I wa> appalku to t ~au in last Ft·iduy's paper (April 15) thai
Ohio election boards "re going to again use Diebold Voting
Machines.
I believe. '" do many others., that the countless election
irregulanties in Ohio. during the 2004 Presidential election,
were not isolated· "glitches ... but a peek at the visible results
of lar£elv hidden electronic fraud :
Wafi y ·o· Dell, CEO of Diebold Voting machines, publicly
stated that he w"s com mitted to delivering Ohio 's electoral
votes !O the President.
Four corporations connected to the Bush administration
manufacture all the voting machin<:s, a dear contlict of interest. Arid .the software used to control the counting and reponing of votes is withheld from public scrutiny.
Everyone remembers the 2000 fiasco when the Supreme
Court stopped rhe recount and awarded the presidency to
George W. Bush.
But m;iny may not be aware of increasing evidence of tampered results in the 2004· presidential election.
Bush reportedly won the election by 2.5 percent, while the
exit poll s showed Kerry winning by 3 percent.
A panel of statisticians found that the odds of such a discrepancy between the exit polls and the results occurring nat. urally were close to a million to one.
In other words, it couldn't have happened.
Experts using voting machines demo.nstrated for Congress
how a lone hacker could skew a precinct's results by 100.000·
votes without leaving a trace.
Then, there is the complicated story of Florida computer
programmer Clint Curtis, who recently passed a lie-detector
test on his C) aim that he was asked by Rep. Tom Feeney, ·RFL, a Bush family friend, to design an undetectable program
for !lipping touch-screen votes, which he did.
.
Brad Friedman first reponed the Clint Curtis story at
http://www.bradblog.com/CiintCurtisSummary.htm, . but a
few newspapers in Florida. including The Seminole
Chronicle, Oviedo Voice, St. Petersburg Times, and New
·Times Broward Palm-Beach. also picked it up.
The sins of the Bush administration are many, but the most
damaging likely is the loss of confidence in the integrity of ·
our elections.

These days it's common to
hear that "conservative" or
"pro- life" policy toward
stem cell s is a disservice to
folks like the late President
Ronald Reagan who suffered
from Alzheimer's. Quite a
bit of the media coverage
about th e new pope,
Benedict XVI, has ~mpha
sized that he's against stem
ce ll research. In a recent
Washington Post aniclc. Ivy
Reyes, who had stopped by a
Manhattan church to say a
prayer for pontiff, empha. sized to a reponer: "''m hoping he can find a balance
with the science."
If you follow the media's
lead, we are to believe that
the pope, like President
Bush, is against stem cell
research. But neither ofthem
is against stem c~ll research.
Actually, I don't know anyone who is against stem cell
research. And I would knoV.·,
because I agree with 'the
Vatican and the U.S. president on this topic.
My posse is against
embryol)ic-stem
l:ell
research, and against cloning
to create embryos for use in
stem cell researl:h (or any
research). But we're not
against stem cell research.
Embryonic stem cell
research is not the only hope
for mankind, as we are typically ted to believe. The
prospects of adult stem cell
and umbilical cord stem cell
research are repeatedly
ignored by media and
activists who could use both
to promote funding of and
research in stem cell projects
and totally avoid the ethical
·chaos that comes with woJk-

NCAA vote ·could open·up·
Marshall-WVU football renewal ·
CHARLESTON, W.Va (AP)- Effom to
renew the football series between Marshall
and West Virginia University could get a
boost this week.
The NCAA's Board of Directors on
Thursday is expected to discuss legislation
that would allow Division 1- A and 1-A A
sc hools to add a 12th footba ll game starting
with the 2006 season.
.Marshall and WVU. which play every 'year
in basketball. last met on the football field in
1997 . Few negotiations have been held until
recently. aft~r Central Florida informed
WVU that it wanted out ofthc team 's scheduled game next fall in Morgantown .
Even though WVU found a replacement in
Division 1-AA Wofford. ·S.C.. WVU
President David Hardesty has said his 'university would try to arrange a series ·with
Marshall.
'
"I think it's far more likely that we would
play them with the 12th game than not. It
would add more room on pur schedule."
Hardesty sa id thi s week du~ing a visi t to
Charleston.
·
Marshall 's move to Conference USA
makes the Thundering He;'d ; ;11ore attractive opponent. ''and we would he much better positioned with the 12th game. so we'll
take a look at it.'' Hardesty sard.
It's uncertain whether the NCAA Board of
Directors would affirm the recommendation
made ea'rlier this month by the NCAA
Division I Management CounciL The proposal was opposed only by the Atlantic
Coast Conference among 1-A conferences.
Currently, Division I football teams play

The league has some new
elements of that policy to tell
Congress about. Players now
will be subject to a maximum

The league and union also
had recently agreed to add
new substances to the list of

to test for designer steroids;
and to lower the testostewne

"For two decades, the NFL

Mars hall Athleti'c Director Bob· l\jarcum,
who didn't return telephone messages seeking comment, has echoed Hardesty's comments that the 12th game would make it easier to put together a ser ies.
New M<irshall coach Mark Snyder knows
all about rivalries - he was in the thick of it
for four years as an Ohio State assistant
coach when the Buckeyes played Michigan.
He was at Youngstown State when the

in the 1990s.

said. " It would create tons of enthusiasm.

Wednesday's hearing is a
