Courts are not the place to
begin dictating public pol~cy
• The Clnclnnull (Ohio) Post: The Ohio
·Supreme Court continued its 4-3 voyage on the scus
or judiciul uctivism June 12 with a ruhn~ that
nllows the 'city or Cincinnati to proceed wnh its
luwsuit nguinst the gun industry.
Even though we support stringent hundgun regu·
lution. we do not endorse the lnwmuking-by-litigu·
lion tm:ti~: embruced by City Council· und ubout 30
other municipulities m:rnss lhc .counlry. Muybe it's
well-intended. but lhe victim here i.~ likely lobe, nul
the bad guys. but the ~oncepl of personal responsi·
hility.
.
'
. . ..
The eily nllcge~oo" lhut gun manufacturers have
mude. murkeled und distributed fireurms in wu~s
thut muke weapons uvuiluhle to criminuls and chd·
dren. umong others. It suys thut by not equipping
guns with an unproven tcchnolog~ (trigger mei:hu·
nisms that will only fire when u~l!vulcd by the reg·
istercd owner); gun makers have fostered the crim·
inul misuse or firearms.
Tellingly, the rnujority opinion upprovingly quotes
u commentary which pruises such gun litigution, not
on its· legal merits, but -on its role in promoting the
: desired outcoi11e of forcing the dcsi~n of "safer"
: firearms and "'new murketing pruclices' thut muke it
: more difficult for criminuls to get firearms.
We would prefer the Ohio Su,Jreme Court to leuve
such uecisions to the Generu Assembly or locul
lcgislati ve bodic;;. Those ure forums be Iter suited
. for establishing. and vetting, public policy._

POINt PLEASANT - Do you
have enough auto insurance to cover
your car? Are you sure? /
If your car is totaled in an accident,
your insurance will cover the damage, rigbt?
Maybe, maybe not.
..
Especially if you lease your car, or
owe more than it is worth.
An accident totaled Paul Salva's

new Mazda 626, but his autg insur.

"They gave me the bluebook valu~

But Salva still had almost three
years left on his lease. When his car
was totaled. he had to pay early ter·

thari $4,000.

And that's just the beginning. It
gets worse.
