Pursuit ends
in flipped SUV,

Staff Report

GALLIPOLIS — The Gallipolis Post of the Ohio
State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle
crash involving one injury that occurred due to a
pursuit on US 35, Tuesday.
Joseph Billingsley, 38, of Pomeroy, in a 2002
Chevrolet Tracker, was traveling westbound on
US 35 reportedly with a loud exhaust violation
observed by law enforcement. Troopers says the
vehicle continued westbound while making several
marked lane violations. A pursuit was initiated
when Billingsley reportedly failed to stop for lights
and a siren. The Tracker eventually lost control,
slid into the median, overturned and ejected the
driver. Billingsley, according to OSHP Commander Barry Call was traveling around 100 mph. He
suffered non-incapacitating injuries, said reports.
The pursuit started by milepost 17 and traveled
approximately two miles before ending near milepost 15.
The patrol was assisted by the Gallia Sheriff’s

Trump lashes out at Omarosa

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump escalated his messy clash
with former aide Omarosa Manigault

longtime colleague, who had been the
top African-American in his White
House, as “that dog!”
The pressure on Manigault Newman increased, as the Trump presidential campaign filed arbitration

campaign official said the action was

Trump tweeted a barrage of insults

audio recordings. Her book paints a
damning picture of Trump, including
her claim that he used racial slurs
on the set of his reality show “The

“When you give a crazed, crying
lowlife a break, and give her a job at
the White House, I guess it just didn’t
work out,” Trump said. “Good work

dog!” John Kelly is White House chief

Manigault Newman fired back in
an interview on MSNBC, saying: “If
he would say that publicly, what else
would he say about me privately?”
She added: “He has absolutely no
respect for women, for African-Americans.”

Protecting Luck becomes premium under Colts

Matt Kryger | The Indianapolis Star via AP

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck (12) participates in a practice at
the team’s training camp Sunday in Westfield, Ind.

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP)
— The Indianapolis Colts
invested heavily in Andrew
Luck’s protection plan during
the offseason.
Now it’s time to see the
payoff.
After general manager Chris
Ballard added two potential
starting offensive linemen in
free agency and used two more
in the draft, the Colts believe
they’ve finally solved their
most glaring need — keeping
Luck upright and healthy.
“When Chris and I sat down
in the beginning and said, how
are we building this team, we
are building it from the insideout. That all starts with the
offensive line,” coach Frank
Reich said. “You win and lose
games up front on both sides
of the ball.”
Indy learned its lesson the

hard way.
Luck endured more than 400
hits from 2012-16, the highest
total among NFL quarterbacks.
He’s been sacked 156 times in
71 career appearances, an average of 2.2 a game. When Luck
missed last season recovering
from shoulder surgery, the
Colts allowed a league-high 52
sacks.
All those shots eventually
took their toll.
Since Luck’s 57-game starting streak ended in Week 4
of the 2015 season, the top
overall pick in the 2012 draft
has appeared in only 19 of the
Colts’ last 45 games. Not surprisingly, they’ve missed the
playoffs each of the last three
years.
So with Luck finally back
from surgery on a partially
torn labrum in his throwing

shoulder, Ballard made a calculated gamble for another
revamped line.
“I think being part of — I
don’t want to say a rebuild
because it is not really a
rebuild of the offensive line —
but kind of a mentality shift of
an offensive line. I have been
part of that at a lot of stops
and that is something I pride
myself in,” new right guard
Matt Slauson said.
The Colts have tried everything to solve this tricky
puzzle.
Then, general manager Ryan
Grigson wrote a note to himself, “Protect 12,” to remind
him of the Colts’ greatest need.
He used two of the Colts’ top
three picks in the next draft on
interior linemen. Both are now

Indians OF Martin
recovering from
serious infection
CINCINNATI (AP) — Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is recovering from a bacterial infection that team president Chris Antonetti
described as “life-threatening.”
Martin is in stable condition at the Cleveland
Clinic. Antonetti provided an update on Martin’s
status when he addressed the team prior to Monday’s series opener against the Reds.
Doctors determined Martin had a bacterial
infection that entered his bloodstream and created
toxins that damaged his internal organs, compromising their function.
“It was very serious,” Antonetti said. “Thankfully he’s made a lot of progress in the last 24 to
36 hours and he has regained a lot of the organ
function. He’s in a good path right now and we’re
hopeful he’ll make a full recovery. But, he has a
long way to go.”
Martin played in Tuesday’s game against the
Twins, and then felt sick in the middle of the
night. When he continued to feel sick the following morning, Martin was transported to the Cleveland Clinic and his condition quickly worsened.
“It progressed rapidly,” Antonetti said. “It was
life-threatening.”
Martin, who was placed on the 10-day disabled
list on Thursday, is batting .333 with two homers
and four RBIs in six games since he was acquired
from Detroit at the trade deadline. He is hitting

Undrafted Adeniyi
draws comparison
to Harrison
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers
rookie Olasunkanmi Adeniyi is all too familiar
with the comparisons to James Harrison.
Both undrafted free agents from the Mid-American Conference feature a similar, small, stockytype build considered by some as undersized
for the position. But like Harrison, the 6-foot-1,
248-pound Adeniyi also wears No. 92 and has displayed an early nose for reaching the quarterback.
“It’s a legendary number, and he definitely wore
it with pride,” Adeniyi said. “But I’m a new rookie
and I don’t want to be compared to anybody else
right now.”
Harrison is the franchise’s career leader in
sacks, piling up 80 1/2 during his 14 seasons with
the Steelers. The five-time Pro Bowler helped lead
the Steelers to two Super Bowl championships
and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year
in 2008.
“Obviously, it’s a great feeling to be compared to
one of the greatest of all-time, but I don’t think I’ve
reached that level,” Adeniyi said. “I’m just trying
to make a name for myself right now.”
He’s off to a good start.
Adeniyi, a former Toledo standout, did his best
impersonation of Harrison three plays into the second half of the Steelers’ preseason opener against
Philadelphia. Adeniyi sacked Joe Callahan and
stripped him of the ball, forcing a fumble.
He did it all with a hard cast on his injured right
wrist, too.
“I wanted to bring down the quarterback, but
with the cast, trying to grab him is a lot harder,”
Adeniyi said. “It was pretty clutch, and I was definitely excited, though.”
Adeniyi’s high motor also caught the attention

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry (80) in action against the New York Giants during an NFL preseason game on Thursday
in East Rutherford, N.J.

Landry would love to have Dez Bryant join him
BEREA, Ohio (AP) —
Jarvis Landry is friends
with Dez Bryant. He’d
like to be teammates.
With the Browns in the
market for another playmaker because of Josh
Gordon’s absence and
uncertainty, Landry said
Monday that he hopes
Bryant, a three-time Pro
Bowler wide receiver
in Dallas, joins him in
Cleveland.
“If he wants to be here
then obviously we’re
open arms and we’d love
to have him,” Landry
said. “He’d be a great
addition to our team and
our offense — for sure.”
Bryant has expressed
mild interest in the
Browns, who have had
him on their radar for
weeks and are trying to
schedule a meeting with
the 29-year-old.
Last week, after
general manager John
Dorsey said Bryant had
not returned any of his
phone calls, the sometimes volatile wideout
posted on Twitter that he
intends to visit Cleveland
sometime this week.
“Starting my visits
next week,” Bryant
posted on his personal account while the
Browns were playing the
New York Giants. “I’m

coming to the Land to
see you Mr Dorsey.”
Landry, who came to
the Browns in an offseason trade with Miami,
said he has spoken with
Bryant. He thinks Cleveland would be a perfect
fit for him and that he
would thrive in coordinator Todd Haley’s offense.
“Attitude,” Landry
said when asked what
Bryant could bring to
the Browns. “Obviously,
effort. You look at the
plays he’s making down
the field, underneath.
He can really do it all —
given the opportunities. I
think coach Haley would
do a great job of getting
him the ball if he was
here, but if not, then we
got guys who can make
plays, too. “
Just not enough of
them.
The Browns don’t
know when — or if —
they’ll get Gordon back.
The former Pro Bowler,
who has played in just
10 games since 2013
because of numerous
drug violations, has
missed training camp
while taking care of
his health. The team
has offered no specifics
about Gordon’s absence,
but both Dorsey and
coach Hue Jackson have

expressed optimism he’ll
return at some point.
Cleveland’s receiving
corps lacks experience.
Rookie Antonio Callaway is currently listed
as a starter and Rashard
Higgins, who has just
33 catches in two years,
has made progress but
may not be ready for an
expanded role.
Bryant had 69 receptions for 838 yards and
six touchdowns last
season.
While there’s no denying Bryant’s skills, the
Browns have to factor
in whether they want
to add a player who has
clashed with coaches
and recently called out
former teammates on a
Twitter rant.
Does he fit?
On Sunday, Jackson
was asked if there was a
concern about adding a
player of Bryant’s ilk to
a group of developing
receivers.
“It is a discussion,” he
said. “I think we have a
lot of good things going,
but at the same time I
do not think you can
ever have too many good
football players as long
as they fit and as long
as it is the right fit for
the organization, for the
locker room and for all

involved. I think that is
John’s charge. That is
what he is trying to do.
I think we will continue
to do that in a number of
different positions.
“If we can get better,
we still need to continue
to get better, and I think
that is how he sees it.”
Bryant amassed 531
catches for 7,459 yards
and 73 touchdowns in
Dallas, but he became
disruptive when he
wasn’t the primary focus
of the passing attack.
Landry doesn’t think
Bryant would complain
about being a second
or third target, and he
pointed to Haley’s tenure
as Arizona’s offensive
coordinator as proof he
knows how to include
multiple receivers.
“In this offense, everybody is an option and it’s
just about who’s making
the plays,” he said. “Just
looking at Todd’s history,
especially what he did
in Arizona with (Steve)
Breaston, Larry (Fitzgerald) and Anquan (Boldin), those three guys. I
think it’s an opportunity
for us all to get better.
If we add a guy to the
room, awesome. If not,
then we got to keep moving, so we’ll see how it
goes.”

NASCAR’s dark cloud lifted
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
(AP) — Keelan Harvick had the father-son
weekend of a lifetime:
He crashed a golf cart,
drove a tiny race car, ran
on a NASCAR track to
collect his dad’s checkered flag and got to ride
shotgun alongside his
old man to victory lane.
The 6-year-old son of
Kevin Harvick was the
headliner of NASCAR’s
weekend for stealing the
spotlight in Sunday’s
race-winning celebration
at Michigan . The racing
technically should have
been the focus, but as
this season plods along,
NASCAR will take every
light and fluffy moment
it can get.
After all, as Keelan
hammed it up with his
dad, no one seemed concerned about the arrest
of NASCAR Chairman
Brian France or the new
leadership for the top
motorsports series in
the country.
The direction of NASCAR, and how it plans
to address this neverending storm of negative
news, is the No. 1 issue
facing the series right
now.
It’s also the issue no
one from NASCAR plans
to address.
Perhaps NASCAR is
onto something with
this approach.
Since France took a

leave of absence last
week following his
arrest in New York on
charges of driving while
intoxicated and criminal
possession of oxycodone , NASCAR has
closed ranks. Jim France
replaced his nephew as
chairman and CEO but
so far has said nothing
publicly about his family’s business. NASCAR
also has not addressed
tumbling television
ratings, drooping attendance or sponsorship
struggles.
All that silence could
make it easy to question
NASCAR’s grip on reality. Shouldn’t someone at
least try to soothe stakeholders and assure them
there is a plan in place?
Any communications
expert would advise that
strategy.
Only that wouldn’t
fit Jim France, who has
always been involved in
NASCAR’s many entities
but did his work in the
shadows. Now pushed
into a public role, Jim
France hasn’t signaled
his style will soon
change.
He has, however,
steadied the ship
through his mere presence at Michigan.
Brian France was
aloof and often unreachable or unapproachable
. He was rarely seen
at the racetrack, and

competitors had limited
interaction with the
leader. Jim France, on
the other hand, was
front and center outside
the NASCAR office in
the Michigan garage. He
attended pre-race meetings and participated in
a driver council meeting
that addressed rules,
regulations, ideas and
initiatives.
As Brian France’s
engagement decreased
over the last two seasons , the ability to
accomplish meaningful
agenda ideas became
harder and harder
throughout the industry.
It became such a maddening loop that Harvick
skipped the Friday night
driver council meeting
to spend more time with
his son.
“The whole summer
has just been, it’s been
stressful,” Harvick said
after winning his seriesbest seventh win of the
season. “There’s just
so many politics and so
many things happening
in the sport right now. I
felt like this was the first
week back of being 100
percent focused on the
racing and my team and
being selfish on focusing
on those things and not
worrying about all the
other stuff that’s going
on with the sport.”
It remains to be seen
just what influence Jim

France will have, or
even how large of a role
he’d like to take. All the
discussion so far has
been limited to a handful of drivers who were
forced to address Brian
France’s arrest and Jim
France’s takeover simply
because they had scheduled media engagements
before the dominoes fell.
They said little about
Brian France and voiced
support for Jim France.
As independent
contractors in a sport
controlled by the France
family, drivers can’t be
expected to voice many
opposing positions.
But in this case, what
else would they say?
The last guy in charge
hardly came around so
Jim France simply showing up had an immediate stabilizing effect
throughout the industry.
Will Jim France fix all
of NASCAR’s problems?
Absolutely not. But in
making a change at the
top, NASCAR created
new energy when the
series seemed very stale.
The Harvicks’ fatherson celebration could be
appreciated, and no one
spoiled it with post-race
inspection issues, rules
complaints or ratings
concerns.
It may not be business
as usual with NASCAR,
and that could be the
best news in a long time.

US Olympian gives swim tips to Tokyo students
TOKYO (AP) — The Japanese
students let out squeals Tuesday
as Olympic gold medalist Katie
Ledecky moved across the swimming pool, ducking under the
lane lines.
The 21-year-old American,
fresh off a five-medal performance at the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, answered
questions about her career and
training routine before jumping
into the pool with more than 100
star-struck Japanese elementary
and junior high school students

to give them tips.
“Her strokes were really big
and really different from ours, so
I could really tell the difference,”
said 6th-grader Risako Tomita,
who lived in Maryland, Ledecky’s
home state, for four years.
“I tend to put my hand too
far down in the water,” she said
after watching how Ledecky
swims. “So I have to lift it up a
little.”
Ledecky, who has won five
Olympic gold medals, seemed
impressed as she watched the

students swim past, mouthing
to her parents and brother in the
stands, “They’re so fast!”
She told reporters afterward
that she plans to train hard for
the next two years so that she
can return to Tokyo for the 2020
Olympics. She cracked a smile
when she saw the students, still
in their dripping swimsuits,
craning their necks behind the
journalists.
“Hopefully I’ll see a lot of their
faces again in two years,” she
said.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Two places have
triggered tears of joy in my life: The Vatican and
Cooperstown.
I wasn’t surprised when it happened in my
mother’s homeland while kneeling and praying in
St. Peters as the nephew of a Roman Catholic priest
and the great nephew of a Dominican nun.
Even though I’m an emotional Italian-American, I
did not expect to have my emotions tugged as they
were last month in upstate New York.
With my wife, our son, daughter and her friend,
we broke up a nine-hour drive from Ann Arbor,
Michigan, to Cooperstown into a two-day trip.
We stopped for chicken wings at Duff’s in Buffalo,
spent a night in the Finger Lakes region and visited
Seneca Falls where the women’s rights convention
was held in 1848.
We were going to Cooperstown, naturally, for
baseball.
I found out over the course of a week there’s
much more to the one-stoplight village than its No.
1 attraction, the National Baseball Hall of Fame,
which is truly a great shrine for the game.
My son plays for a 12 years old-and-under travel
baseball team, Michigan Blue Jays Treat, that
wrapped up its season at Cooperstown Dreams
Park. The sprawling and spectacular 165-acre
facility is surrounded by lush forests providing a
picturesque backdrop on any one of 20-plus fields
enclosed by green, eight-foot walls.
Cooperstown Dream Park host 13 weeklong tournaments each summer and draws the country’s best
travel baseball teams from as far away as Hawaii.
It brings in more than 500,000 visitors to a village
with fewer than 2,000 year-round residents.
The tournament has created a unique culture
in which it is common for an infielder to extend a
hand for a competitor to slap when rounding the
bases after clearing the fences in a ballpark where a
200-foot fly is a home run.
When I saw that the first time, it touched me and
that’s tough to do at a sporting event for a sports
writer who has been to thousands of games.
The tears flowed, though, on another day when
walking to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on
Main Street, which looks like a Norman Rockwell
painting.
It took some time for me to pull it together
before joining our team’s players, coaches, parents
and siblings for a wonderfully informative 30-minute talk with Baseball Hall of Fame director of communications Craig Muder.
Even if you don’t have a player to root for at Cooperstown Dreams Park, check out a game if you can
make it there before the end of the month or any
other summer.
It’ll give you a good excuse to check out a place
unlike any other. Locals say they love the fall when
the leaves are changing colors on countless trees
and crowds are smaller, so that may be a great time
to getaway to this gem.

AP SPORTS BRIEFS

Anthony signs 1-year, $2.4
million deal with Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Carmelo Anthony signed a
one-year, $2.4 million deal with the Houston Rockets
on Monday.
Anthony was traded from the Oklahoma City
Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks last month before the
Hawks released him.
Houston general manager Daryl Morey announced
the signing and the Rockets posted a picture on social
media of Anthony signing his contract.
The 34-year-old joins a team led by MVP James
Harden and star point guard Chris Paul. The Rockets
hope the addition of Anthony will help them contend
for their first title since 1995. They lost to the Golden
State Warriors in the Western Conference finals last
season.
Anthony will get a fresh start in Houston after
spending last season with the Thunder, with whom
he averaged a career-low 16.2 points in 78 games. The

“When Rafa is missing, he’s missed, not so
much by the players as

love spending time with
Rafa and practicing with

Federer, seeded second, has won in Cincinnati a record seven times
but hasn’t played here
since winning in 2015.
In 2016, he had a knee
injury, and in 2017 he
had back problems.
“Cincinnati has always
been a good tournament
for me,” said Federer,
the reigning Australian
Open champion. “I was
sad not to play here last
year, and two years ago
there wasn’t a chance.
I’m glad to be back.”
Even with the topranked Nadal missing, Federer liked the
strength of this field,
especially with Murray
and Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic
having recovered from
injuries.
“That’s why you have
such a good, exciting
draw,” Federer said
before Murray’s match
was over. “It’s a pity Rafa
isn’t playing. He would
have added massively to
that part of the draw.”

Murray had his best

“The start of the
