Testing sites planned for Meigs, Mason
Staff Report

OHIO VALLEY — Gallia County has now
reported 100 total COVID-19 cases since March,
while upcoming pop-up testing sites are being
planned for Meigs and Mason counties.
On Thursday, the Gallia County Health Department reported six additional, currently active
cases of the virus, bringing the county’s total case
count since March to 100 (97 confirmed, three
probable). One of the six cases is connected to
current cases, which includes active outbreaks,
according to the health department.
A COVID-19 pop-up testing site will be available
at the Meigs County Fairgrounds on Aug. 29, 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. This testing is being offered at no
cost and is open to the public, with no residency
requirement. No appointments are needed for the
event; however the Meigs County Health Department is asking participants to complete necessary
forms prior to arrival. The forms will be available
at www.meigs-health.com/covid-19. Individuals
wanting tested will not need a referral from a
healthcare provider. Test quantities may be limited,
so this will be held on a first come first serve basis.
The pop-up testing will be a drive-through
site, which means individuals will remain in their
vehicle throughout the process. If an individual
arrives via bike, walking or other mode of transportation, they will not be denied testing. All
individuals entering the fairgrounds for testing
will need a face covering. For updates and further
information visit www.meigs-health.com/covid-19
or follow @MeigsHealthDept on Twitter.
There will be free COVID-19 testing on Friday,
Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29 at Point Pleasant
Jr./Sr. High School. The testing will be 9 a.m. - 4
p.m. both days.
Testing will be done on a first-come, first-served
basis. Proof of insurance is not required. The
testing is available to all individuals in Mason
County. Attendees are asked to bring identification, such as a driver’s license or proof of address
to aid in returning test results.
A drive-through testing site was hosted by the
Gallia Health Department last week.

TODAY IN HISTORY
By The Associated Press

Today is Friday, Aug. 21, the
234th day of 2020. There are
132 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On August 21, 1831, Nat
Turner launched a violent slave
rebellion in Virginia resulting in
the deaths of at least 55 whites.
(Turner was later executed.)
On this date:
In 1609, Galileo Galilei demonstrated his new telescope
to a group of officials atop the
Campanile (kahm-pah-NEE’lay) in Venice.
In 1911, Leonardo da Vinci’s
“Mona Lisa” was stolen from
the Louvre Museum in Paris.
(The painting was recovered
two years later in Italy.)
In 1945, President Harry S.
Truman ended the Lend-Lease
program that had shipped some
$50 billion in aid supplies to
America’s allies during World
War II.
In 1961, country singer
Patsy Cline recorded the
Willie Nelson song “Crazy” in
Nashville for Decca Records.
(The recording was released in
October 1961.)
In 1963, martial law was
declared in South Vietnam as
police and army troops began a
violent crackdown on Buddhist
anti-government protesters.
In 1983, Philippine opposi-

tion leader Benigno S. Aquino
(beh-NEEG’-noh ah-KEEN’oh) Jr., ending a self-imposed
exile in the United States,
was shot dead moments after
stepping off a plane at Manila
International Airport.
In 1987, Sgt. Clayton
Lonetree, the first Marine
court-martialed for spying,
was convicted in Quantico,
Va., of passing secrets to the
KGB. (Lonetree ended up serving eight years in a military
prison.)
In 1991, the hard-line coup
against Soviet President
Mikhail S. Gorbachev collapsed
in the face of a popular uprising led by Russian Federation
President Boris N. Yeltsin.
In 1992, an 11-day siege
began at the cabin of white separatist Randy Weaver in Ruby
Ridge, Idaho, as government
agents tried to arrest Weaver
for failing to appear in court
on charges of selling two illegal
sawed-off shotguns; on the first
day of the siege, Weaver’s teenage son, Samuel, and Deputy
U.S. Marshal William Degan
were killed.
In 1993, in a serious setback
for NASA, engineers lost contact with the Mars Observer
spacecraft as it was about to
reach the red planet on a $980
million mission.
In 2000, rescue efforts to
reach the sunken Russian nuclear submarine Kursk ended with

divers announcing none of the
118 sailors had survived.
In 2014, Gov. Jay Nixon
ordered the Missouri National
Guard to begin withdrawing
from Ferguson, where nightly
scenes of unrest had erupted
since a white police officer
fatally shot a Black 18-year-old
nearly two weeks earlier.
Ten years ago:
Iranian and Russian engineers began loading fuel into
Iran’s first nuclear power plant,
which Moscow promised to
safeguard to prevent material at
the site from being used in any
potential weapons production.
A Vincent van Gogh painting,
“Poppy Flowers,” was stolen
in broad daylight from Cairo’s
Mahmoud Khalil Museum.
(Although Egyptian authorities
initially said they’d recovered
the painting the same day at
the Cairo airport, that report
turned out to be erroneous;
the painting remains missing.)
Emmy-winning CBS News correspondent Harold Dow died at
age 62.
Five years ago:
A trio of Americans, U.S.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Spencer
Stone, National Guardsman
Alek Skarlatos and college
student Anthony Sadler, and
a British businessman, Chris
Norman, tackled and disarmed a Moroccan gunman

on a high-speed train between
Amsterdam and Paris. First Lt.
Shaye Haver of Copperas Cove,
Texas, and Capt. Kristen Griest
of Orange, Connecticut, became
the first female soldiers to
complete the Army’s rigorous
Ranger School at Fort Benning,
Georgia. Mike Fiers pitched the
second no-hitter in the major
leagues in nine days, leading
the Houston Astros to a 3-0
victory over the Los Angeles
Dodgers.
One year ago:
Escalating an international
spat, President Donald Trump
said he had scrapped his trip
to Denmark because the country’s prime minister had made
a “nasty” statement when she
rejected his idea of buying
Greenland as absurd. Trump
signed an order erasing the
hundreds of millions of dollars
in federal student loan debt
owed by tens of thousands of
disabled military veterans.

A HUNGER FOR MORE

Will the soil of your life grow eternal fruit?
I believe that it could be
rightly said that God is always
sowing in your life. As you are
reading this and your mind
is drawn to the love of God,
seeds of mercy and grace from
His Word, the Bible, are being
planted into your heart. God is
holy and God is just, but hearing (or reading, as it were) of
the love of God as expressed
through His Son, Jesus Christ,
is God’s intervention in you to
receive forgiveness and life.
Since the seed of God’s Word
has been cast into your experience, the trick then is whether
or not your life is a fertile soil
in which that seed can take
root, germinate and ultimately
bear eternal fruit.
Jesus describes this spiritual
reality in Matthew 13 in what
we usually call the “Parable of
the Sower”. He says in verses
1-9 that seed was sown into a
variety of soils, but only one
type bore fruit. By “fruit”, He
specifically means the fruit
that goes into eternal life (life
beyond the end of your physical
body).

it, and then shares it with others. As gardens go, flower gardens are lovely, but the people
of God are created to bear fruit
that goes beyond our physical
existence here, and extends in
flourishing ways into eternity.
The Bible tells us that Jesus
told this parable to “great
crowds” who had gathered
about Him to hear Him speak
of the Kingdom of God (see
Matthew 13:1-2). This is
because the people gathered
around him were a mixed
bunch of people who would
receive the words that Jesus
was speaking in a number of
ways.
Some heard and dismissed
it because they preferred other
paths to the one Jesus presented them. Some heard and
were glad, but His words did
not take root in the soil of their
hearts and so, after the smallest inconvenience, they left it
and went on to other things.
Some heard, but their hearts
were so riddled with worry that
they felt that they could never
quite fully trust Jesus’ offer

of salvation, and every opportunity for potential fruit was
choked out by distraction and
hesitation, so there was no real
effect of Jesus’ life and power
in them.
But then there were some.
Some who heard. Some who
believed. Some who received
and embraced His words.
These few, revealed only over
the course of time and through
many hardships and challenges,
were the few who bore fruit.
The effect of their lives impacted others in turn so that others
also eventually would hear,
believe, receive and embrace
those same words of Jesus and,
as a result, experience eternal
life.

Jesus loves me

Study to arrive at truth

The other day, my
grandkids and I were singing the song “Jesus Loves
Me.” I know that you know
it too because it’s probably
one of the first Christian
songs any child learns, and
is always a favorite of both
the young
and old. I
wondered
afterwards
how that
song came to
be written, so
I looked it up
online.
Ann
The song
Moody
“Jesus Loves
Pastor
Me” was not
originally a
song at all. It was written
as a poem, but not in a
book of poetry. It actually comes from a novel
written in the 1800’s
called Say and Seal by
the author Anna Bartlett
Warner (August 31, 1827
- January 22, 1915.) The
main character in this
book recites it to comfort
a dying child about how
much Jesus loves him.
Then in 1860, a man
named William B. Bradbury, who wrote many
hymns, just happened
to read Anna’s book. He
loved the poem so much
that he decided to set it to
music, and he added the
chorus.
Most people do not realize that there are actually
four verses to the song
because we usually just
sing the first one and the
chorus. The verses are:
1. Jesus loves me; this I
know! For the Bible tells
me so. Little ones to Him

belong; they are weak, but
He is strong.
2. Jesus loves me, loves
me still! Tho’ I’m very
weak and ill. That I might
from sin be free, bled and
died upon the tree.
3. Jesus loves me; He
who died. Heaven’s gate to
open wide. He will wash
away my sin; let His little
child come in.
4. Jesus loves me; He
will stay! Close beside me
all way. Thou hast bled
and died for me; I will
henceforth live for Thee.
Chorus: Yes, Jesus loves
me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The
Bible tells me so.
And yes, Jesus does love
you, and me, and everyone - no matter who they
are or where they live or
what they look like. He
loves each and every one
the same and wants them
to be His children. Have
someone sing “Jesus Loves
Me” with you and thank
Him for loving us all so
much!
Let’s pray together.
Jesus, thank You for giving
us this song that we know
and love to remind us of
just how much You really
do love us. We know that
You never leave us alone
and forgive us when we do
wrong, so we never have
to worry or be afraid. Help
us keep the words and this
song in our hearts, so we
never forget those things.
Amen.

As another school year rolls
around, the mind turns to the
topic of education. It is a good
thing to be learning and the absolute best thing we can study and
learn is the word of God. Other
topics may be useful for the
pursuit of temporal
matters, but only
God’s word has the
power to sanctify
and save (cf. 2 Timothy 3:15; Romans

Psalmist noted that the man of
God meditates upon the word
of God daily and constantly (cf.
Psalm 1:2), and the Berean Jews
were commended by God for
their readiness to hear the Word
and then study the Word (cf.
Acts 17:11).
And yet not all study is created
equal. The apostle Paul warned
Timothy about a certain kind of
teacher who would lead the gullible astray. He says concerning
these individuals, that they are,
“always learning and never able
to arrive at the knowledge of the
truth (2 Timothy 3:7; ESV).”
How tragic to spend all one’s
life learning and learning, but
never actually learn the lessons
of value. If it is the truth that
sanctifies (cf. John 17:17) and
sets men free (cf. John 8:32),
then it is imperative for us to
know the truth if we wish to have
the salvation Christ brings.
Some, naturally, never arrive

the surface. Rather than
important, though. God

the heart of the matter.
and if we desire to love

that I say hurtful things.

For figs are not gathered
from thornbushes, nor
are grapes picked from a
bramble bush. The good
person out of the good
treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil
person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out
of the abundance of the
heart his mouth speaks’”
(Luke 6:43-45 ESV).
Just as a good tree
produces good fruit, so
should a good heart produce godly and helpful
words. And just as a bad
tree produces nasty fruit,
so does a nasty heart
produce hurtful and bitter
words.
Does that mean I have
a nasty heart? Well, it’s

definitely not as good as
it should be. And that’s
why I must yield to God’s
work of sanctification. My
words should echo that
of the psalmist: “Search
me, O God, and know my
heart! Try me and know
my thoughts! And see if
there be any grievous way
in me, and lead me in the
way everlasting!” (Ps.
139:23-24 ESV).
I haven’t arrived. I don’t
have it all together. And I
need the sanctifying work
of Christ to change my
heart every single day.
To be more like His. To
be more holy, pure, undefiled, and unstained by
this world.
So, as Jesus says, out of

the abundance of my heart,
my mouth speaks. And so,
if my words are to be more
Christlike, it must start
with my heart. And the
same is true for you.
Hurtful words abound
these days. Especially on
Facebook and Twitter.
But as followers of Christ,
our words should build
others up, bless the Lord,
and bring glory to Him
each and every day.
But, as Jesus makes
clear, this change begins
in the heart.
Will you allow God
to change you from the
inside out? Will you confess your sinful heart to
Him?
It might be nasty

words or actions. Nasty
thoughts or deeds. But
we must surrender our
hearts to God.
Father, thank you for
your grace. Thank you
for redeeming us from
death to life. Teach us to
trust you with our lives.
Do work in our hearts.
Search us. Challenge us.
Reveal our sin to us. And
make us more like Christ.
In our words, thoughts,
and deeds.
May God do a work in
your heart and mine. It’s
time for heart work.

Burrow confident in adapting to Bengals offense
CINCINNATI (AP)
— Back in pads for the
first time since he won
a national championship
at LSU, Joe Burrow got a
baptism in NFL red-zone
defense.
The new Bengals
quarterback fumbled a
snap — a steady rain
contributed — and had
trouble completing passes
in tight quarters. Not that
it bothered him much, if
at all.
Asked if he’s nervous in
adapting to the NFL, Burrow responded:
“Absolutely not,” he
said.
The first overall pick
in the draft is trying to
get a grip on Cincinnati’s

a month away. It was a
learning experience, with
the defense getting the
better of it.
“It wasn’t what you’d
like to see on a red-zone
day, but it was the first
one,” Burrow said. “It
started raining a little bit.
Obviously I’d like to play
better than I did, and I
know as an offense we’d
like to play better than we
Aaron Doster | AP did.”

the offensive line in free
agency, giving Burrow
something to work with.
Like every other rookie,
he’s having to pick things
up with limited practice.
“I think he’s on the
trajectory that we hoped
he would be on through
three days of training
camp,” coach Zac Taylor
said. “There’s a great
urgency right now, on
both sides of the ball. You
really do feel that. It’s not
perfect. There’s mistakes
being made.”
The Bengals are
counting on Burrow’s
intangibles — leadership,
confidence, ability to
learn from mistakes — to
help him become a quick

study. Taylor says those
intangibles are invaluable
under the circumstances.
“He’s done the things
that we pictured him
doing when we took
him,” Taylor said. “Again,
we still have room for
improvement, that’s for
certain. But he’s doing a
good job of leading the
group right now.”
That’s been the most
notable thing for veterans
accustomed to having an
experienced quarterback
leading the huddle. The
moment isn’t too big for
Burrow.
“To be honest, sometimes I forget he’s a
rookie,” offensive guard
Xavier Su’a-Filo said.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Mack Wilson is carted off the field by support staff after injuring his knee in a 7-on-7 drill during training
camp Tuesday in Berea, Ohio. Coach Kevin Stefanski did not provide details on Wilson’s injury. He’s awaiting more information from the
medical staff before he knows how long Wilson will be out.

Wilson’s injury hurts Browns linebackers
CLEVELAND (AP) — The
Browns’ linebackers were already
feeling disrespected. Now they’re
looking diminished.
Starting weak-side linebacker
Mack Wilson could miss extended
time with a hyperextended left
knee, an injury he sustained one
day after he gave running back
Nick Chubb a concussion with a
high tackle in the first full-padded
practice of training camp.
Browns first-year coach Kevin
Stefanski provided few details on
Wilson’s status before Wednesday’s
practice. The team was still awaiting more information from its
medical staff.
While Stefanski would not
speculate on whether Wilson, who
started 14 games as a rookie last
season, needs surgery, it’s safe to
assume he will miss several weeks
and potentially the season opener
at Baltimore on Sept. 13.
Wilson posted a message to his
fans on Twitter, telling them he
will “be back and better with an
even bigger chip on my shoulder I
promise you.”
Wilson’s loss for any period
of time will put added stress on
Cleveland’s linebackers, a group
already lacking experience and
depth and a group already under
the microscope.
Tae Davis slid into Wilson’s spot
for most of Wednesday’s workout,
which was again dominated by
Cleveland’s defense, with Willie
Harvey getting a few reps. Rookie
Jacob Phillips, a third-round pick
from national champion LSU, is
also in the mix.
Stefanski said the injury to Wil-

son gives those linebackers listed
lower on the depth chart a chance
to show what they can do.
“I go right down the roster and
just kind of tell you the next man
up,” Stefanski said. “Like we talked
about this group before, I think
there is a lot of good youth out
there and I think there are some
really athletic players, and we are
excited about those guys.
“Do not feel good about the
injury to Mack and feel for him,
but at the same time, that is what
happens in this game, and it opens
up opportunities for others.”
The Browns signed B.J. Goodson
as a free agent this offseason to
help offset the losses of Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey. Goodson, who spent three seasons with
the New York Giants and one with
Green Bay, spoke to Wilson and
said he’s in good spirits.
“It’s definitely disheartening
to see a teammate, and for me,
a brother to go down like that,”
Goodson said. “But hopefully we
get him back soon.”
Even before Wilson got hurt,
there was concern the Browns’
linebackers would be a major weakness on a team looking to bounce
back from a 6-10 season. Wilson
said last week that he and his
teammates were motivated by the
slight and were out to prove people
wrong.
“I make sure that I remind those
guys what these people think of
us,” he said. “Everybody gonna
find out.”
Goodson seemed to take Wilson’s injury personally as well.
During the two-hour practice, No.

93 was flying all over the field and
leading the celebrations whenever
the defense made a stop.
The Browns linebackers may
be under fire, but the 27-year-old
Goodson said he’s ignoring any
external criticism.
“Me personally, I do not pay
attention to the rest of the world
so the noise, I do not really hear it
and I stay away from it,” he said.
It’s been a tough start to camp
injury-wise for the Browns, who
are down several starters after just
five practices.
Stefanski said Chubb has been
back in the team’s facility since his
diagnosis, but he’s not been cleared
to resume football activities. Center JC Tretter underwent knee
surgery last week and the team has
yet to provide a timetable for when
the NFLPA President may be back.
Star defensive end Myles Garrett
still hasn’t practiced because of a
hamstring issue despite Stefanski
saying he would be back soon.
Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi
sat out for the second straight day
with a groin injury.
Punter Jamie Gillan was also not
on the field Wednesday due to an
undisclosed illness. He was placed
on the COVID-19 list earlier in
camp following a positive test.
If there’s a bright side to the
injuries, it’s that they are allowing
the Browns to see what they’ve got
— or need.
“That is really when teams start
to build depth,” said right tackle
Jack Conklin. “When stuff like that
happens, you get younger guys
who are thrown in there, and they
have to step up and learn more.”

with a 3-over par effort of 38.

No fans
allowed at
WVU opener
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
(AP) — West Virginia’s season opener next month will
be held without fans due to
the coronavirus pandemic,
the university announced
Thursday.
The Mountaineers will face
Eastern Kentucky on Sept.
12.
“We are disappointed that
we will not be able to allow
fans to attend the Sept. 12
home game, but we are working diligently to open our
gates for Big 12 Conference
play,” athletic director Shane
Lyons said. “It is our goal to
have fans at Milan Puskar
Stadium this season, but
right now, that is not possible
for the EKU game.”
The school said in a statement that only essential game
operations personnel and
families of the players and
football staff will be allowed
to attend.
West Virginia’s Big 12 home
opener is Oct. 3 against Baylor.
“Our primary collective
University focus right now is
on the start of classes and the
safe return of our students to
our WVU Campuses,” Lyons
said. “I am hopeful that all of
us will be aggressive in taking appropriate precautions
to prevent the spread of this
virus so that all parties can be
comfortable allowing a percentage of fans to attend on
Oct. 3 and beyond.”
In-person classes at West
Virginia start on Aug. 26 for
freshmen, graduate and some
professional students, while
upperclassmen will start
classwork online. Masks must
be worn on campus.
The Big 12, Atlantic Coast
Conference and Southeastern
Conference are among six
Football Bowl Subdivision
leagues proceeding with
plans to play this fall.

Reds suspend Thom Brennaman
Broadcaster used
anti-gay slur heard
by listeners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)
— Reds broadcaster Thom
Brennaman has been suspended from working Cincinnati’s
games after using an anti-gay
slur on air Wednesday night,
prompting the team to apologize for the “horrific, homophobic remark.”
Brennaman used the slur
moments after the Fox Sports
Ohio feed returned from a
commercial break before the
top of the seventh inning in the
first game of a doubleheader
at Kansas City. Brennaman
did not seem to realize he was
already on air. He later apologized.
The Reds took the 56-yearold Brennaman off the broadcast in the fifth inning of the
second game.

Brennaman and the Reds
announcers were working from
Great American Ball Park in
Cincinnati, even though the doubleheader against the Royals was
in Kansas City. Remote broadcasts have become the norm in
the baseball this year because of
coronavirus protocols.
The son of Hall of Fame
broadcaster Marty Brennaman, Thom has called major
league games for 33 years and
has been with Fox Sports for
the past 27, covering primarily
baseball and football.
“I can’t begin to tell you how
deeply sorry I am,” Brennaman
said. “That is not who I am
and never has been. I like to
think maybe I could have some
people who can back that up. I
am very, very sorry and I beg
for your forgiveness.”
Broadcast partner Chris
Welsh told Brennaman “You’re

there.”
Alternate play-by-play man
Jim Day took over the broadcast.

The Lightning acquired
veterans Kevin Shattenkirk
and Pat Maroon during the
offseason after being swept
by the Blue Jackets 16
months ago.
Blake Coleman and Barclay
Goodrow were added at the
trade deadline in February and
have made a difference in the
playoffs while playing on a line
with Yanni Gourde.
Shattenkirk’s third-period
goal began Tampa Bay’s comeback Wednesday. Coleman also
scored in Game 5, while Goodrow was an integral part of a

one-goal victory in Game 4.
Cooper noted Coleman and
Goodrow have been everything
the Lightning hoped they’d be.
“This is the reason we got
them,” Cooper said.
“You go down our roster,
and it’s hard to squeeze guys
into the `top six,’ but we
didn’t feel like that was our
need. We need to be hard
to play against,” the coach
added. “And harder years ago

means compete, and speed,

guys.”
