two of the group’s three donation boxes placed at

money was taken from them sometime over the

time Hess has been convicted of sexual offenses,
having previously been
convicted or having
pleaded guilty to charges
of gross sexual imposition
in 1991 and 2009.
Given his previous
offenses, the grand jury
indictment included a
sexually violent predator specification, which
increased the possible
sentence on the gross sexual imposition charges.
Judge Linda Warner
ruled on Friday regarding
the sexually violent predator specification after testimony during a hearing
was held on Wednesday.
During the hearing
three females testified
that Hess had also allegedly committed sexual
acts with them when they
were minors, although the
alleged acts were never
reported or charged.
Both defense attorney
Britt Wiseman and Prosecutor James K. Stanley
were to submit closing
arguments in writing on
Thursday, with Warner
issuing the ruling on
Friday.
“The Defendant committed sexually violent
acts against the victim
in this case in 2013 and
the Court finds that he is
likely to engage in at least
one or more sexually violent offense in the future.
Therefore, defendant is
found to be a sexually violent predator,” read the
entry by Warner.
With the ruling in
place, sentencing arguments were held on Monday afternoon.
Prosecutor Stanley
argued that Hess should
receive the maximum
possible sentence, with
the sentences to run consecutive to one another.
Stanley argued that the
sentence was necessary
to protect the public and
to punish the offender.
Stanley said that Hess
has shown a pattern of
offenses against children,
and that he was out of
prison on judicial release
for less than six months
at the time of the offenses
in the current case.
He added that Hess has
shown no remorse for the
actions which caused serious psychological harm to
the victim in the case.

Boeing ousts CEO after deadly crashes
By Cathy Bussewitz
and David Koenig
AP Business Writers

NEW YORK — Boeing ousted CEO Dennis
Muilenburg on Monday
with no end in sight
to the crisis that has
engulfed the vaunted
American aircraft
manufacturer since the
crash of two of its 737
Max airliners.
The Boeing board
had supported Muilenburg for months despite
calls for his resignation
from lawmakers and
relatives of the passengers killed. When it
became clear in recent
days that federal regulators would not certify
the grounded Max to
fly again by year’s end
as Muilenburg had
hoped, the board finally
abandoned him.
Board members
decided to remove
him on a conference
call Sunday, according
to a person familiar
with the events who
discussed the private
deliberations on condition of anonymity.
The move came after
another bad week for
Boeing. The aerospace
giant had announced
it would temporarily
halt production of the
Max because it wasn’t
clear when it could
deliver the planes. And
Boeing’s new Starliner
space capsule went
off course during a
bungled, unmanned

test flight to the International Space Station.
The company said
Muilenburg departed
immediately and its
current chairman,
David Calhoun, will
take over as CEO on
Jan. 13.
Boeing said it
decided it needed new
leadership to regain
the confidence of regulators. The company
— which has been criticized over the design of
the Max, Boeing’s failure to tell pilots about
a new flight-control
system on the plane,
and its handling of the
crisis after the first
crash — promised a
“renewed commitment
to full transparency.”
Boeing declined to
make Calhoun or other
executives available for
comment.
Muilenburg had been

CEO since mid-2015.
The company’s stock
soared during most of
his tenure, as Boeing
benefited from strong
demand for new planes
to meet the growing
demand for travel
around the world.
Boeing began designing the Max in 2011
to compete with a new
plane from Airbus that
was cutting into sales
of Boeing’s venerable
737. Critics, including
members of Congress,
say that Boeing, with
the Federal Aviation
Administration’s help,
rushed the plane into
production and minimized safety risks.
In October 2018, a
brand-new Max operated by Indonesia’s Lion
Air crashed into the
sea near Jakarta. Five
months later, in March,
an Ethiopian Airlines

Max went down shortly
after takeoff from
Addis Ababa. All 346
people aboard the two
planes were killed.
Muilenburg was
faulted for Boeing’s
initial response to the
accidents, when he and
the company seemed
to blame the foreign
pilots. Criticism of
Muilenburg grew in
recent months as news
reports and congressional investigations
disclosed internal Boeing documents that
revealed concern within the company about
key design features on
the Max, especially the
new automated MCAS
flight-control system
that investigators say
played a role in the two
crashes.
A faulty sensor
caused the system to
activate before the
two disasters, pushing
down the nose of both
planes. Boeing had not
told pilots about MCAS
until after the Lion Air
crash, and regulators
at the FAA didn’t know
much about it either.
Earlier this month,
the House Transportation Committee disclosed an internal FAA
analysis made after the
first crash, which estimated that there would
be 15 more fatal crashes over 45 years until
Boeing fixed MCAS.
Yet the FAA did not
ground the plane until
the second crash.

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — It’s tough to guard
them all.
The Meigs girls basketball team fell to Tug
Valley by a 62-36 count in non-conference
play on Saturday at the Wood Lumber Classic
at Newt Oliver Arena on the campus of Rio
Grande, with a quartet of Lady Panthers scoring
in double digits in the win.
Meigs (2-7) trailed the TVHS 20-8 eight minutes into play, with MHS sophomore Mallory
Hawley accounting for all of the Lady Marauders’ opening-quarter points.
A 19-to-8 second period gave Tug Valley a
39-16 halftime lead. The Lady Panthers added
one to their advantage in the third quarter, outscoring MHS 12-to-11 to make the score 51-27
headed into the finale.
The Black and Silver closed the 62-36 victory
with an 11-to-9 fourth quarter, with Hawley
scoring all-9 of Meigs’ points in the period.
First-year Lady Marauders head coach Heath
Hudson acknowledged that his club was facing
a tall task, especially with less than half of its
starting lineup, but was proud of his younger
players stepping up to the challenge.
“We have three starters who are on vacation
for the holidays,” Hudson said. “Tug Valley is a
very well-coached team that will go far in their
region again this year. I’m proud of the younger
girls who stepped up and gave a great effort,
it was a good learning game for them. I’m sure
that this experience will pay off for them in the
years to come.”
The Maroon and Gold made 6-of-8 (75 percent) free throws in the game, while the victors
made 9-of-15 (60 percent).
Hawley led the Lady Marauders with 29
points on the strength of a dozen field goals.
Rylee Lisle scored four points for MHS, while
Mara Hall added three.
Makayla May led Tug Valley with 18 points.
Kaylea Baisden was next with 12 points, followed by Brooklyn Evans with 11 and Alyssa
Newsome with 10. Autumn Hall tallied eight
points in the win, Haley Gillman added two,
while Audrey Evans came up with one marker.

ASHTON, W.Va. — A little too much to overcome
down the stretch.
Visiting Rose Hill Christian made a 27-23 second
half run and ultimately handed the Hannan girls
basketball team its second straight setback Friday
night during a 50-45 non-conference decision in
Mason County.
The Lady Cats (1-3) found themselves in a 13-8
hole after one quarter of play, but the hosts countered with seven points from Julie Frazier as part of
a 14-10 run that closed the halftime deficit down to
a single point at 23-22.
Bellamee Sparks hit two trifectas as part of a
12-10 RHCS run in the third canto that increased
the lead to 35-32.
Despite eight points from Frazier down the
stretch, the guests still closed regulation with a
15-13 spurt that completed the 2-possession outcome.
Hannan made 16 total field goals — including
three 3-pointers — and also went 10-of-17 at the
free throw line for 59 percent.
Frazier led the hosts with a game-high 21 points,
followed by Halie Johnson with nine points and
Bailey Coleman with eight markers. Rachel Ellis
and Madison Plantz completed the HHS tally with
