Paying tribute on 9/11
New cases,
recovered
reported
Staff Report

Beth Sergent | OVP

On this day in 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed following terrorist attacks which injured thousands more. In New York City, two airplanes were flown into the Twin
Towers at the World Trade Center, followed by a third airplane which was flown into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. A fourth airplane, with its intended target unknown
(though there have been claims it was bound for the U.S. Capitol), crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa. after passengers and crew on board attempted to overtake the
terrorists, no doubt sparing many lives. Today, across America, memorial services are planned to note this day in history and the losses to civilians, military members
and first responders. Pictured is a scene from The Healing Field at Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington, W.Va., going on now through Sept. 14. Presented by Greater
Huntington Park & Recreation District, it serves as a patriotic vigil to the thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy, recognizes the lives lost in the 1970 Marshall Plane
Crash, memorializes Veterans of the Armed Forces and lost loved ones.

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

Live like
you’re being
watched
In the Gospel of John we read this declaration:
“And this is the judgment: the light has come
into the world, and people loved the darkness
rather than the light because their works were
evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates
the light and does not come to the light, lest
his works should be exposed. But whoever does
what is true comes to the light,
so that it may be clearly seen that
his works have been carried out in
God. (John 3:19-21; ESV)”
Some things you don’t do when
you know people are watching.
Certain crimes are more likely to
be carried out under cover of darkJonathan ness. Illicit affairs are hidden away.
McAnulty Guilt and fear of being caught
Contributing motivates us to conceal such activiColumnist
ties. Likewise, some behaviors are
altered because of who is watching.
Children behave better when they
think their parents or teachers are looking their
way. Drivers slow down if they notice that there
is a police car up ahead. For one reason or another, when a preacher enters a conversation, there
is a tendency by some to try to clean up their language. Being aware of being watched becomes a
motivation to try and impress the one watching.
How would we behave if there was always
someone watching?
Imagine for a moment that your mother or
your father were able to always see what you
were doing. Would it alter your behavior at
work? At play? At home? Does your work ethic
on the job change when your boss is walking
behind you taking notes?
Sometimes knowing we are being watched provides an incentive to try to do better. Sometimes
it motivates us to hide the things we are doing.
How we respond to being watched has more than
a little to do with how guilty we feel about our
behavior.
David, in the Psalms, observes, “The Lord is in
his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven;
his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man
(Psalm 11:4; ESV).” Likewise, we read, “And
no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are
naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom
we must give account (Hebrews 4:13; ESV).”
Both passages teach the same principle. There
is always someone watching you. You can’t
escape His observational skills, and not only is
He watching you, but He is taking notes on your
behavior.
For David and the writer of Hebrews alike, this
was motivation to do good, resist temptation,
and try as hard as possible to be pleasing to God.
For those inclined to misbehave, God’s all-seeing
eye is an irritant and something to be ignored or
dismissed. Some men do not want others peering
over their shoulder, judging the merits of their
behavior. In the words of John, they hate the
light and prefer the comfort of darkness, so what
they are doing can’t be seen. How you feel about
the idea of God watching you speaks to both
your guilt over the things you are doing and your
desire to keep doing those things.
The inspired writers seem to be assuming
that the righteous man is going to want to cast
off the things he is ashamed of and try as hard
as possible to live right. The writer of Hebrews,
for instance, not content with just reminding us
that God is watching, conjures forth the image
of a great crowd of spectators made comprised
of all the righteous men and women of the Old
Testament, with Jesus most prominent in the
crowd, and says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let
us also lay aside every weight, and sin which
clings so closely, and let us run with endurance
the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus,
the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for
the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and is seated at
the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews
12:1-2; ESV)”
Moses, Abraham, Noah, Enoch, Able, Isaiah,
David, and all the rest of the great men and
women of faith… they chose to do their best,
living by faith, trusting in God, seeking after
righteousness and a heavenly home and now
they are looking to see if we are going to make
the same sort of choice. Jesus knew that God
was watching Him, and He always did His best
to do those things that would make God happy
(cf. John 8:29). Now Jesus is enthroned in
heaven and He is observing us, hoping we will
do our best to be pleasing to the Father.
God especially, as David says, is watching.
His eye sees what we do, and He is testing the
lives of men, observing whether their deeds
are good or bad. For those who understand
this, the lesson is simple: always behave as if
God was standing right next to you, taking
notes, because He is. Don’t do those things
that you feel a need to hide, because ultimately, you can’t. Bring your deeds to the light and
walk in the light, even as He is in the light,
because that is where you will find salvation
(cf. 1 John 1:7).

CROSS WORDS

The cost of forgiveness
The apostle Paul writes
to Philemon, “If he
[Onesimus] has wronged
you at all, or owes you
anything, charge that to
my account. I, Paul, write
this with my own hand:
I will repay it—to say
nothing of your owing
me even your own self.
Yes, brother, I want some
benefit from you in the
Lord. Refresh my heart in
Christ” (Philemon 18-20
ESV).
We’re not sure what
Onesimus owes Philemon.
Perhaps he stole money
from his master when he
fled. Regardless, Onesimus is in debt. And he
owes Philemon some kind
of payment.
Yet, the apostle Paul
realizes something. Onesimus is unable to pay Philemon back. His debt is
greater than his ability to
pay. Restitution is beyond
his ability to accomplish.
And that’s when Paul
steps in, promising to pay
whatever Onesimus owes
his master.
And that sounds a lot
like Jesus.
You know the beloved
hymn. Elvina M. Hall
writes, “Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe; Sin had

So, Paul is sending Oneon our behalf, and now,
He calls us to forgive oth- simus back to Philemon

(v. 12). He asks Philemon
to forgive Onesimus (v.
17). Paul promises to pay
Onesimus’s debt (v. 18).
And now, Paul is asking that after Philemon
and Onesimus settle
the matter, Onesimus is
able to return to him (v.
20). Why? Because Paul
finds Onesimus useful for
spreading the gospel, and
he wants Onesimus by his
side.
Again, that sounds a lot
like Jesus.
After all, He has paid
our debt. And now, He
requests our allegiance
to Him. He desires us to
spread the gospel as His
ambassadors.
You see, forgiveness
comes with a cost. Even
still, there’s never a time
when it costs us more
than it cost Christ to forgive us.
May we follow in the
footsteps of Paul. Or,
more accurately, let us
follow in the footsteps
of Christ. And let us
embrace the cost of forgiveness.

IN BRIEF

Twitter to label or remove
misleading claims on vote
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Twitter said Thursday
that starting next week it will label or remove misleading claims that try to undermine public confidence in
elections.
The policy will apply to tweets that attempt to
undermine people’s faith in the electoral process itself,
such as false claims about election rigging or ballot
tampering, or about the outcome of the vote, Twitter
said.
The policy goes into effect Sept. 17, a few weeks
before the Nov. 3 U.S. presidential election. Many
Americans are expected to vote by mail due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, which is likely to delay election
results. Social media companies have been working to
strengthen their policies to prevent misinformation,
but it’s not clear if their efforts will be enough.
Facebook said last week it will restrict new political
ads in the week before the election and remove posts

that convey misinformation about COVID-19 and voting. It will also attach links to official results to posts
by candidates and campaigns that prematurely declare
victory.

Taliban say peace talks with
Afghan team to start Saturday
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The long-awaited peace
talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government’s negotiating team are to begin on Saturday in
the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, the Taliban and Qatar’s
foreign ministry said Thursday.
The talks — known as intra-Afghan negotiations
— were laid out in a peace deal that Washington
brokered with the Taliban and signed in February,
also in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political
office. At the time, the deal was seen as Afghanistan’s best chance at ending more than four decades
of relentless war.

West Virginia set to debut against EKU
West Virginia coach Neal
Brown has a soft spot for teams
from his native Kentucky, keeping his comments positive for
an upcoming opponent that did
little right in its opening game.
Besides, Eastern Kentucky is
his mother’s alma mater.
The Mountaineers start the
coronavirus-delayed season
Saturday in its only nonconference game against the Colonels, who managed just 166
total yards in a 59-0 loss at
Marshall last week.
Brown attended high school
in Danville, Kentucky, about 35
miles (56 kilometers) from the
Eastern Kentucky campus in
Richmond, where he attended
several games growing up.
He knows several members
of first-year coach Walt Wells’

staff.
Wells was an assistant under
Roy Kidd, who won two Division I-AA national championships and was runner-up twice.
“A lot of respect for them,”
Brown said. “They had a tough
game last week. I expect them
to bounce back like most teams
do between week one and
week two. They’ll make adjustments and they’ll be much
improved this week.”
Eastern Kentucky of the
Championship Subdivision will
get national television exposure for the second straight
game. While thousands of fans
were allowed into the stadium
on a limited basis last week
at Marshall, West Virginia is
keeping its gates closed due to
the virus.

Morgantown is one of the
state’s coronavirus hotspots.
The university this week
brought an abrupt halt to inperson classes, moving nearly
all undergraduate courses
online temporarily after a
recent uptick in virus cases,
due in part to large student
gatherings.
“I want our fans to understand that we’re going to miss
them on Saturday,” Brown
said. “It will not be the same.
In a season of a lot of different things and things that are
abnormal, that is going to be
the most difficult challenge for
our players.”
Some other things to know
about the first-ever meeting
between Mountaineers and the
Colonels:

Run better
West Virginia had the Big
12’s worst offense a year ago
and was near the bottom
nationally in rushing, averaging
just 73 yards per game. Brown
didn’t mince words when asked
whether his running game is
improved.
“We better be,” he said.
Leddie Brown will get the
start, backed up by Alec Sinkfield. They combined for 690
yards in 2019.
Fortune back
West Virginia sophomore
cornerback Nicktroy Fortune
missed nearly two weeks of
practice time after the death
of his mother. Brown said the
coaching staff encouraged
Fortune to be with his family.

Fortune is listed as a starter on
the depth chart.
“He will play and I think he
will play well,” Brown said.
Social causes
West Virginia is wearing
“BLM” helmet stickers in support of the Black Lives Matters
movement. Football players last
week participated in a peaceful campus walk for inclusion,
equality and change after Jacob
Blake, a Black man, was paralyzed after being shot in the
back by a Kenosha, Wisconsin,
police officer.
West Virginia players also
participated in a march in June
after George Floyd, a handcuffed Black man, died after
