BIDWELL — Field of Hope
will soon be holding an open
house at 11821 Ohio 160 on
Aug. 26 to celebrate a ribbon
cutting for its Faith House.
The event is slated to start at
noon and is open to the public
with a hog roast and open-fire
beans to share.
US Congressman Bill Johnson
and Ohio State Representative
Ryan Smith are anticipated to
attend the event.
“The Faith House is a
recovery house and a lower
level of treatment from the
Hope House that we have now,”
said Field of Hope CEO Kevin
Dennis. “We’ll be able to move
ladies from the Hope House to
the Field House. Some might
go directly there depending on
their assessment when they
come. We’ll start working with
them to get their life back
together.”
The Field of Hope is an

ongoing community project
with roots in the Vinton Baptist
Church which eventually grew
into its own as a faith-based,
nonprofit organization that
aims to combat addiction and
serve as a community outreach
program. The Field of Hope
campus is centered at the old
North Gallia High School where
ongoing efforts to rehabilitate
the old school building have
also been complemented by the
creation of a women’s recovery
facility, the Hope House, and its
sister building, a less intensive
recovery facility, the Faith
House. The campus seeks to
expand and currently has an
operating counseling program.
“Right now we have 20 ladies
in sober living off-campus, and
except for two who are disabled
physically, they all have either
jobs or are going to Rio Grande
College,” said Dennis.
The CEO said sober living
and recovery housing can
sometimes get a “bad rap.” Field
of Hope aims to continue ties

with its clients and residents in
hopes of continuing to support
them through their journey
rehabilitating from addiction.
“We got about a one and a half
to one client-to-employee ratio,”
said Dennis. “We take the time
and dedicate the people to get
these ladies back on their feet.
That’s why we have such a high
success rate.”
Another 15 residents reside
in the Hope House currently.
Faith House is being prepared to
accept clients from sober living
so they might continue their
journey within the facility.
“It’ll also be a space for when
ladies leave the Hope House,”
said Dennis. “It’s a less intensive
program than Hope House…
The hope is to keep a stronger
relationship with the clients
and it’s easier for them to keep
contact and do follow up…
We’ve got one lady getting her
GED, a driver’s license back, job
schooling, things like that. “

Ohio State’s Dobbins says he’s the best back
COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — Despite running
for 1,053 yards and 10
touchdowns, J.K. Dobbins says last season was
a frustrating personal
failure.
“I didn’t make defenses
fear me as I should,” the
Ohio State tailback said
while vowing to bounce
back in 2019.
After he set a freshman
school rushing record in
2017 with 1,403 yards,
his numbers dropped off
last season. Platooning
with Mike Weber, Dobbins averaged 4.6 yards
per carry, compared with
7.2 per carry the previous

quarterback Dwayne
Haskins Jr. took center
stage.
After logging six 100yard rushing games as a
freshman, he did it just
three times last season
and the Buckeyes’ running game failed to find
consistency.
“I don’t know if he
struggled as much as we
could just do a better
job of calling (plays) up
and putting him in good
places and getting the
blocking a little better,”
offensive coordinator
Kevin Wilson said. “To
me, running is a group
effort, and our group was
good, just not as good as
it needs to be.”

The pieces are falling
into place for a productive year for Dobbins, and
his wide smile is the first
indication.
“I just feel like I’m the
best running back in the
nation, and I want to
prove that,” the 20-yearold junior said. “I didn’t
last year, and I have a
chip on my shoulder
because I know I can do
better.”
He worked out hard in
the offseason to reduce
his body fat by 4% — it’s
now down to 8% — without taking pounds off

Hamlin wins at Bristol
to spoil DiBenedetto’s
upset bid
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — The winner climbed
from his car and immediately apologized for denying an underdog his first career victory. The runner-up, in tears over his near miss, was raucously
embraced by the crowd for his oh-so-close effort.
Bristol Motor Speedway was a bizarre mix of
emotions Saturday night after Denny Hamlin
chased down Matt DiBenedetto to spoil a Saturday night upset. DiBenedetto learned this week
that Leavine Family Racing won’t bring him back
for a second season, and he has no job lined up for
2020.
“I’m so sorry to Matt DiBenedetto, (crew chief)
Mike Wheeler. I hate it. I know what a win would
mean to that team,” Hamlin said as soon as he
exited his car. “But I’ve got to give 110 percent.”
Hamlin was the first Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing driver to start from the pole this season but
his race was a roller-coaster that began when his
car was damaged when he bounced off of Jimmie
Johnson. He later had a loose wheel, fell down a
lap and seemed out of contention for his second
career victory at Bristol.
At the same time, DiBenedetto was working his
way toward the front and put his Toyota out front
for a race-high 93 laps. He needed redemption —
and a win would have put him in the playoffs, no
less — but he again wound up victim to the Gibbs
juggernaut. Gibbs has a logjam of talent, Leavine
is a Gibbs partner, and Gibbs needs DiBenedetto’s
seat next year to promote Christopher Bell from
the Xfinity Series.
“I wanted it to bad,” DiBenedetto said. “I’m sad.
Congrats to Denny, raced hard and I’ve been a fan
of his since I was a kid. To be racing door-to-door
with him at Bristol in front of a great group of fans
— I’m trying not to get emotional but it’s been a
tough week and I just want to stick around and
want to keep doing this for a long time to come. I
am not done yet. Something is going to happen.”
The crowd roared its support as DiBenedetto’s
interview was broadcast on the infield big screen.
Roughly 45 minutes later, DiBenedetto found
Hamlin on the NBC Sports set and interrupted his
interview. The two hugged, and Hamlin pulled

New York Yankees’ second baseman Gleyber Torres (25) drops the ball as Cleveland Indians’ Oscar Mercado (35) slides back to second
on a pickoff-attempt during the first inning Sunday in New York.

Indians tame Yankees, 8-4
NEW YORK (AP) —
Mike Freeman found
out Saturday night he
was going to pick up
a rare start in place of
Cleveland Indians star
infielder José Ramírez.
A couple of hours
before Sunday’s game,
the 32-year-old career
minor leaguer took a
walk out to an empty
Monument Park in Yankee Stadium to check
out the plaques of past
Yankees greats.
Freeman looked like
a star, too, on Sunday
when he hit a three-run
homer and two doubles
as the Indians tamed
the New York Yankees
8-4 for a four-game split
between AL pennant
contenders.
“That’s just baseball
history right there,” said
Freeman, who’s spent
the bulk of his 10-year
professional career in
the minors with five
organizations.
“My grandfather on
my mom’s side was a
huge baseball fan. I
always loved the game
early on and he was
one that would save the
clippings and was a big
fan of the history of the
game. He passed away
many years ago. I think
that’s where I get it
from. I kind of do those
type of things because
I know how much he
would appreciate it and
want to do it,” he said.
Oscar Mercado homered and drove in three

runs and Francisco Lindor also connected for
Cleveland to back Mike
Clevinger (8-2).
Clevinger struck
out 10 in five shutout
innings. He won his seventh straight decision,
limiting New York to
three hits and walking
two.
A day after manager
Aaron Boone, outfielder
Brett Gardner and
pitcher CC Sabathia
were ejected for again
ranting against umpires,
it was a relatively quiet
afternoon.
Miffed by a strike
three call against rookie
Mike Ford, Boone
merely threw his hands
up and walked down the
dugout steps without
saying a word.
Sabathia (5-7) came
off the injured list after
being out with knee tendinitis. He lasted only
three innings, allowing
four runs and four hits
while walking three and
striking out five.
Sabathia, ejected by
umpire Phil Cuzzi the
day before, bickered a
bit with him behind the
plate before Cleveland
scored four times in the
second.
Greg Allen plated the
first run of the game
on a grounder and then
Freeman a drive into the
Yankees bullpen for his
fourth home run.
“Just a little rusty,
but I felt really good,”
Sabathia said.

It was the veteran
lefty’s first start since
July 27. Sabathia is 0-3
in his last five starts,
and hasn’t won a game
since June 24 against
Toronto.
Lindor hit 21st homer
off Nestor Cortes Jr.
in the fourth. Mercado
increased the lead 6-0
with an RBI single in
the sixth and added a
two-run homer, his 10th,
in the eighth to make it
8-2.
New York’s streak of
207 consecutive games
without being shut out
was in danger until DJ
LeMahieu connected a
two-run shot in the seventh. It was his 21st.
The Yankees cut the
deficit to 8-4 on a pair
of run-scoring hits from
LeMahieu and Aaron
Judge off reliever Brad
Hand in the ninth before
he struck out Didi
Gregorius and got Gio
Urshela to fly out to end
it.
Shane Bieber (12-5,
3.27 ERA) continues
Cleveland’s weeklong
visit in New York City
with the start of a threegame set at the Mets on
Tuesday night.
Puig’s pose
Indians star Yasiel
Puig provided a playful
moment by copying
— for a moment —
an unusual batting
stance from the Little
League World Series
that’s getting a lot of

looks. Deivis Ordonez
of Venezuela has
drawn attention for his
exaggerated crouch that
leaves him nearly sitting
down in the batter’s
box. Puig mimicked the
stance in his first at-bat,
then straightened up
before Sabathia threw
the first pitch.
Going batty
Boone said he talked
to Gardner about the
outfielder’s recent habit
of banging the bat
against the dugout roof
to express displeasure
with decisions by
umpires. Gardner was
ejected for doing that
Saturday, and Boone
suggested umps might
be watching him in the
future.
“We’ll try and not
escalate situations,
especially when there’s
some contention,
different than when
we’re rallying or getting
guys excited,” Boone
said.
Boone said he hadn’t
talked to anyone at MLB
about “no, you hard and
fast cannot” do what
Gardner has been doing.
Gardner’s dentdinging routine might be
a new rally symbol for
the team with the best
record in the majors.
When Judge singled in
the third, he looked into
the dugout and imitated
grabbing a bat the
way Gardner did a day
earlier.

Josh McCown already fitting in well with Eagles

From page 1B

to the NFL, Dobbins will be the featured tailback, and he’s bound to get
a ton of carries early as new quarterback Justin Fields figures things out.
With the dual-threat Fields at
quarterback, the offense likely will
look more like it did in 2017 when
J.T. Barrett, always a threat to carry
the ball himself, helped open up
defenses for Dobbins.
“I want to have that responsibility,
the team leaning on me in time of
need,” Dobbins said.
Dobbins also has the extra motivation of knowing that a huge season
and some Heisman Trophy talk
will boost his NFL draft stock if he
decides to leave after this season.
New Buckeyes coach Ryan Day
is counting on Dobbins. Fields
didn’t dazzle in the spring game,
so it remains to be seen how long
it will take him to find his stride.
The offensive line returns just one
full-time starter and may take some
time to jell.
“J.K.’s got to run big for us and
play big for us the first six games,”
Day said. “The offensive line is
going to block, but we’ve talked to
J.K. several times about turning
3-yard carries into 5-yard carries,
and 5-yard carries into 6- and 7-yard
carries, and if he does that the big
plays will come. Last year when he
was going in and out with Mike, I
think sometimes he was looking for
the home run. This year in those
first six games he’s got to get his
pads down and play veteran for us.”
Ohio State is still looking for one
or two backups to emerge. Master
Teague, a redshirt freshman, looked
like a good option but an injury
has kept him out practice. Day said
redshirt junior Demario McCall,
who has been used as an H-back,
and freshmen Marcus Crowley and
Steele Chambers are contenders.
Dobbins said he is prepared to
carry the load. Another 1,000-yard
season would put him good company: Two-time Heisman winner
Archie Griffin is the only other
Buckeye to top 1,000 yards in three
straight seasons.
“I feel,” he said, “like everything
is coming together at the right
time.”

as an NFL analyst on ESPN
when the Eagles called Friday
with an offer he couldn’t turn
down. He signed a $2 million,
one-year deal that could be
worth up to $5.4 million.
McCown provides insur-

ance behind Carson Wentz,
who has finished the past
two seasons on the sideline
because of injuries. The
Eagles already lost two
quarterbacks in the first
two preseason games. Nate
Sudfeld broke his left wrist
and is expected to return in
September. Cody Kessler
left Thursday night’s game
with a head injury. Rookie
Clayton Thorson was the only
healthy quarterback on the
roster behind Wentz before
McCown ended his brief
retirement.
“It was good for me to
spend a great amount of
time with my family and go
through an offseason where
I wasn’t traveling and having
to go back and forth from a
city doing OTAs and stuff like
that, so that was beneficial for
me,” McCown said Sunday.

“There were only a certain
number of teams I think I
would be interested in and
that met the criteria I talked
about, and this was certainly
one of them. It was cool when
this opportunity came up and
we started to talk about it as
a family. They were excited,
and they were like, ‘Man, you
gotta go.’”
McCown was 23-53 as a
starter, including 5-11 with
the New York Jets over the
past two seasons. He has
completed 60.2% of his
passes, has thrown 98 touchdowns and 82 interceptions
and has a 79.7 passer rating.
McCown’s best season
came in 2013 with Chicago.
He was 3-2 as a starter and
completed 66.5% of his
passes for 1,829 yards, 13
TDs and only one pick with a
passer rating of 109.

trying to make the playoffs.
Newman refused to give an
inch as DiBenedetto tried
to put him down a lap, and
contact between the two cars
caused DiBenedetto’s Toyota to tighten up as Hamlin
closed the gap.
A DiBenedetto victory
would have dramatically
changed the playoff picture.
There are two races remaining to set the 16-driver field
and only nine drivers have
locked in their spots. With
seven open, a first-time winner would have grabbed a
coveted spot.
Johnson has never missed
the playoffs since the format
began in 2004 but the seventime champion dropped to
18th in points after a disappointing night at Bristol.
Clint Bowyer also dropped
out of the top-16, but is only
two points behind the final
slot, now held by teammate
Daniel Suarez.
THE REST OF THE

FIELD: Brad Keselowski finished third in a Ford, and was
followed by Gibbs driver Kyle
Busch, who came from 31st
to finish fourth. He received
thunderous boos during
driver introductions, but the
eight-time Bristol winner
simply guzzled something
from a red plastic cup and
thanked the fans for coming.
Chase Elliott was fifth
and the highest-finishing
Chevrolet. Kyle Larson was
sixth, followed by Bowyer
and Suarez, who moved
ahead of Bowyer in the
standings via stage points.
Kurt Busch and Ryan
Blaney rounded out the top
10.
UP NEXT: The Cup Series
is off next weekend and
returns to competition Sept.
1 at Darlington Raceway.
NBC Sports expects Dale
Earnhardt Jr. back in the
booth for that event after he
skipped Bristol following a
crash landing of his airplane
Thursday near the track.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —
Josh McCown was talking
to reporters when Alshon
Jeffery stepped up on a chair,
hit record on his phone and
asked the newest Philadelphia
Eagles quarterback a question.
“How’s No. 17 as a basketball player?” Jeffery inquired.
McCown, who played a lot
of hoops with Jeffery when
they were teammates on the
Chicago Bears, gave his best
evaluation.
“He’s not bad. He’s got
some skills, but I can lock him
down if it was one-on-one,”
McCown replied, adding he
chose to wear No. 18 on the
Eagles so he could stand next
to Jeffery in team pictures.

Popovich faces tough numbers game for World Cup
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)
— When Gregg Popovich
was cut from the 1972
U.S. Olympic basketball
roster, those making the
decision took the easiest
way out.
They posted a note.
“Clueless people,”
Popovich said, 47 years
later, grinning to at least
try to suggest it doesn’t
still bother him too much.
It’ll soon be time for
Popovich to walk in those
same decision-making
shoes, when he has to
pare USA Basketball’s
roster from 13 players to
12 in time for the FIBA
World Cup this month.

All 13 remaining hopefuls were on the team
plane Saturday to Australia. So when the last
cut gets made — expect
it about Aug. 27, unless
injuries happen — a guy
will see his gold-medal
hopes come to a quick
end.
And no, Popovich is not
looking forward to this.
“When you cut people
from your regular NBA
team, it’s difficult,” said
Popovich, USA Basketball’s men’s national
coach. “We’re going to
have to do that. And it’s
going to be even more so.
I’m dreading having to

do that. But it’s got to get
done.”
There have been more
than 50 NBA players
linked to this World Cup
team at some point in the
last year or so, most of
them dropping out of consideration on their own,
citing schedule demands
or concerns.
A few others were
eliminated after injuries.
Only two to this point —
Miami’s Bam Adebayo
and Chicago’s Thaddeus
Young — were actually
cut, those moves coming after the first week
of training camp in Las
Vegas. It would have been

14 players going to Australia, but Sacramento’s
De’Aaron Fox decided
Saturday to leave the
team.
So there’s one cut left.
It will be downright
brutal.
“It just means that guys
are doing their jobs,” Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton
said. “We’re making it
as tough as it can be on
them. I think guys have
been great all camp, just
being positive, bringing
energy and playing as
hard as they can, giving
their body up for everybody else. So that’s a huge
thing for everybody.”

Miscellaneous

It would seem like there
are a handful of locks to
make the team: Kemba
Walker, Donovan Mitchell, Harrison Barnes,
Mason Plumlee, Myles
Turner and Middleton.
They were starters Friday
night against Spain —
Plumlee started the first
half, Turner the second,
with the U.S. still mixing
and matching.
Jayson Tatum played
more minutes than
nearly everyone Friday.
Joe Harris — the NBA’s
best 3-point shooter last
season — should be on
this team based on the
importance of shooting
