Church's identity crisis
Far be it from me to '
sound cynical or pes
simist1~, yet I cannot help
but conclude that an
ever-increasing number
of m; fellmv Americans
h:n e lowered the proYer
bial "bar" of their lives.
In other words. instead of
their striving to be, or to
do, the best they can,
they have as:-umed for
themselves a less-thanstellar and, worse. a
mediocre standard of living.
Maybe the preceding
statement has raised a
few hackles among those
1'cadm~ this. Some may
be saymg the economy i<>
to blame for many of the
problems in America
today.
Others are inclined to
blame either our last
President, or the current
one. for those who are so
inclined, it's always
-;omebody else's fault,
and any ··~capcgoat" will
do. So long as such a·
scapegoat can be identified. one's problems can
be blamed on that other

Thomas Johnson
per'>on or thing
Sad to say. but say it I
must. scapc-goating has
become another great
American past time. The
corollary of these individual and corporate acts
of "passing the buck"•is
that no one ha~ to assume
the responsibtlity for his.
her, or their a~tions.
To paraphrase the old
Virginia Slims cigarette
adverti..;ement - ''We've
come a long way, Baby!"
I, for one. refuse to
accept that where we are
either as a
today
nation or a~ the Church

- is something of which
we ought to be proud, or
for which we ought to be
commended.
As
someone
has
remarked ... "Today there
is too much of the world
to be found within the
Church. and too little of
the Church to be found in
the world."
In a very real sense,
today's Church suffers
from an "identity crisis"
because of those in the
world whose opposition
to the Gospel now suggests to the Church it
ought to adjust and adapt
its message and mission.
(The expression "tone it
down" is entirely apropos.)
I've heard it said the
Church has abdicated its
God-appointed role in
the world- i.e., to make
the
world-as-a-whole
aware of Jesus Christ.
Nevertheless. the number
one affliction among
churches today isn't so
much the "woodpeckers''
on the outside attempting
to batter their way in. as

it is the "termites" gnawing away and corrupting
these entities from within.
Too few Christians arc
stepping up to the plate
for Christ's sake, in part
because they themselves
don't necessarily understand what they're supposed to be doing There
is also the possibility
somebody else is trying
to hide the "plate" - i.e.,
to obscure the message of
the Gospel, if not the
advocacy role of the
Church as Christ's representative in and to the
world.
It has been my experience in every church I've
served that among the
members of that body
there exists a coterie of
individuals more oriented to the ways of the
world than to the Way of
the Word. Such people
are wont to appease. visa-vis confront and challenge society.
As a general rule,
appeasement is a lopsided venture, a "win-

lose'' scenario whereby New<;, as God

Understand what God's Learn to Win, Part 1

One of the Psalmists
wrote that he cried to
God for deliverance
from

the conte-xt of his

"I waited patiently on
the Lord.''
Most

People
admittedly
have a mo t dt1hcult

One of the greatest
weapons we have against
the enemy is the presence
of God. With God on our
side, who can be against
us'! There is a sense of
protection and peace that
permeates our hearts
when we know for certain that God is with us.
He has promised to never
leave or forsake us.
A couple of weeks ago
we finished the series of
David and Goliath. We
talked about how the battie between David and
Goliath was not a battle
of swords,· spears and
punches - but rather, a
battle of Wonls.
The enemy has used
the same tactic since day
one. The enemy realizes
that Words world Words
make or break a person,
businesses, contracts and
relationships. Words!
You see, words are premeditated
thought:..
Words are pre-painted pict~re~. Words are the comptlattons of ~hought<i that
see sornethmg already
accomplished. And Words
will dnve you to a place of
decision. Words! Simply
Words. Not pictures. Not
figurines. Not things. but
words.
It isn't the picture of a
hamburger that make.s
you hungry a.~ much as 1t
IS the mUSIC and the ·
words they use to Jure
you to buy one. that does
a number on you. But
even the picture of a
burger is a drdwing of
completed words and
execu~ed t!Joughts:
It IS tmperattve to
know that our enemy the
adversary knows that
words work. This is why
every battle you see in
the Bible and even the
battles you fight, are batties of words. I can
assure you that most of
your battles are battles of
words because words
create contracts. And
words are contracts in

heavenly
places.
Therefore, when you say
that you have had · a
headache for three days
straight
and
you're
aggravated and sick of it,
you have begun the
process of defeat over
your life.
This is when the enemy
goes to work and begins
to build on his operation
against you because your
words have just given
him permission or the
right-away.
Therefore, it is important to know that we're
not in a battle where we
must "fight'' day in and
day out. Our battle is not
against flesh and blood,
but against powers in
high dark places. This is
why to argue with somebody or complain about
something is always <1
loosing battle.
We must understand
that since our real battle
is not against man. but
with demonic forces
most of the time then we
must learn how to win
instead of how to fight.
Therefore, fight the
good fight of faith and
Jearn how to win. Next
week we' II talk about
learning how to win versus ::.imply fighting.
Make it a great week! •
