POMEROY — The recent heavy
rains and the high water from the
Ohio River have caused new damages
to the Pomeroy Walking Path, heightened concerns regarding the Pomeroy
Parking Lot, and have worsened a hill
slippage near a local business.
Code Enforcement Officer Alan
Miles reported there are two major
spots of the Pomeroy Walking Path
that have been damaged, one being an
area that has been suffering erosion
damage for some time and the other
being an area with a culvert which
acts an exhaust for street water.
Mayor Don Anderson commented,

Karr said there are no
major damages to her
store because when she

said Karr.
Karr said she is projecting to have the Hartwell

Paige Cleek owner of

Cleek shared that she

Cleek commented she

Rio men close
season with
loss to Carlow
By Randy Payton
For Ohio Valley Publishing

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Perhaps, given the way
that many of their previous 29 outings had turned
out, the University of Rio Grande men’s basketball
team shouldn’t have been taken by surprise with
the way Saturday afternoon’s regular season finale
against Carlow University played out.
Still, it didn’t make another narrow loss any
easier on the RedStorm.
The host Celtics trailed for much of the first
half, but grabbed a lead just before halftime and
held on down the stretch for a 76-70 Senior Day
win at Oakland Catholic High School’s Donahue
Pavilion.
Carlow, which suffered a 32-point loss at Rio in
early December, improved to 6-20 overall and 6-11
in league play with the victory.
The win also secured the No. 4 seed from RSC’s
East Division and gave the fourth-year program its
first post-season tournament berth.
The Celtics will face West Division champion
Indiana University Southeast in the quarterfinal
round of the RSC Tournament on Wednesday, at
7:30 p.m., at the Student Activities Center in New
Albany, Ind.
Rio Grande, which lost for the eight time in nine
outings, finished its season at 10-20 overall and
5-12 in the RSC.
“Today was one of those days where it just
wasn’t meant to be,” said Rio head coach Ken
French. “They made some plays that we didn’t.
They hit their free throws down the stretch. Give
them credit - today, they were the better team.”
The RedStorm led by as many as five points on
three different occasions in the first half, including
30-25 after a bucket by sophomore Greg Wallace
(Montego Bay, Jamaica) with 4:25 remaining
before halftime.
Carlow rallied, though, scoring 11 of the final 13
points in the half to take a 36-32 advantage at the
intermission.
Rio grabbed the lead back twice in the first
four minutes of the second half - 39-38 following
a jumper by senior Will Hill (Worthington, OH)
with 17:27 left to play and 41-40 after freshman
Jaxon Burgess (Louisville, KY) hit one of two free
throws with 16:18 remaining - but a layup by Jamil
Tarver on the Celtics’ ensuing possession following the Burgess free throw put the home team in

Rio softball falls to Rams, nips Knights Rio women
rally back to
beat Celtics
By Randy Payton

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Kelsey
Conkey tossed a complete game
three-hitter and the University of
Rio Grande rallied late to post a
2-1 win over Thomas University,
Saturday night, in the finale of the
Thomas University Softball Classic
at Thomas County Central High
School’s Jackets Field.
The victory came on the heels of
a 6-5 loss to 19th-ranked University of Mobile (Ala.) earlier in the
day and left the RedStorm - who
are ranked No. 23 - at 3-3 for the
season.
Thomas suffered its first loss in
eight outings.
Conkey, a junior from Minford,
Ohio, scattered three singles and
walked one while striking out six
in the winning effort.
All of the hits came in the
fourth inning when the Night
Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead. Victoria
Camina led off with a single, stole
second second, moved to third on a
infield single by Kaitlyn Stoltz and
scored on a two-out hit by Kelsey
Connolly.
That’s how things stayed until
the home half of the sixth inning
when Rio sophomore Michaela
Criner (Bremen, OH) hit a one-out
home run to knot the score at 1-1.
One out later, Conkey singled
to left and senior Mallory Powell
(Flatwoods, KY) followed with an
RBI double to send the RedStorm
in front.
Conkey retired the side in order
in the seventh to seal the win.

come-from-behind win over previously-unbeaten Thomas University.

the loss for Thomas.
In the opener against Mobile, the
RedStorm scored four times in the
fifth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit,
but the Rams got three of the runs
back in the bottom of the frame
and then survived one last Rio
comeback in the seventh.
Criner drove in the first Rio run
in the fifth with an infield single,
while Conkey delivered a threerun double to put the RedStorm in
front.
Conkey also had a two-out RBI
double in the seventh inning to
pull Rio within a run, but Mobile’s
Hope Cain fanned Powell to end
the game.
Freshman Mary Pica (Minford,
OH) had two hits, including a double, for the RedStorm while fellow

frosh Aubrey Azbill (Miamisburg,
OH) - the second of three pitchers suffered the loss.
Maegan Walding finished 4-for4 to lead the Rams’ 14-hit attack,
while Destinee Cole, Kaitlyn Wood
and Savannah Woodruff all had two
hits each. Wood, who had a double
among her two hits, also added
two RBI.
Ashley Sprayberry also doubled
and drove in one run for Mobile.
Rio Grande returns to action
next weekend in Hardeeville, S.C.
where it will face the University
of South Carolina-Beaufort in
a doubleheader on Friday and
Coastal Georgia in a twin bill next
Saturday.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — It’s been said that nothing worth having comes easy.
For the University of Rio Grande women’s
basketball team, the adage applied to the squad’s
quest for a 27th win in its regular season finale.
The RedStorm rallied from a 10-point second
quarter deficit, opening up a 16-point lead of their
own in the final period before settling on a 76-64
triumph over Carlow University, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference action at Oakland Catholic High School’s Donahue Pavilion.
Rio, ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA Division
II Coaches’ Poll, improved to 27-3 overall and 15-2
in the RSC with the victory.
Carlow saw its season finish at 10-16 overall and
5-12 in league play.
The Celtics spotted their guests the game’s first
four points, but then proceeded to reel off seven
straight points of their own to grab a lead which
held until the midway point of the third quarter.
Carlow’s cushion reached as many as 10 points,
22-12, after a turnaround jumper in the lane by
Emma Stille with 8:17 left in the first half and
stood at 33-28 by the time halftime rolled around.
Rio Grande, which shot just 29.4 percent (10for-34) while committing 12 turnovers in the first
half, turned their fortunes around after the break.
The RedStorm shot 62 percent over the final
two stanzas (18-for-29) and regained the lead,
39-37, following a jumper by junior Jasmine Smith
(Canal Winchester, OH) with 4:29 remaining in
the third period.
The lead stood at just four points, 57-53, after
a pair of free throws by Carlow’s Noelle Vallimont
with 5:55 left in the game, but Rio went on a
13-2 run over the next 3-1/2 minutes to open up a
15-point lead with 2:25 remaining and secure the
victory once and for all.
The RedStorm’s biggest lead of the contest
came with 1:25 left when freshman Chyna Chambers (Columbus, OH) hit one of two free throws to
make it 73-57.
Eleven of the 12 Rio players in uniform scored at
least two points in the win, with Smith’s 16-point,
three-steal effort leading the way.
Sophomore Sydney Holden (Wheelersburg, OH)
added 14 points and 12 rebounds in the winning
effort, while sophomore Abby Wendel (Portland,
IN) had a game-high five assists.
The RedStorm finished with a 40-37 edge in
rebounding, helping to offset its 23 turnovers and
15-for-25 performance at the free throw line.
Alexis Yanief led a trio of double-digit scorers
for Carlow with 14 points, while Stille had 13
points and a dozen rebounds and Chanel Sparks
tallied 11 points and nine rebounds.
Yanief also had a game-high four steals and
Sparks a team-high three assists in a losing cause
for the Celtics.
Rio Grande will return to action on Wednesday
night when it hosts Brescia University - the No. 4
seed out of the RSC’s West Division - in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Randy Payton is the Sports Information Director for the University of
Rio Grande.

Team LeBron edges
Team Stephen 148-145
in All-Star Game
LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James picked a
winner in the NBA All-Star Game.
James scored 29 points and hit the go-ahead
layup with 34.5 seconds to play, winning his third
All-Star Game MVP award while his hand-picked
team rallied to win an uncommonly entertaining
showcase, beating Team Stephen 148-145 Sunday
night.
For the first time in the 67 editions of the AllStar Game, the league abandoned the traditional
East-West format used since 1951 and allowed
team captains James and Stephen Curry to choose
their own rosters.
That twist turned a sometimes staid event into
the world’s richest pickup game, and the intrigue
was reflected on the Staples Center court, where a
real basketball game broke out.
LeBron’s team even won an All-Star game with
defense: On the final possession, James and Kevin
Durant blanketed Curry, preventing the 3-pointshooting superstar from getting off a potential
tying shot.
“I think myself and Stephen took it upon ourselves when we took on this format that we had to
change the way this game was played,” said James,
who also had 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Both teams played defense for long stretches
and contested many shots, with LeBron’s group
even picking up full-court late in the first half.
Team LeBron also rallied from a double-digit
deficit in the final minutes, tying it at 144-144 on
James’ 3-pointer with 1:31 to play.
LA native DeMar DeRozan hit one free throw
to put Team Steph ahead, but LeBron claimed the
lead with his layup after some sharp passing by his
