be this year, which is when one
Herb
of the men mentioned that he baled
Day
oats this year, and the other two
Contributing agreed that oats are as good as hay.
columnist
Now don’t get the impression that
I have real opinion about the nutritional value of hay, but I can without hesitation
say that I don’t like oats for hay. Period.
Why?
It was the late 1960s and life on the farm wasn’t
as enjoyable for a boy who had begun to wonder
what might be going on beyond the boundaries of
the Ponderosa (we really didn’t call our farm The
Ponderosa. Just sayin’). Dad had sown several
acres of oats that year and was earlier conflicted
as to whether he would combine or bale them. He
chose the latter.
I remember the heat was searing, and the moisture content of the oats was probably too high to
bale and put into the barn but for some reason we
did anyway. If you know anything about packing
excessively damp hay into a barn in the heat of the
summer, you know the results can be devastating.
Predictably, under Dad’s watchful eye, the hay
began heating up and he assigned the job of breaking up hay bales to me and a cousin, Jerry Fyffe.
Jerry and I were not opposed to working hard,
but we were opposed to working hard when having fun might go neglected. So, we tried to do
both. We had one of the better hay fights I believe
I ever engaged in!
For some reason, that wasn’t the idea Dad had
for us upon assigning us hay-busting duty. As I
recall, Jerry started it.
Don’t ask him, though. He may lie to you.
I am sure there was more to Dad being upset
with us than our just being playful, but nonetheless, after several instructions from down on the
ground to “knock off playing and get on with the
work” which we (yes, I said WE, Jerry) ignored, I
(yes I said I, Jerry) was in trouble! Big trouble!
Dad instructed me to come out of the hay
mound to receive my punishment, and knowing
the sad nature of that, this 12-year old boy knew
he had best become resourceful beyond his years
quickly! And I did. It wasn’t graceful. It wasn’t
pretty.
And most of all it wasn’t nice, but it was the
only way I thought I could escape the grips of a
certain display of correction to my behind!
I pretended not to hear him, and I knew that
because my father was asthmatic, he wouldn’t
come up into the hay mound to get me! I stand
before you today because of that decision. He
didn’t come up to get me, but he was waiting
nearby when I came down.
Thankfully, enough time had passed that he
began to see some humor in it all, and he didn’t
kill me as I feared he might (not really, that’s just
how, never-mind).
I don’t mean to leave you with the impression
that he and I had a good laugh about it, put our
arms around one another’s shoulders and went
and shared an iced tea. No, as I remember It was
a day or two later before sitting was comfortable,
but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had earlier feared.
As for my cousin Jerry, well, he slipped out
somehow without receiving the wrath of my dad,
not to mention, he was an adult by this point (in
age only), but I still love him anyway.
Yes, I found it somewhat humorous over the
weekend that just the mere mention of oats hay,
made it uncomfortable to sit down even 50 years
later! Thanks guys!

THEIR VIEW

Why I hate interstates
I don’t think that I was
ever more frightened.
My entire life has been
spent in small cities in
southwest Ohio. I’ve lived
in Germantown, Marysville and Wilmington.
During rush-hour in
these cities, we only need
to wait for the traffic light
to change and we’re on
our way. Getting from
one side of town to the
other may take 10 or
15 minutes. If there’s a
fender-bender along your
route it might take a bit
longer, but I never felt
like my life was in danger.
For several years, while
living in Germantown
and working at Miami
Valley Hospital, on the
way home at the end of
my hospital shift, I often
had to endure the mad
rush of NCR traffic. In
fact, our boss at MVH
scheduled our work shift
to begin and end 15 minutes before NCR.
If I was running late,
instead of zipping down
Main Street and crossing
the Stewart Street Bridge
in just a few minutes, I
would end up sitting in
my old ’64 Chevy Impala
in the midst of the whirl
of NCR employees who
were fighting to get
home. It was nuts.
That only lasted a few
years. When I moved to
Marysville, I could be at
work after a brisk 5-minute walk. I really enjoyed
that.
It was about 15 years
later that I experienced
the horror that some
Atlanta drivers go
through every day during
their rush-hour commute.

The boys were oblivious to the situation.
They continued to laugh
and tease each other.
Then they started trying to include me in their
joking. I had to use my
Daddy voice (an octave
lower and very stern)
and say to them, “Look
around. We are flying
down this highway at 90
mph. Look at those crazy

away. If anything goes
wrong, we’re going to be
in the biggest wreck ever.
Sit still. Tighten your
seatbelts and be quiet.”
After a quick look
around, they realized I
wasn’t joking. I could
hear seatbelts being
tightened. It got strangely quiet in the back seat.
It took over an hour of
intense, white-knuckled
driving to get north of
Atlanta. We merged back
onto I-75.
Finally, after several
more tense miles of driving, we were back in the
normal rush of interstate
driving. I told the boys
that we were finally out
of the really bad traffic.
We decided we needed
a rest. So, we pulled over
and had a leisurely diner
at a roadside diner.
I resolved never to
drive in or around Atlanta again. Forty years
later, that’s one resolution I’ve kept.
Next week, I’ll share
some pet peeves about
traffic and whacky drivers we can all identify.

Post 39 faces Pemberville

Bryan Walters | OVP Sports

The 2019 Ohio American Legion State Baseball Tournament begins Wednesday when Meigs Post 39 faces Pemberville Post 183 at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Beavers Field in
Lancaster. The Rangers (17-4) play the opening game of the five-day, double-elimination tournament after going unbeaten in the District 8 tournament held at Beavers
Field roughly one week ago. Post 39 will also play on Thursday, either at 10 a.m. or 4 p.m. — pending on the outcome of its opener against Pemberville Post 183. The
Rangers are only one of eight American Legion baseball teams left playing in Ohio.

Takitaki.
“We have the best of both worlds,
but defense wins championships,” said
defensive end Myles Garrett, the No. 1
overall selection in 2017. “We’ve seen
that many times throughout the years
and it’s never going to change. If they
can’t score the ball and we can, then
we’re going to win every time.”
The defense held its own on the third
day of camp, ending the three-hour, fullpad session with Murray’s pick-6 of backup Drew Stanton. Williams had a pair of
interceptions Friday and the new-look
line appears to be jelling quickly, though
it continues to fly under the radar.
First-year coach Freddie Kitchens and
new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks
have no problem with that side of the
ball being ignored around the NFL. Nor

does Garrett.
“It doesn’t bother me at all because I
don’t mind not getting any attention,”
Garrett explained. “I don’t mind it on
the field, either. If you don’t want to
block me, I’ll be willing to take the sack,
too. I’m not a spotlight kind of guy. The
offense can have all of that.”
Even when the defense wins an 11-on11 play, the offense is often the focal
point. Case in point: Mayfield used very
strong language to chew out his receivers for not extending their routes when
he was flushed out of the pocket.
Starting linebacker Christian Kirksey
felt compelled to yell to the crowd, “That
means the defense is looking good.”
Kitchens plans on keeping the team in
pads indefinitely and will permit tackling to the ground soon. When the latter
occurs, the defense will be a focal point,
whether it likes it or not.
“This time of year in the NFL, you’re
either going to get exposed or you’re
going to get exposure,” Kitchens said.
“Getting exposed means you probably
aren’t going to be here when the calendar turns to September.”

enough fuel to reach the

the win Sunday at Pocono

so much more could be

At 38, Hamlin is having

that is in question, but
Dupree said on Sunday
that he doesn’t mind the

“I’d rather just be like

But joy turned to sorrow when Alaphilippe
and Pinot’s prospects of
becoming France’s first
winner since Hinault in
1985 were cruelly dashed
just two days before the
grand finale in Paris, on
an epic Stage 19 where
Mother Nature became a
party-pooping guest. An
almighty dump of torrential rain and hail severed
the Tour route just as
Bernal was succeeding in
ripping the race lead off
Alaphilippe, who’d clung
to it like a kid with a
favorite toy.
“Julian Alaphilippe
made us dream,” said
Celestin Simon, a Parisian who cheered his hero
on the Champs-Elysees
in a pointy hat of French
red, white and blue.
“Unfortunately, there’s no

Alaphilippe, more than

And it was there that

Bernal flew up the
Tour’s highest climb, the
dizzying Iseran pass at
2,770 meters (9,088-feet)
above sea level, demolishing what remained of Alaphilippe’s lead on Stage
19 and building a sizeable
one of his own .
The watch was then
stopped, with Bernal way
ahead, when the hailstorm suddenly coated
the route with ice, amid
fears that riders on tires
barely wider than their
thumbs could skid off
into the rock- and ravinescarred Alpine décor.
Compounding the
misery for France, Pinot
abandoned the race in
tears, hobbled by a leftthigh muscle tear .
And that was that.
The Tour that had been
careening to a rock ‘n’
roll finish instead had
the plug pulled on it.
Landslides also truncated the last Alpine Stage
20, which still proved
too long for the by-now
exhausted Alaphilippe,
who slipped off the
podium entirely, despite
getting words of encouragement in a call the previous night from French
President Emmanuel
Macron.
Thomas used the last
Alpine climb to secure
the runner-up spot in
Paris, giving the Ineos
team a podium 1-2 with
Bernal. Third-placed
Kruijswijk, a Dutch Mr.

feat of being wholly
unremarkable during the
three weeks, while Alaphilippe, Pinot and Bernal and others rocked.
Quite remarkably,
none of the top four
riders won a stage. Alaphilippe, in fifth, won
two.
“Honestly, I prefer having won two stages and
14 days in yellow than
doing nothing and finishing third,” Alaphilippe
said Sunday.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — What’s
regarded as the NFL’s first game
didn’t involve Lions, Bengals
or Bears. Instead, the Triangles
and Panhandles went at it on an
October afternoon in a triangleshaped park at the confluence of
two rivers.
“They had a way with nicknames back then,” Cincinnati
Bengals owner Mike Brown said.
The NFL returned to the scene
of it first game Saturday — well,
as close as it could get — as part
of its centennial celebration. The
Bengals made the hour-long drive
north and held their first training
camp practice at Welcome Stadium, located 3 miles from Triangle Park. An estimated 7,500 fans
saw a scaled-back workout that
lasted a little more than an hour.
“To come to Dayton and see
fans in their Bengals gear, it’s
definitely heart-warming,” defensive end Carlos Dunlap said.
The practice ended ominously
for the Bengals, who are trying
to escape last place in the AFC
North. Receiver A.J. Green hurt
his left foot or ankle while trying
to make a catch and was carted
off the field. Coach Zac Taylor
had no word about the severity
of the injury. Green was sent for
an exam.
Cincinnati will hold the rest of
its camp at Paul Brown Stadium.

The NFL traces its origins
to the American Professional
Football Association, which was
formed at a meeting in Canton, Ohio in 1920. Jim Thorpe
was president of a league that
encompassed Ohio, Indiana,
New York and Illinois. The first
game between two league teams
was played at Triangle Park on
Oct. 3, 1920, with the Dayton
Triangles beating the Columbus Panhandles 14-0 behind
Lou Partlow’s two touchdown
runs. The Dayton Daily News
described Partlow as the “demon
plunger” who got in shape by
running through woods along the
Great Miami River and ramming
his shoulder into trees.
After more changes to bring
consistency to the game, the
league changed its name to the
National Football League on June
24, 1922, with 18 teams, including Dayton and Columbus.
Last April, the league had
third-day draft picks announced
from the 13 originating cities.
Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley read
some picks from Triangle Park.
As it opens its 100th season,
the NFL wanted “to do something really special in Dayton,”
said Matt Shapiro, a league vice
president. In addition to the Bengals making the trek north, the
league sponsored a youth football

will be donated by the NFL Foundation.
“The Bengals were close to
Dayton, had practiced there
before, so we wanted to bring
it to life in some form,” Shapiro
said. “We thought it would be a
really special day in Dayton to
not only have the Bengals practice at the University of Dayton’s
stadium, but also hold a youth
football clinic.”
The Bengals readily agreed.
“They gave us a chance to put
some emphasis on the fact the
NFL actually began in Dayton,”
Brown said. “We think this is
something people should know.
It’s a great tradition. We want in
some way to just acknowledge
that, to signal this is where it all
started.”
The practice in Dayton also
got the Bengals some national
attention, which is welcomed by
a team coming off three straight
losing seasons and a last-place
finish in the AFC North. Plus,
the trip up Interstate 75 was
nothing new for Cincinnati: The

best years in their contract year. Confidence
is key with yourself and
within your team.”
Dupree entered his
fifth training camp with
the Steelers confident
and a lean 260 pounds.
He’s also healthy, too.
Dupree suffered a torn
pectoral muscle at Denver in November, but
still finished the regular
season, playing in the
final five games, and
registering one sack, as
the Steelers missed the
playoffs for the first time
since 2013.
“It kind of messed
with me, but it was
crunch time,” Dupree
said.
Dupree expects to be
a significant part of the
Steelers defense, which

is expected to make a big
jump to offset the loss of
All-Pros Antonio Brown
and Le’Veon Bell on
offense. He set a career
high six sacks in 2017,
part of a defense that
set a franchise record
and led the NFL with 56
sacks that season.
Another big season
could help the Steelers
again and also translate
into a big payday. But
Dupree isn’t worried
about his contract status
now.
“My biggest thing is
just making the plays
out there,” Dupree said.
“They see everything I
do, they see the progression I’m making. It’s on
me to make sure I finish
and make the big plays
that I need to make.”

Caeleb Dressel sets own
standard with 8 medals
GWANGJU, South
Korea (AP) — Exhaustion and relief flooded
Caeleb Dressel. Maybe
now the comparisons
with Michael Phelps can
fade away.
Dressel won eight medals, including six golds,
at the world swimming
championships, the biggest meet outside the
Olympics. Two years
ago in Hungary, he tied
Phelps’ record of seven
golds at a single worlds,
including three in one
night.
Dressel set his own
standard in Gwangju,
where he again won
three golds in a single
night.
“There’s parts during
the meet where it’s not
the greatest feeling —
the stress that you feel,
the pressure I put on
myself,” he said, adding,
“I do enjoy it, the challenge that it brings.”
On Sunday, Dressel
capped his eight-day run
with silver in the 4x100meter medley relay. He
hauled the U.S. from
fourth to first on his
butterfly leg with a split
of 49.28 seconds — the
only sub-50 second fly
leg in the field.
Had anchor Nathan
Adrian not been overtaken by Britain’s Duncan Scott in the closing

United States’ Caeleb Dressel, left, and Sweden’s Sarah Sjsotrom
pose with their trophies for top male and female swimmers at the
World Swimming Championships on Sunday in Gwangju, South
Korea.

meters, Dressel would
have won a seventh gold.
Adrian and relay teammates Ryan Murphy and
Andrew Wilson were
upset they didn’t deliver.
“I was the first guy in
the water and I would
say I had a pretty embarrassing performance,”
Murphy said. “It kind of
put us in a hole from the
beginning.”
Wilson added, “All of
us are just finding places
where it’s on us. We just
all need to be better and
we will be next year. It’s
frustrating now but it’s
fuel for the next year.”
Heading into its first
Olympics in the postPhelps era, the U.S.
appears in good shape for
Tokyo.
After a slow start in

Gwangju, the Americans
finished with 27 medals
in the pool, including a
leading 14 golds. They
won the team title and
Dressel earned male
swimmer of the meet
honors. The U.S. set five
world records, including
two by 17-year-old backstroker Regan Smith.
Australia was second
with 19 and five golds.
The U.S. likely would
have had two more medals if Katie Ledecky
hadn’t gotten sick. She
withdrew from the 200
free heats and 1,500 free
final while spending two
days away from the pool.
Her lone gold came in the
800 free after a gutsy last
lap in which she pulled
away from Italy’s Simona
Quadarella.
