Ohio River on the rise
Projected to crest above flood stage in Reedsville, Racine
By Sarah Hawley
shawley@aimmediamidwest.com

Sarah Hawley | Sentinel

By noon on Monday the river had already begun to spill into the boat ramp on
the Pomeroy Parking Lot, completely covering the amphitheater.

OHIO VALLEY — Excessive rainfall over the weekend
caused flooding in portions of
the area and even a school closure on Monday, as residents
now shift their focus to the
Ohio River.
The rains brought flooding
in areas around State Route
124 near Rutland and Langsville and State Route 143 just

outside of Pomeroy which
lasted into Monday, cancelling
school for Meigs Local Students on Monday.
As the streams and creeks
return to their banks, it is now
the Ohio River on the rise.
With crests projected on
Wednesday in the region, gauges at the Belleville Locks and
Dams and Racine Locks and
Dams are expected to exceed
flood stage on Tuesday.
As of 3 p.m. on Monday,

a crest at Belleville is projected at a level of 37.4 feet on
Wednesday morning. Flood
stage in that area is 35 feet.
According to the National
Weather Service, a water level
at 34 feet is when water begins
to cover State Route 124 at the
mouth of Laucks Run, north
of Portland. At 35 feet, State
Route 124 is flooded north of
Stiversville Road, at Rock Run,

other pieces of physical evidence, stated Wood.
Sheriff Wood stated that the suspect has been
identified as George C. Cooper Jr, 50, of Logan,
Ohio, and the victim has been identified as Mary
J. Cooper, 37, of Logan, Ohio. Mary J. Cooper was
the wife of George C. Cooper Jr.
According to a news release from the Logan

information to the Logan Police Department that
they received from the Meigs County Sheriff’s
Office regarding a possible shooting that occurred
in the city of Logan, earlier that morning.
Several patrol units from the Logan Police

Thornton explained he has been
meeting with the Mason County

discussing early development
plans.
Thornton said, if all goes as
planned, the project will break
ground next Spring and it will
take 18 months for completion
of the first phase of the project.
Phase one of the project will
consist of the installation of the
main water park and splash pad,
explained Thornton, which is an 8
million dollar development. After
completion of this phase, 200
campsites as well as 60-80 cabins
will be available for use. Then,
after the completion of phase two
and three of the project, there will
be a total of 500 RV campsites as
well 100-120 cabins with rustic
camping available, said Thornton.
Along with the development
of Jellystone Park, Thornton
explained he also plans to bring
in a Tanger Outlet Mall, a Sheetz
gas station/truck stop, a hotel
with an indoor water park, and
an amphitheater. He added he
and Susan have plans to restore
the mansion and then use it as a
county amenity as well.
He explained 400 plus available
jobs will be coming to Mason
County after the completion of
this total development project.
Thornton commented no employ

Thornton explained the largest
pool of guests to Jellystone Park

opportunities to help Point Pleas

He said, “We’re very excited
to be a part of the Point Pleasant
community and we would like to
thank Rick Handley for bringing
this project to Point Pleasant...
of all the businesses I own, this is
the most exciting to bring great
jobs to a great community as well
as fun.”
Thornton also extended a thank
you to Harrison Rowe for being
such a “great” ambassador of the
project and if not for him, the
project would not be where it is
today.
The next manner of business,
Thornton commented, is the final

establishments are for destina
tion campers. Thornton added
the average stay for a family is
two-and-a-half days and explained
many of these guests will venture
outside of the establishment
bringing business into the com
munity. He said the average
camper at their campsite spends
$63 a day and has the potential to
bring in over $31,000 additional
revenue to the community after
three years.
Thornton commented when he
has been in discussion with the
Mason County Commission he
encouraged the county to have
an occupancy tax on the cabins
which has the potential to bring
in an additional 1.5 million dollars
and can go towards other county

making it a 6-0 contest.
The Colonels committed their first miscue on
their very next offensive
snap as Brandon Drayton
picked off an Austin Scott
pass, giving the hosts
possession at the EKU
38.
The Herd needed six
plays to cover that distance, with Green finding
Tyre Brady on a six-yard
catch-and-run that saw
Brady stretch the ball just
inside the pylon for the
score. Justin Rohrwasser
tacked on the extra-point
boot, allowing Marshall
to extend its lead out to
13-0 with 1:14 remaining
in the opening canto.
The hosts forced consecutive punts on Eastern
Kentucky’s next two possessions, but the second
punt bounced off of a MU
blocker’s helmet during
the downfield process.
The guests fell on the
live ball, taking over on
downs at the Marshall
19 with 12:21 left until
halftime.
L.J. Scott capped a
three-play, 19-yard drive
by plunging in on a seven-yard run at the 10:41
mark for a 13-6 deficit.
Both teams traded
punts, then the Colonels
came away with an interception on a ball that hit
Brady before bouncing
into the hands of Leodis
Moore. EKU, however,
turned right around and
gave the ball back as
Scott was picked off by
Frankie Hernandez —
giving the hosts a firstand-goal at the five.

Tyler King went up the
middle untouched on the
very next snap, allowing
the Green and White to
extend their lead out to
20-6 with 4:38 remaining
in the half.
Marshall fumbled the
opening kickoff of the second half, and the Maroon
and White scooped up
the miscue while taking
over on downs at the MU
30.
Five plays later, Eastern Kentucky was once
again back to within a
possession as Alonzo
Booth capped things with
a seven-yard run at the
12:28 mark of the third
for a 20-13 contest. The
Colonels, however, were
never closer the rest of
the way.
MU answered with a
five-play, 55-yard drive
that ended with a 40-yard
pass from Green to
Obialo with 10:49 left
in the third for a 27-13
advantage.
Rohrwasser — who
was 3-for-4 on extra-point
kicks — nailed a 35-yard
field goal to give Marshall
its largest lead of the
night of 30-13 with 7:27
left in regulation.
The Colonels completed their scoring with
a 29-yard field goal from
Sam Hayworth at the
4:19 mark. Malik Thompson sacked Dakota Allen
in the end zone with 3:06
remaining for a safety,
which finished up the
16-point outcome.
