Severe cases can res\llt in coma, paralysis or death . ·U.S. trade deficit drops slightly as export growth · outpaces imports WASHINGTON (AP) - The U,_S. trade deficit dipped slightly to $37.2 billion in June as a big jump in sales of American exports of everything from com to computer chips helped offset record demand by American consumers for foreign-made products, the govemment reported Tuesday. . Even with the improvement, the Commerce Depanment said the June deficit was still the second largest in history, down just 1.8 percent from the all-time high of $37 .8 billion set tn May. Still, many analysts saw reason for optimism that the coun· try may be finally turning the comer on trade. They noted that June marked the fourth straight month that American exports have risen, helped by u 7 percent drop in the value of the dollar this year since February, making U.S. goods cheaper and thus more competitive in overseas markets. This would be particularly good news for America's manufa-cturing companies, the hardest-hit sector of th.e economy during lust year's recession . Au1ust 11. 1001 ' Page 81 Former Enron executive to plead guilty WASHINGTON (AP) - A top lieu· tenant to Enron Corp.'s .former chief financial officer will plead ~uilty to criminal charges, the first admtssion of guilt by an executive of the fallen energy -tradin~ company. sources close to the investigation satd Tuesday. Michael Kopper, former managing director of Enron Global Finance. plans to enter guilty pleas Wednesday in Houston to single charges of consptracy to coromit wire fraud and money la~n ­ dering, two sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He will also turn over $12 million iu illegally obtained assets. according to one of the sources. Kopper. 37. was a top deputy to exchief financial officer Andrew Fastow. He became a focus of investigators because of his involvement in Enronfinanced partnerships, accounting devices that allowed the company to shift debt and other liabilities off its books. As part of the plea agreement, Kopwr has agreed to cooperate with investiga- tors, a potential watershed event in the investigation since he has knowledge of Enron's innermost workings and financial dealings. Kopper's attorney' did not immediately return calls seeking comment. A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment. The plea is the first outward sign of progress in the Enron investigation. Other major companies underinvestigation, including WorldCom, Arthur Andersen and Adelphia, all have seen executives charged. . Ken Johnson, spokesman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said Kopper is just the first of many executives who will be charged. "'Clearly this is just the first shoe to drop, based on the mformation our com· mittee · has in its · possession," said Johnson, who works for committee chairman Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La.
