POINTPLEASANT. W.Va.
- It was a frustrating end to a
season that did not fall the
way . of the Point Pleasant
. Babe Ruth team.
The team finished up a win .less season with a 7-0 no hit ·
ter loss to .. the Babe Ruth
squad from the Huntington

area.
While Point only manage.d
two base runners in the game
with one being walked and
one being hit by a pitch. the
visitors posted six hits in the
win.
Dunkle led off the first
inning with a single, followed
by a single from Brooks and a
walk of Woods. allowing
.Dunkle to eventually score
giving them the early 1-0
lead .
The Huntington squad post-

ed two more runs in the thi rd
when Dunkle crossed the
plate for the second time in
the game and Richards
reached home .after being
walked .
They again scored .in the
fourth . adding three runs from
Barebo. Miller and Childers,
making the comeback an
uphill baul e for Point
Pleasant.
Point suffered through two
' traight innings of three and
out before the first batter of
the game. Jarud Meigc;
readied after being hi t by a
pitch. He made it no farther
than second before the final
·out of the innning was
reached.
While the team from
Huntingtoi1 added another run
in the fifth. Point fou ght
through two more innings of
three up and three down
before Heath Booton became

the second Point player to get
on base with a walk.
But that would be the high!ight of the day for Point
Pleasant as the rest of the
sixth and seventh innings
pased by with little offense. ·
giving the .visiting squad the
7-0 win.
Despite the lack of offe, nsive firepower, Point did
manage 'to showcase some
quality play from pitchers
Chri s Casey. who pitched four
innings and Ricky Wyant who
finished out the final three
mni,ngs.
Saturday 's game marks the
end of the Babe Ruth season
for the Point Pleasant squad,
however most of the players .
will remain in action through·
out the su mmer in vario'us
leagues around the area.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Hot
temperatures and dry weather
have been good to Ohio grapes,
giving winemakers reason to
celebrate.
·
"Right now, the indicators
are saying great vintage," said
Wes Gerlosky, winemaker at
Harpersfield Vineyard near
Geneva. "Our vines are booming here. They look better than

ST. ANDREWS. Scotland
(A P) - Jack Nicklaus finally
had a few minutes to himself
Tuesday, and the Briti sh
Open felt just like so many of
the other 163 major championships he has played over
the last 46 years :
No one leaned over the r.ail
and ·begged for an autograph .
Gone for a moment was the
rat-a-.tat of two dozen cameras going off for every step
he took at storied St.
Andrews. He walked bri skly
;ind without fanfare to the
practice range , then took his
place among some 20 players
to w;1rm up for a practice
round on the Old Course.
Nicklaus, finally, was in his
element.
· He wasn't a legend, just
another player.
The trouble for Nicklaus is
that this British Open has
become one big ceremony, a
send-off like no other for the
greatest major champion
ever. There will be so many
tears when he crosses the
Swilcan Bridge for the last
time that the burn might spill
over its banks .
Nicklaus even welled up '
twi ce durin g a new s conference Tuesday morning, first
as he saw so many familiar
faces settle into their seats,
ihen as he was presented with
an
award
from
the
Associ;ltion of Golf Writers
for his outstanding· service to
golf.

But the sentiments can
wail.
Nicklaus is here to cumpete. even if the only lrop~y
available to him is a tee time
on .the weekend.

Here is another deal"played 'onhne . What
do you tnm k of the North-South auct1on?
How would you plan the play n\ seven

Easl, 1! non-vulnerable. would probably
have made a lhree·heart weak Jump ·
overc~ll But note West's excellenl p1e·

defeated by three 1r1cks: Club ace. spade
to the kmg . d1amond ace. d1amond ruff,
spade to th e ace. d1amond fo( a hump
promot1on. But even 1i lou / hearts IS doubled, plus 800 is not QOOd here 'AIIth Sl)(
spades and seven dubs ma keable
In the given sequence. North d1d well ·to

South couldn'l do more. ~VIth both top

about his t1 umps.

After the heart lead. declarer ru!led two
