My granddau@hter applied for a posi·
lion at the Me!Jls County Library.. in
Pomeroy. It was m the newspaper about
needing an education coordinator, .so
she applied fur the position.
,
·
She did not know at the time lhat the
job had already been filled by someone
the dlrectot wanted. She applied thinking she had a chance, but of course,
around this area, it is who you know,
not bow qualified you are. Site was very
hun and found out later the spot was
filled by the person it was created for.
I think this was very unprofessional
of the library. Could this be something
_that goes on all lhe time, if so, some·
thing should be done about it. It is hard
enough to get a job in lhis area, anyw.y.
The board of the library should be mad~
to look into this, and find out who was
better qualified.

chauffeur and his gold key to the men's
room. The penalties Imposed upon Lite,
said Justice O'Connor, "seem to me
minor.'.' Viewed from O'Connor's
world, perhaps they are. In the world of
Langley prison, such punishment cannot be viewed as minor at all.
Given these circumstances, is the
treatment program "voluntary"? The
Fifth Amendment says that no person
may be "compelled" in a criminBl case
to be a witness against himself. Justice
Kennedy, speaking for the plurality
said flatly that the SATP "does not com~
pel prisoners to incriminate themselves."
Justice John Paul Stevens, speaking
for the dissenters, said the warden's
order "unquestionably violates Lite's
Fifth Amendment rights." The a'-gregate effect of the various penalties 'creates compulsion.'' The benefits of the
program could be preserved, In
S~e~~ns' vie~, by granting "use immu·
mty to parttcipants. Kennedy objected
that this would permit a sex offender to
escape punishment for the crimes he
confessed to In therapy.
Justice Stevens had the better side of
thl$ argume-nt The ·penalties automatl·
cally imposed upon the prisoner are not
trivtal. Once senr back to Level 1, Lile
"will no lohger be 11ble to earn his way
back up to Level m status through good
behavior during the remainder of his
sentence.'' He remains eligible for even·
tual PI!JUie1but his refusal to take part in
the pnson s program surely will count
against him.

DEAR ABBY: I have ~en

have recently become good ·
friends again with my exhusband. He has always been
attentive father to our llyear-old son.
. Last year, after a second
divorce, my ex hooked up
with a woman half his a$e.
She's a 21-year-old ex-stripper who hasn't worked a day
since she met him. I'm not
one to pass judgment, but this
gal is a clingy,1azy gold-di~

She's also moody, demanding, and a "party animal,''
according to our son and my

DEAR READER: OK,
your ex's girlfriend is flawed,
msecure and ever-present. If
you bring up her shortcomIngs again, he will only
· become defensive.
Encourage your son to
explain to his father how
important it is to him to
s~nd some time alone with
h1m. Most boys need one-onone with a role model - a
time for "man to man" conversation and bonding. The
presence of a third party,
regardless how ravishing she
llllly be, prevents this. And
while he's on the subject, he
should tell Dad the nicest gift
he could have for his birthday
would be the woman's
absence at his party. It may

OUTHSIDE- It's summertime -again, and for
Mason County 4-H students, that means one thing
-camp time!
·
.
The annual event ran for two weeks, serving both the
older and younger 4-Hers in the county. This year's
theme was "4-H Through ~e Seasons,'' celebrating
spring, summer, fall and willij!r d~~g the four days the
campers were at the Souths~ facthty . .
ln addition to the seasori&l celebrations, 4-H camp
includes a number of other1activities including, woodb\ll'{ling, quilting, line dancing, water . rock~ts, basket
weaving, plastic canvas crllfts,. leatherworkmg,_ nature
walks, cooking outd, oors, stjooung sports, chartmg and
more.
Each camper signed up for three classes each day.
Paul Nichols and Mason County extension agent
Rodney Wallbrown - both state-certified shooting
instructors - were in charge of the shooting. skills
class. Nichols and Wallbrown loaded the clay ptgeons
into the trap machine and taught the kids how to proper!~ handle a firearm.
·
• The importance of this is to teach respect for
firearms and gun safety," Wallbrowp explained. ''We're
not interested in shootmg things or killing things, we're
just teaching the kids respect for guns and gun safety
and how to properly handle guns and to see that guns
can be used as a sport for trap shooting, skeet shooting
or whatever.
"They don't have to be hunters, they can just go out
and enjoy shooting."
The National Wild Thrkey Federation and the 4-H
Leaders Association made donations to purchase· the
equipment ,qeeded for the shooting skills class.

your excu:Se for not attending college?

As you read this, you may be

you that there are no good excuses.
As a wise man once told me, your
future begins in college. Read on and
let's take a look at some of the most
popular excuses and why they cart be
overcome.
"No one in my family ha~ ever

a true statement, it doesn't mean that
you aren't destined to be the first.

college graduates had ihis same fear
on the day they started college, but
they made it through. Most c~pus

students.
These include computer labs, fully
equipped libraries and tutors for
most subjects, students will find the
academic support that they need to
be successful. Small colleges offer a
smaller student to professor ratio,
which aives the student much more
individualized attention, thus
increasing the success rate of the student. You will never know if you can

"I have been in school for 12 years

are many qptions available at college

today. There are a lot of hands-on
technical, certificates and associate
degrees where you may not have to
sit through an enormous amount of
traditional academic subjects such as
chemistl}', humanities and literature.
Certificates such as pharmacy
technician, medical transcriptionist
or welding can be obtained in one
year of full-time study. Associate
de-gree programs, normally completed in two years of full-time study, arc

as plant maintenance technology,
information technology -or office
