La5t month, thlii commissioners refused to tllke action oil

In a letter to Story on July I, Trussell refers to a response
from Story lo the June 5 letter, which was not included as an

·
According to Trussell's response to Story, lhe prosecutor
wrote, on June 19: '"I regret to udvise you that employment of

·
Many of the fund line items in Trussell 's $596,000 budget

In 200 I, the commissioners appropriated $610,000 into

COLUMBUS (APJ - Ohio enrolled
almost 100.000 more individuals thari
anticipated for Medicaid last month,
· raising new challenges for a state budget that twice plunged into the red by
billions of dollars in the last year.
The number of children and parents
who enrolled in Medicaid in June
jumped by 90,240, a 9 percent increase
above the anticipated number of about I
million individuals.
That translates . to a $15 million
expense the state wasn't expecting.
The number of senior citizens, blind
and disabled individuals who enrolled
in Medicaid jumped by 4.558, a smaller
increase of just over I percent but still
meaning an additional $6.3 million .
"We are concerned. that an extra
100,000 people is certainly going to
.challenge us to find savings in other
areas," said Barbara Edwards. deputy
director for the Office of Ohio Health
Plans in the . Ohio Departll)ent of Job

The total additional cost of just .over
. · $21 million seems small in comparison

According .to James Dillet Freeman,
long-time director of Silent Unity, it
helps people discover the truth about
themselves- that "at the core and center of their being is the infinite power
and intelli~ence of ·God, ready to flow
into their hves."
Once they realize this, the .circumitances in their lives. change, says
Freeman ..
A woman who phoned Silent Unity
when her husband had .a bean attack
was told, "All is well. God is there and
His healing ~wer is at work in your
husband. Mtghty currents of God's
healtng love are flowing through your
husband's hean and he is healed."
· She was told to copy down that "affirmation" and pray it herself. Meanwhile,
for the next 30 days, her prayer request
- like all others - was taken into the
Silent Unity prayer room by the worker
who received the call. Throughout the
day, workers take prayer breaks
throughout their busy rouune of opening and answering letters and receiving
phone calls.
Did. the woman's husband recover?
He did, but how did his. wife's prayers
reach him?
. "I've thought quite a bit about that
question of how prayer works," says
Freeman, "I don't really know. We're
dealing with a mystery. I think prayer

Will their prayers work better than
yours? They might. They have been in
the business of praying for others since
1891. · · ·
The founders of the Unity School of
Christianity were Charles Fillmore and
his wife, Myrtle. Charles was a successful real estate operator in Kansas City.
His wife's 1ife was threatened when she
was became afflicted with tuberculosis.
She auended a lecture on spiritual healing and this started her on the way to
her recovery.
It was not an instantaneous healing
(the complete cure took two years) but
it changed her life. She developed a fol lowing - a group of people m Kansas
City who mel each night at 10 p.m.
Sometimes they sang a hymn or two,
followed by a pray)!r, . remembering
those who were in special need and who
had asked the group to pray for them.
This type of prayer became known as
"absent treatment," which meant that
one's J'hysical presence was not
require for a healing to take place. It is
still the basis for healing in the Unit,Y
School of Christianity, a Missounbased. loosely knit denomination devoted mostly to healing.

• The Indianapolis Star. 011 the dec(th penalty: The
U.S. Supreme Court decision banning executions of the
mentally retarded reflects the nation's growing discom·
fort with capital punishment.
The court ruled cotrectly in Atkins vs. Virginia that
such executions violate the Eighth Amendment's ban on
cruel and unusual punishment. Death Row inmate Datyl
Atkins had an lQ of 59.
· While a majority of Americans continue to support the
death penalty. most also ww1t it reserved for only the
must despicable criminals. Neither the mentally retarded
nor children tit into that category because they can riot
fully appreciate the nature of their actions.
While the debate about the death penalty continues,
Americans hit'e an obligation to see that it's applied fairly, including mandatory DNA testing when available.

In exempting the mentally retarded, the court has
