With them went One. hardly
to be seen in the mtsts that
swi rled abou t the dungeon.
With a key that onl y He kept,
He unlocked any who would
recetve Hts gtft of hope. This
Giver of Hope would kneel
down bestde each wounded
and weary prisoner, and offer
them the balm of forgiveness
and the el ixir of grace, lifting
them from the nasty pool of
the•r fallen nature, bringing
them out into the clean and
clear atrs of glorious fellowship with Himse lf.
And the story continues.
We are ourselves caught up
into that same saga The story
of Chri stmas is the account of
how the Great Gtver of Hope
descended tnto our fallen
world, and brought with
Himself power to overthrow
shackles of st n and selfi shness
in the live' of all who will

"For He has rescued us
from the domimon of dark-

ness and brought us into the
kingdom of the Son He loves,
in Whom we have redemption , ·the forgiveness of sins''
(Colossians I: 13- 14 ).
The world presses in upon
us and we come ever so close
to toppling off the bnnk of
discouragement into the .1byss
of despatr. Though we
become convtnced that there
is no hope and that all the
evils of the world and all the
pains we've endured wtll
never be cleansed or healed.
hope cannot be conquered for
those who have placed their
faith in Jesus Chnst. "The
people walking tn darkness
have seen a great light: on
those livmg in the land of the
shadow ot death a light has
dawned" (lsatah 9:2 ).
People who have lost all
hope are people who have
ali eady died Yet God specidlizes in bnngmg people "back
from the dead." And though
we may be shack led by the
deadly weight ot chains ol sin
and selfi shness. He holds the
key to ou r fre edom and

Bv RICHARD N. OSTLING
AP RELIGION WRI TER

Robert Alter. professor of
Hebtew .md co mparative hterdture at the Umversity of
Cali forma. Berkeley. has produced a - bold new Engltsh
translation of the Bible's
open ing section. "The Five
Books of Moses," pub lished
by W.W. Norton.
This one-man \-Pentateuch
cu lmi nates decades of scholar!y a~sessment. Alongside the
trunslatton, he provtdes mtroductory essays and elaburate
commentary 111 footnotes. The
boxed volume would make a
tine gift for booktsh Jews at
Hanukkah, or Chri stians at
Christmas if they' re interested
111 modem Jewish thought.
Though most search the
Btble for mspiration, Alter

approaches tt as literature. pure
and snnplc. And wh ile other
scho lars nitpick about historicdl fact s or theoretical sources
underl ying the final Hebrew
text. Alter has ljmued patience
lpr such exert10ns and largely
takes the Btble as 11 stands.
Novelist John Updtke
caflled in The New Yorker
about Alter' s word choices
and those weighty footnotes
that. thanks to Alter's ego,
provide ample intrigue. In any
case, these add-ons are eastly
tgnored if readers prefer to
read just the btblical text.
As a translator. Alter wants
to convey a sense of the for·
eignness of writmgs in another
language from a very distant
time, while seeking readable,
modem English. Obviously, a
delicate balancing act
He doesn't go all the way

toward the ngtdly literal
HebraiSms and hyphenated
phrases that punctuated the
1995 Schocken Books translation - with identical title- by
Everett .Fox
of Clark
University. 111 Wor<:ester, Mass.
(which won a blurb from Alter).
Here is Fox on the call of
Abraham (Genesi s 12: 1-2):
"YHWH said to Avram: Goyou-forth from your land,
from your kindred, from your
father's house, to the land
that I will let you see. I will
make a great nation of you
and will give-you·blessing
and wtll make your name
great. Be a blessing!"
Alter's alternative: "And the
LORD said to Abram, 'Go
forth from your land and your
birthplace and your father 's
house to the land I will show
you. And I wtll make you a

great nation and I will bless you
and make you r name great, and
you shall be a blessing ... ,
However. Alter doesn't avoid
repetitions and has a Fox-like
fascmation wt th Hebrew wordplay: "The LORD God fashioned the human, humus fiom
the soil " (Genesis 2:7).
'·Therefore it is called Babel,
for there the LORD made the
language of all the earth babble" (Genests 11 ·9).
Looking at the opposite end
of the translation spectrum,
Alter 's introduction disdains
20th-century Bibles that crowd
the market, contending that
they push clarity while sacrificing literature and fidelity to
the underlying Hebrew.
Especially in prose narratives, modern translations
"have placed readers at a
grotesque distance from the

dtstincuve literary cxp~ncncc
of the Bible m Us original
language," he contends. For
Alter. that makes the old
King James YeiSton supenor.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Mike Fratello was hired as
coach of the Memphi s
Grizzlies on Thursday. leaving the TV booth and replacing friend and mentor Hubie
Brown, who retired last week
for health reasons.
Fratello, sometimes known
as "Little Hubie" when he
worked as an assistant for
Brown, coached the Atlanta
Hawks for eight seasons and
the Cleveland Cavaliers for
six before going into sports
broadcasting. He is the
Grizzlies' seventh head
coach.
"Today is the beginning of
a new day for all of us,''
Grizzlies president Jerry
West said. ··we want to get
back to where we feel good
about ourselves."
Fratello said Brown wished
him well .qnd offered to give
advice when asked .
"I am inheriting a team that
knows organization, that
knows discipline ami plays
un se lfishly." Fratello said.
"That is a great head stan.''
Memphis owner Michael
Heislcy likened Fratello 's
hard-nosed, demanding style
to that of Brown 's.
''Both of them really know
the game.'' he said. "They're
very strong disciplinarians,
and I think our players will
respond b~cause they'll see a
lot of Hubie in Mike."
Brown also left u broadcasting job to coach · the
Grizzlies in November 2002 .
He led the team to 50 victories last season and the fran chise's first playoff appearance. But the Grizzlies started this season 5- 11 and have
lost five in a row, including
four since Brown 's departure .

During a usual season, the league's

McKinley takes on topranked Cincinnati Colerain on

"The conte>l ha' been

ticket> have been sold and
allocatccl and changing venues
at this point in time will not

Colerain has been aware of
the possibility of playin& in
decidedly unfriendly contmcs
and it)oked at it as just another
obstacle to a championship.
"The location certainly
could be a factor, but what can
you do?" athletic 'director Dan

crutch."
Nothing else has shaken
Colerain this year. Only one
team has scored more than two
touchdowns against
the

Lakota West lost that game by

they have walloped Cincinnati

The Division V opponents,
