on Monday.
While it was always
viewed as a winnable game
for the Lady Raiders, who are
much better than their 4-13
record - not many expected
such a lopsided outcome. . .
What was even more unexpected, ·though, is River·
Valley's nell! opponent. ·
Nelsonville-York, whtch won
just once · during the regular
season, upset thirdcseeded
Alexander 4-3, also on
Monday.
That _means River Valley
will play host to NelsonvilleYork 5 p.m. Friday · with a
sectional championship and
trip to the district tourriiunent
on the line.
River Valley pitcher Kari
McFann scattered six hits,
struck ·out sill and walked
only one .in picking up the
complete game victory and
helping her club end a sixgame losing .'skid. Her counterpart, Carrie Meredith, didn' t fare as well.
· Meredith struggled with
her control and Belpre pitch'

day. The Lady Raiders capitahzed on the free passes and
milled in seven htts to fuel
the 20-run explosion.
Belpre was missing its

the Ming dynasty, and may
be those of eunuchs serving
at the imperial court, the
Beijing Morning Post said . .

imperial and other capitals
for more than 1,000 years;
and many major building
projects unearth gravesites or
relics. Most are removed or
destroyed before experts can
examine them.

Beijing Olympic organizers,

Zhu Iing, said the find
accounted for only a small
part of the construction site
and "shouldn't affect tl\e ·
work too seriously."
"We'll let everyone know
if there is a major discovery,"
Zhu said.
An official of the Beijing
Cultural Relics Department,
Liu Baoshan, declined to
give an age for the tombs and
said no detai,ls would be
released until a final report is
drawn up.
Archaeologists have found
coins, ceramics and jade in
the tombs at the shooting
range on the Chinese capital's western outskirts, the
Post and other papers said. '

Look only at "the North hand. What would
you respond if partner opens one spade?
Whal would you re bid, if. anything, after
partner opens one heart, you respond
one spade, and he rebids two hearts?
Your hand started as a 1Q-pointer, which
is usually just eno ugh to invite game. If
partner opens one spade, though, your
hand is wonh a game-forcel If you com~ ·
bine high-card points with shortage
points, you have 13: 10 honor points, arJd
threEfdistribution points for your singleton
heart. if you prefer, Uke me. to count los- .
ers, you have seven: two spades, one
heart, one diamond an.d three clubs.
Partner is assumed to have seven losers
for his opening bid. Seven pius seven
subtracted from 24 gives 10 , tho nurrber
of tricks you ought to be able to Win. What
do you bid? That depends on your partnership agreements. I would jump to lour
hearts, a splinter bid showing the values
for game with at most one heprt. But
mavt>e you bid two no-trump , Jacoby
Forcing Raise; or three no-trump, Hthat is
your partnership's artificial major-suit
game-lorce.
OppOsite a partner bidding hearts twice,
!hough, you should pass. Do not look lor
. thin galiies with a misfit.
Against two hearts, West leads the diamond jack: queen, ace, two. East returns
the diamond seven to dummy's king. You
have four side-suit losers, so can af1ord
only one trump loser. What is the best
play !here?
,
it is besllo play - slop pee~ngi - low
to the queen. This gains over low to the
10 when East has king-third or kingfourth, and loses when East has jackthird, which Is less likely.
