" I know I'd get booed," she says of graduation. The school resource oftlcer from the local · police department in San Rafael tried to assure her he'd eject anyone who booed. "But I'll still have heard it," says Savage, who recently turned 18. 'Til know everybody's hating me as I'm walking across the stage." Savage accused three classmates at San Rafael High of sexually assaulting her after a house. party on Jan . 15. One was on the baseball team. One on the basketball team . All three were in the popular crowd. Savage wasn't . She is the kind of girl who gets good grades and dresses a little eccentrically and can be abrupt when she's annoyed . She went .to .parttes on the weekends W"i th her friends , . had a couple of boyfnends over the years, and had planned to go to beauty school instead of college, at . least for a couple of years. 'T ve known her for years through sports," says police oftleer J:larry Rarbjer., who for I 0 years has patrolled San Rafael's school campuses. "'She's a very credible young lady.' Intelligent. Has her feet on the ground." Joan Ryan . No matter. After word spread across campus that she went to the police, she became an outcast. She was a liar. a slut. a wannabe. She was hounded by classmates, threatened and harassed and ostracized, blamed for ruinin g the lives of three well-liked boys. She is talking to me because she says people ought to know what happens to girls who tell. They. should know why so few come forward. What good does it do? You end up being hated and leaving school , and the boys stick around . popular as ever. mak ing you sound like a pathetic nutcase lookmg for revenge or attention or who knows what. The boys spent more than 50 days at Marin County's juvenile hall awaiting trial. In the midst of the trial. after SavagMestilied for six hours against them, they agreed to a plea. Two of the boys pled to felony sexual battery, the third to a misdemeanor of aidi ng and · abetting sexual battery. Their pleas got them released from juvenile hall. Within hours of thei[.relea'e on April I. they showed up on the hi gh sc~ool campu>. They continue to show up periodically on campus to pi ck up a•>ignment' for their mdependent study progr~ms. Four days after the boys' release, feann g for her safety after hearing mmors of rclaliation. Savage left school for good. She is now living w1th an old college fri end of her mother, fini shing up courses in advancedplacement English and governmenl. The boys' dispositions the juvenile equivalent of se ntences - are scheduled for la te r this month. They are likely to be given probation, co unseling and possibly house arrest .
