What NASA has to do to
ge't smarter, Muratore said , is
to stop relying on computer
models and start flying the
space shuttle again.
Discovery is scheduled to
blast off in mi'd-May on the .
tirst shuttle flight since the
Columbia disaster on Feb. I,
2003. NASA plans to move
the spacecraft to the launch .
pad Wednesday.
NASA will fly live types of
repair kits aboard Discovery ·
for the astronauts to test in
space, but the' rudimentary
patches will accommodate
holes no bigger than 4 inches.
The gash that brought down
Columbia was an estimated 6 ·
inches to I0 inches in size.
Stev,e Poulos Jr. , a shuttle
prpject manager, said a repair
kit to fix that big of a hole
should be available in two
years.

Dissatisfied NRC plans close monitoring of Ohio nuclear plant

Operations at the. Perry

·
The plant was shut down

FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse

An annual assessment by
the Nuclear .Regulatory
Commission stressed that the
Perry plant continues to oper·

problems over several· years
prompted the agency to gradually step up inspections and

Recurring equipment prob!ems, human . performance

"This is a really impor:tant
