"Best in the Category."
·
.That meant her project competed with those of 4-H membj:rs from ·across the state in the woodworking category and
hers came out on top,

h~r two months.
• .
This is not Whitney's first woodworking project. In fact she
has been working w1th wood for several years. With both the
bookcase she built last year and ·the planter bench the year
before, she took top awards in local and state fair competitions.
'Asked how she built such a beautiful chair and ottoman.
Whitney said she staned .out with several. 12-faot oak boards
and just followed a pattern. She did all the work herself with
the exception of planing the wood . "Dad insisted on doing
that," she said, as he readily admitted to being "maybe just a
bit overprotective" when it comes to her using some power .

Whitney used a glider kit for both the chair and ottoman and
the rest she explained was just a matter of "gluing and screwing" it all together.

Retirement Isn't what it

or course, people might
wonder just what these new
work possibilities might
mean fot their Social Security
checks. And I um always
happy to expluln that the
news Is good uti around .
After you reach the full
retirement uge (now ugc 65),
you cun collect all of your
Sodnl Security retirement
benetlts even If you decide to
keep wotkliigkno mutter how
much you 111a e,
Here's why.
lluch yeur you work adds
another year of earnings to
your Social Security work
record. Your retirement beneIll puyments are tlgured on
the highest 3~ yeurs uf your

working lifetime. Quite possibly, the money you are
tnuklng at 6(), 67 or older will
be more than · you made 30
years ago,
While you're · wotking aml
receiving . benefits, Social
Security will review your
earnings record each year to
sec whether you're due un
Increase In your monthly benetlt. If so. we'll send you a
notice telling how much your
benefits have increased.
And there's ulso another
way you cun work past your
full retirement age and
increuse your Social Security
benet1ts, Just postpone gettit1g uny Social Securii,Y
retirement benellts immediate! y. Bach year you work
Inc reuses your eventual bene111 umount by a certain percentage until you're age 70.
For example, if you were
born between 1943 and 1954,
your full retiretnent age will
be 66 . If you continued 'to

work up to age 70, you would
receive four years worth of
credits and your benefit
would be about 32 percent
larger., That's quite a difference.
Before you make any
retirement decision, we
encourage you to visit wwwssa.gov and check out the
Social Security Benefits
Planner. It wilt help you calculate your benefits using different retirement situations,
including one in which you
just don't retire at all.
